Homemade Gesso and Texture Paste

In this video I show you how you can make your own Gesso and Texture Paste and save art/crafting $$ for other supplies. I should mention I do not know the archival quality of these homemade products or if they are acid free.
Recipe for Gesso:
GESSO
¼ cup Plaster of Paris (or you can use baby powder) I prefer the texture I get from the Plaster of Paris.
¼ cup water
½ cup white acrylic paint (or whatever other color you’d like to use. Mix in black if you want some black gesso)
¼ cup white glue (I buy the cheap Dollar Store glue for this)
Pour all ingredients into an air tight container and mix WELL. You want to make sure all of your Plaster of Paris is mixed in very well. If you want a heavier Gesso then simply add more Plaster of Paris. If you want a light Gesso, add a bit more paint.
And the recipe for Texture Paste:
TEXTURE PASTE
½ cup Gesso
¼ cup ModPodge
1 cup Plaster of Paris (or again, you can use baby powder here instead if you prefer)
Pour all ingredients into an air tight container and mix WELL. You want to make sure all your Plaster of Paris is mixed in very well. If you’d like a thicker paste, just add more Plaster of Paris.
I’ve also used Wall Repair Compound or the pre-mixed Drywall Compound

I REALLY appreciate artists / crafters like you who share such valuable tips and ideas. Thank You! Taking your time to teach strangers.. is AMAZINGLY !! THANK YOU !! Time isn't free. It's the most valuable thing in life !! It proves to me how much compassion that's still left in this messed up world. The art community, regardless, of your " cup of tea " seems to be the most passionate, positive, happy, etc., people in the world! ( I could go on and on....I'm sure it's not just my opinion). Art is truly in everything. So really every single person is an artist in some way! Art is an universal language. THANK YOU ! (( I hope you can tell how THANKFUL I am.. 😜 )) LOL 💕Casey 💕

When I measure gooey things like paint, I get a syringe that's used for injecting meat with flavouring or marinade. Some can hold about a cup of 'goo' and that way the measurement is correct and the container, the syringe barrel is naturally squeegied clean with minimal rinsing required. They're available usually by the emergency cookware/foil roasting pans area of the grocery store. Thank you for this recipe, it's just what I needed :D

Love your detailed info and humor.Crafting is suppose to be fun, and a learning experience and often times experiment. You never know what you might come up with without even knowing it! Also wanted to add that most counties have a hazardous waste station for people to take their old paint, stains, varnish, polyurethane, primers, cleaning supplies, pool cleaners, car fluids,wall paper remover,paint thinners, grout, drywall repair paste, everything you need for dozens of DIY projects. And here's the best part... It'a all free! In my city /county you can get up to 10 items every 30 days.You do have to show your ID so don't forget that. And my hazardous waste station allows 10 items per car load. So if I go with my friend , that's 10 items for both of us. Not ten each! So go by yourself or take separate cars. Just an FYI! I haven't paid for paint, mineral spirits, car oil ,most of my cleaning supplies, or pool shock for 6 years. And you all know that you can take white paint to the place you bought it( sherwin williams,Lowes, walmart etc..) and they will mix and make your desired color for you. Usually for free. Find out if there's a hazardous waste station near you. It will save you hundreds of dollars in your crafting products . Have a blessed day!

When measuring out the plaster, you might put the measuring cup inside the bag and scoop the powder into it then just level it off with a knife. You'll need to open up the carton all the way. Or transfer the plaster to a bag.

It's funny how people basically make their own primer and turn around and call it Gesso. The gesso comes from working the old walls before the day of Sheetrock. They nailed strips of wood on the wall of studs. Then "float" some mortar then use the Gesso as the final coat. So with that said you could use the same thing found in joint compound. What I don't understand is you could save yourself all that time making it by just using a good primer. And by saying that I don't mean buying it at an arts supply store, but at a hardware store. The reason I don't recommend an art supply, is they charge too much.
@HWolfe

Ron Hutchins wow! thanks, I'll try this!
@Belleamia

I actually use joint compound in many of my canvas works. I use it for textured tree's, crosses, etc. I don't know if I'm allowed to put a link here or not, but I'll just give you the name of the shop and you can look it up on Etsy. You will find textured items there. I'm not trying to sell anything ... but if you have a question about how to use joint compound (I've used mosaic grout, too), let me know. The shop is called AlteredSensations. One more tip: you can buy caulking in the tube, but it takes longer to dry. Plus, there's so much of it you need a good stopper to keep it from dying out.
@BelindaShort
@BelindaShort 7 лет назад
While true- The amount of gesso you can make and customize by just using powder, any kind of acrylic paint and PVA is still cheaper than primer from a hardware store.
@BelindaShort
@BelindaShort 7 лет назад
The only issue with joint compound that I've found in my tests is that it needs to be mixed with more glue for it not to crack over time. It tends to be slightly too brittle.

How to make Elmer's glue at home" The same glue that is used in school. I found the recipe online. Pour 3/4 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup and 1 teaspoon white vinegar. Whisk the ingredients together until they're blended well. Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens.

But it can’t be the exact same, because PVA glue is acrylic, it is basically the same as the base they use for making acrylic paint... Gesso, of course, is a simple acrylic paint...

More like wallpaper paste perhaps? IDK if that's a good idea to use for art/craft unless it is a temporary thing because of the sugar in it may draw bugs/mites, silverfish, etc. Definitely not an archival thing. For a quick kid art thing, fine, but for something you want to keep for years it would be worth the cost of commercial glue.

When chalk paint became in vogue for painting old furniture I started seeing recipes for it and decided that I would try just the plaster of paris mixed into regular flat wall acrylic latex paint and it works fine to make that chalk flat, no primer needed paint. It certainly is cheaper! I was considering using that mixed in white latex paint the same way for gesso for canvas. So, I guess you have led me in that path! I'm just wondering why the glue? Doesn't that make it set up really hard and yet not sandable? For texture, yes, makes sense, but not for just gesso? I guess I'm still just wondering what all do you do with it? Will it make a toothy base for soft pastels on paper or wood or whatever you want to use for a base for your pastel painting?
@mytherapyroom
@mytherapyroom 4 года назад
wuznotbornyesterda a very good question! My understanding is the glue is added as a binder to ‘hold’ the gesso to the substrate your painting onto. The glue does not make it set up hard and still allows the gesso to have the tooth you need. 👍🏻

You'll also be able to pull the whole painting of at once if u do right.

And no joke, I think it's what makes it thick enough or hold together so that it doesn't seem into the canvass.

polyfilla ready mixed in the tubes for texture is great and very cheap, i can't tell the difference between that and the trendy expensive craft brands.

If your wondering if that old house paint you bought home will work check this out ... little helpful tip from google ...There actually is no difference between latex and acrylic paints because there is no latex in latex paints. Let me explain. All water based paints today are referred to as "latex", even though there is absolutely no latex rubber in the formula.Feb 15, 2011 latex paint are somewhat similar as they are produced from acrylic resin.
