I had just completed making my homemade hot tent #3 and it was ready to be taken on a hot tent trial run at Mew Lake in Algonquin Park. This new hot tent would be 10' x 14' and made for backcountry winter camping with friends and for more comfortable trips while winter car camping at campgrounds. I packed up the homemade diy hot tent and all my gear and made my way to Mew Lake Campground in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada to set up the tent fully for the very first time and see how it would do. Check out the videos to see the full hot tent set up, the finished product and to see what happened during the first use. If you want to know how to make your own hot tent, please click the link below. Hope you enjoy the videos. Cheers!
Thank you to Janice Boustead for filming the initial set up for me and for the support.

Love the tent. Good job. A tip that really helped me out. Wash all material first in hot water and dry hot. It tightens and shrinks making it easier later on and easier to waterproof. Good job

Great looking backcountry condo you've built there. I didn't realize that it would be 14' wide and 10' deep. I was thinking it would be the reverse. I agree with your assessment that some extra support is needed for the middle of the panels. Perhaps snow trekker style pull outs on the outside.

Nice job on the tent!! Very impressed! Lots of room for extended trips. I did notice you didn’t have a damper on your stove, not sure if thats by design but you might want to invest in one to better regulate the stove and save some wood 😉 Best wishes from Alberta, Michael & Emse 🐶

The Emporium Outdoors thank you very much for the compliment. My damper is actually broken and I have a new one I’m picking up on Saturday. @@CamperChristina Ahhh Interesting. I run the same stove but smaller - Its sold by Snowtrekker but its a Kin-co. I made my own damper as there was a shipping error when I first got it. Great new winter tent ! I’ve always wanted to do a floor like that in my 10x12 canvas tent. I’ll have to watch for a deal on tiles. Also you might want to wait for warmer temperatures to water proof your tent. I had a friend a few years ago do it in the cold and it didn’t work very well. I’m thinking of going to Mews for that gathering. From past videos it looks like tons of fun. Take care and looking forward to part 2.

sue zaple thank you so much Sue. I love the windows and yes you can see the stars and the moon through the windows at night. It’s lovely. As for putting a tarp down on the snow it gets incredibly slippery and makes it dangerous to walk on. That is why I went with the foam mats. Cheers.

Lord Marshall Thank you for checking out the video and for the great compliments. I appreciate it. It is not worth it in any way to sell the tents.. There’s no money in it whatsoever and I am not a tent maker I am an adventurer and explorer. This tent is made of the same material as the other two. Painters dropcloth from Home Depot. Next week I will be publishing part one of the series of how I made the tent and it will include all the information of all the materials that I used. Hope to hear from you again soon! Cheers !

Lord Marshall thank you. Sorry I hope I wasn’t short with you there. I think about three people a day suggest I should start selling them. With the waterproofing and fire retardant the tent cost approximately $750. I spent a minimum 40 hours making it so you can see fairly easily why it wouldn’t really be a great business idea. Lol. +Bo Nilsson I know! I haven’t heard from you in quite some time. You’re going to have to catch up on my summer videos. I did some really cool trips! The floor is fine and doesn’t pop up or come apart when you walk on it. It’s great insulation and helps keep the tent warm. It won’t be coming on the backcountry trips with me however. It’s just for car camping. When are you going to make your tent? I’m waiting to see it.

Hi Christina. Looks like you're really living in style. 😃😃😃 Hoping to start sewing my hot tent soon. I'm a little concerned whether my machine will handle it. Can you tell me a bit about your sewing machine and whether it has stood up well through 3 tents?
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 4 года назад
Vicki hi Vicki. I have a stradavara sewing machine I picked up about 15 years ago at a garage sale. It’s not special. it’s just a regular sewing machine. I use regular leather needles, no surger, no special tools, nothing. Just a basic sewing machine that needs to be cleaned and oiled every once in a while. It is the same machine I have used for all three tents.
@vicki5631
@vicki5631 4 года назад
Thanks for the reply Christina. My machine is considerably newer. I suspect yours is considerably stronger though lol. I have made hammocks and tarps on my but they were only ripstop. I'll give it a go.
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 4 года назад
@@vicki5631 If you use the same canvas I did, it is only 8 ounces. it is not thick in any way. The only time I have trouble is when I am joining 4 pieces together, like where the top and the sides cojoin together but even then, I just raise the presser foot as high as it will go and drop it there an stitch. The only thing I would caution you about otherwise is the glues. Double sided tape, sticky sided Velcro and bias tape. Stay away from these as they will gum up the needle and create tonnes of havoc. I just purchase the Velcro without the sticky on it and steer clear of the area where I use any double sided tape. :) LMK if you need help. :)
@vicki5631
@vicki5631 4 года назад
Thank you very much for that advice. I was considering the bias tape. I was wondering if that would make it easier. Better to know ahead it won't. I grabbed the canvas drop cloth and was just going to give it a wash and see if it would shrink some. I'm using info gleaned from your previous vids and others. I'll probably be asking questions.
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 4 года назад
Vicki Not sure why you would wash it? I don’t think there’s any need. I have never washed any of my canvas before using it for any of the 3 tents I’ve made.

@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 4 года назад
Thank you so much Victor. About 40 hours but I am filming all of this as well so give or take. Also it took me an entire day just to cut the 4 panels out because I was alone and had to spend countless hours moving and spreading out the canvas. Having someone help could save a lot of time. I would say maybe 20-30 hours of actual sewing etc. That first day of cutting took me 9 hours cause I had to constantly move the canvas around due to space issues and no one assisting me. See you Saturday!!! :) Can't wait!
