Ten plus years ago I set myself the challenge to invent simplest and best battery a child or anyone can build for almost no money. My answer was to take empty can of beans, take old metal sharpener (they are usually made of magnesium of Al-Mg alloy), tie wire to that through hole and twist tight (optional, seal exposed copper part of wire with glue), then fill can with half sand putting the sharpener about 2/3 down inside the sand. Then for cathode, jam a lot of steel wool on top of sand and seal on lid so that it compress the steel wool strongly. Make holes in the lid and pour in saturated salt solution. Rusting steel wool acts as air cathode with some catalytic properties. Make positive contact to case and negative wire through hole of lid.
Don't crush the activated carbon. Put the carbon inside the microwave oven 15 minutes it will spark but will be fine. At the end you will have nanotubes.

Thank you very much for sharing this video you got a good voltage for the Al-Air battery. Have you run the Al-Air for a long time and does the oxide layer build up and then the voltage would fall?
why are aluminium KOH batteries not rechargeable if Al(OH)4− + 3e− ⇌ Al(s) + 4OH− / it is a reversible reaction. why is it called an air battery? does it have to be without a sealed container? what if it was in a sealed container what would happen?
Yes it is reversible, but in what conditions. It is needed a good amount of power to reverse. Metal air is called because they need air to operate. Other battery chemistiys have metal oxides which are more limited in capacity for example. Metal air cells need to be open, or better to say,.... they need to have some hole that the air can go in to react. Most of the time the air cathode is made from activated carbon, some catalyst and teflone layer. By hearing aids zinc air batteries have also holes for air flow, but before use the hole is covered. If you seal the metal air battery you will limit the oxygen and for that reason you will limit the capacity.
@@cayrex I think I understand professor. So the Aluminium is oxidised by the KOH in air using the oxygen in the air and i suppose this produces some aluminium oxide everytime the battery is in use ? if that is true then i realise whats happening, aluminium oxide ofcourse is very difficult to reduce back to aluminium (as in bauxite to aluminium production) - this would lead to its degredation and would not be a valid rechargeable battery is that right? sorry to deflect from this video but in reference to your other video the zinc bromide battery which is really amazing, would it be possible to use two graphite electrodes with activated carbon instead of zinc ? if so, would this have the same perfromance as the zinc anode? i saw another one of your videos where you mentioned that if we use dual graphite battery then the electrolyte must be a liquid solution, or organic solution.

Not able to connect Al air cells in series. If we put two cells in different compartments and connect negative of one to the positive of other. Isnt that enough to get series or it doesnt work like that ? 🤔
@@cayrex I wish it is something I can construct. I wish it is something I can build for use with my panels. I wish there is a full set of foolproof instructions that I can follow to accomplish building it.
Mechanically "recharging" you can all cells. But chemical recharging is a bit hard. Iron air battery is rechargeable,... but use other electrolyte. Search for iron air battery.
@@StefanWiswedel hmm,... the tech in battery: The battery materials are non-toxic. As of early 2014, the cathode used manganese oxide and relies on intercalation reactions. The anode was a titanium phosphate (NaTi2(PO4)3). The electrolyte was 2 mm)
@@cayrex maybe not so DIY then. Busy looking at @robertmurraysmiths rechargeable aluminium battery. Making a deep eutectic solvent going to be a challenge. Will play with some other electrolytes.
