I dont often laugh out loud watching videos but “my parents used to eat them like they are going to be outlawed” was awesome and the look on your face after eating the squeeze pouch then drinking was great! Keep up the good work I look forward to Sunday morning with you. God bless

The "slammer" product reminds me of what we make with our masticating juicer. A handful of fresh parsley, a slice of raw beet, carrots and one or two apples to fill your glass, you now have power juice. No one ever knows there is a little bit of beet juice in the finished product. Most curry we have found turns out to be flavour cubes and now reside in our pantry for days we are motivated to use them. Everything is packed in a protective box with all Japanese printing. We did find one Japanese curry ready to go in a sachet. Rather small serving size but same as you, chicken to the rescue. No chicken available in sachets but we did find two brands in different size cans and we are surprised with the excellent quality of the contents. This AM was Sunday in the Philippines and we had a product testing. 1. A meal we thought was a Korean style macaroni & cheese turned out to be an extruded rice product resembling rigatoni in a sauce that tasted something like the cheese from a Kraft dinner with some tomato sauce in the mix. The troops were neutral on this saying"yes, but only if we had to." 2. Next up was the infamous Completes-Swedish meatballs, and pasta in a creamy sauce. Total thumbs down! We teach our brood not to waste food and they are aware we do not suffer as so many here in the Phils often do. I ate that one as an example to the troops. 3. The hit of the day was three (3) single serve packs of Kraft mac & cheese purchased on our recent haul from S&R Wholesale. Some canned ham was sliced and diced and added to the mix. One more main dish approved by the troops. The remaining ham and some bacon was used to make Beautiful Daughters favourite, Red Flannel Hash! I super enjoy sharing some "country cookin" from the US with our young troops. Not a camp or emergency meal unless you are a dedicated cook. It takes time to steam the fresh beets and the potatoes. We could make this with canned beets but have yet to find any canned potatoes to make this a practical camp meal.The hash, with some gently, slow cooked fluffy scrambled eggs became our late lunch.

I've lived my entire life in tornado alley and only recently moved away. It's a thing for me to have a case of water, three days of food for everyone in the house plus two people, flashlight, radio, and a couple of wool blankets in the "tornado cave." I never had to crack them open except for cycling them out, but it was always a minor comfort when bunkering down that, if it did hit us, we'd have food or water for a few days. Your videos remind me so much of what I'd do.
@dadbudgetadventures

People in general see me doing these kits and want to think we are preparing for the apocalypse. Your situation is exactly what I tell people to be ready for. If it never happens, great, you rotate your stock and eat the stuff you rotate out. But the day you are forced to dig into your preps you’ll be so glad you took the time to do it right.

My preference, to accompany curry, is Bens Ready Rice (in a retort pouch) Coconut Jasmine flavored. People who are surprised at the prices at Publix are the same type of people who are surprised at the general lack of customer service at Wallyworld 😆 I’m not sure what went on at Publix but they are very proud of their products. I recently switched back to shopping at Harris Teeter (owned by Kroger). HT has upped their game and not their prices. Just my opinion

I'm making meals ahead of time and freezing them in aluminum take out trays to reheat in the truckers lunchbox. I’ve been trying to think of places to suggest that you haven’t tried yet, and can only come up with Ingles grocery stores and maybe Food Lion grocery stores. We have Ingles in north Georgia and the Food Lions are in North Carolina I believe. If you’re near those try them out. I love those silly little "baby food" applesauce mixed packets. Even when they put carrots or beets in them. They tend to last a while, they are pretty durable, and they have quite a bit of nutrition in them as well as water and fiber - something MREs tend to lack. Even if they make you pucker up, eat your vegetables... 😀 If you haven't done so already, Costco sells a pouch of lentils that is awesome with rice. Continue to love the content! Keep it up!

Good video. I have found our local Publix is a little pricey. Probably to cover the cost of stuff like the bakery or deli which has high wastage. What is in any store is set by the marketing people who look at the ethnic breakdown and market from there. Indian food turns up because it has a relatively lower cost to produce and so higher profit.

Great video!!! I would be interested in seeing you put together an MRE spice pack which does not include salt. Not single serving spices in an MRE, but a small kit you keep with your MRE's to boost flavor when the packaged food just isn't quite as palatable as you thought it would be. In other words, what 3 or 4 or maybe 5 spices (not salt) would you recommend to make MRE's tasty no matter how bland the actual food?

I noticed that a lot of those were Indian. I think if you go to the international food market (Global foods or H-Mart) you might find other types.

As someone who needs to be really hungry and in a site with, shall we say, luxurious plumbing to want to eat Indian food, the reason you see a lot of it is that vegan food is EASY to put in a can or pouch. Meat is either perfect or it's botulism, which is why the FDA has hysterics about people home canning things like beef and chicken, ignoring that it was done safely for generations. The regulations also allow you to have a longer shelf life on vegan stuff. So pouched indian food is cheap, basically idiot proof, and at least it takes like something unlike, say, naked chick peas would. And some of us just want a shelf stable cornish pastie that isn't these Bridgeport 85% bread things, even if ends up being a spam stuffed poptart.
@dadbudgetadventures
@dadbudgetadventures 2 месяца назад
That sounds reasonable. As far as shelf stable sandwiches, I think it could be done if there was demand for it but so far the all bread no filling stuff is the norm.

No Publix where I live but there's probably no Meijer where you are... I like Indian food OK but why is it that the vast majority instant meals in pouches seems to be spicy Indian food? Next most common is some kind of Spanish rice or Tex/Mex types of dishes. Why no Chinese food in a pouch? No Spaghetti in a pouch? I do sometimes see some Japanese rice balls in pouches online but they require a lot of hot water.

Solely curiosity. Are there not good preserved meats and canned fish and seafoods in the US? Because over here in Europe, I am Portuguese, half German, its common to use them as a long lasting source of protein and food. I have always been an outdoors guy, all my life, mostly Portugal, Spain and South France, and I use canned sardines, tuna, all kind of fish and seafoods, and even some vegetarian options, made of pickled and preserved vegetables, and the preserved meats, that you just need to protect from dust and excessive humidity. Just curious because usually I just see you use canned meats that are, usually, not very good. Also, do you use dried vegetables like apples, pears, orange, etc, and dried mushrooms? Because I have taken, for example some rice, some dry mushrooms, cook them in boiling water all together, season it, in the plate add some tomato caned sardines (that last literally at least 1 year or more, perfectly eatable, I have ate 2 year old sardines and they were good as long as the can is intact) or preserved meats (we literally hang them in the kitchen in rural houses and eat them all year long, things like ham and multiple varieties of "chorizo" and wurst type meats and ham). And there are also the hard cheeses that last, well, almost indefinitely (I hate cheese so I cant comment on those) Just curious.

In the states, canned meats are almost alien. What we have tends to be sub-par and made with leftover scraps nobody else would use. I see so many options for canned bread, meats, and cheese in foreign markets but here, it’s rare to find anything good.

@@dadbudgetadventures Thank you, now I understand. I would not use sub par food either, especially if it is meant to last, but here we have it available and of good quality (some quality sardines or other canned seafood or meats can be purchased by as little from € 1,50 up to € 3,00 for example). Good videos by the way.
