Learn how to do varroa mite treatment with a Provap oxalic acid vaporizer (oav) and recently see recent modifications to my homemade Provap. More and more beekeepers are turning to oxalic acid to treat varroa mites on honey bees. Using oxalic acid vaporizers is very cost effective and does a great job.
OAV treamtments should be done at least 3 times, 5-7 days apart.

For different size cucups, heaters, and /or outside temps, the tuning constants may have to be changed. That is for ever set of condition, the tuning values could change. But, a fixed set of values can be arrived at to cover most operating conditions with the device you have made or purchased. I have been using these PID's for 50 years as a control system engineer.

I'll try again. I figured out a quick way to clear clogs in the stem after finding a wire just wouldn't clear that last bend. Water and the steam it creates works but slows down the heat cycle. My solution is keeping a mini torch close by. Just heat the tube with the flame and poof the clog is turned to vapor, and you haven't cooled your pot. The $500.00 model keeps the bends of the stem touching the pot, so the heat keeps it clear. Getting tight bends without crimping is the trick there.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 года назад
@VaderSpade That is a great little trick. Now I will share a trick with you, Fill the copper tubing with solder after it cools then bend the tubing as you want and it will not crimp. Afterward heat the tubing and melt the solder out.
@VaderSpade
@VaderSpade 4 года назад
@@JCsBees I will give that a try. I'll use low temp solder for the bending trick. BUT I just bought a MAP gas torch and some high temp solder to better hold the tube in the pot. I bought the MK 350 and I'm rebuilding it. I can't believe they used low temp solder solder to hold the stem in place???

I used brass for the bottom of my vaporizer along with the heat wrap. I still have the temp swings as well. To clear that clogged tube I put a cap full of water just like the OA. I’ve also moved to stainless steel tubing to make it more rigid.

Every time that I watch your channel, I learn something. Thanks for helping me to be better bee keeper. I have been using a Pro Vap with success for the past 2 years. I use a car battery with an inverter and it works just great - I don't need to bring a generator with me. The battery will easily do my 18 hives, and I suspect that it would do double that without needing a recharge. Use a deep cycle battery, like for boats, and just keep it on a trickle charger in between use. Any good inverter would work to convert from 12 volt to 120. I did, just out of curiosity, buy and try the small Ryobi inverter that uses the Ryobi lithium batteries. It did not work for my provap. Thanks again for everything.

Jason you can clean out the OA build up in the tube by putting some water in your OA cup and after it comes back to temp invert to allow the steam to clean out your tube.....works great. You just want to do it before the tube is completely blocked.

Before the many smart people put plans and videos online to make your own I bought the JohnO EZ Vap. At ~$160 and no labor it turns out to have been a good decision. On a separate note, OA is naturally found in honey. In Europe there is no requirement to remove supers when treating. My newest interest for research is percentage of phonetic vs capped mites. If early data holds up it would appear that only a very small percentage of the total mite load is phonetic and we know OA does nothing to mites behind cappings. This data would suggest that to be effective OAV would need several treatment very close together. I’m sure there is abundant data out there i just need to dig it up.

Here is how I did the set up. A infrared thermometer is a must, I had a Thermoworks IR for years cost 89$ you can get a cheap one from Amazon about 30$. Fist check the accuracy of the sensor, adjust as needed. I explain simple method on BYB Facebook. The goal here is to have the cookpot floor temp above 320 and below 350 F at the point where the out light goes off. I found if you turn on unit, let it go to set point then cool down below set point then when the out light comes on be ready to dump 1 gram dose OA into cook pot as light goes out. The PID must be in Auto Tune so once you do one OA dump within 30 seconds pop the lid off and shoot the IR thermometer for cookpot floor temp. With my set point at 455.5 the floor is just above 320 which is perfect. If the floor is above 370 then you have destroyed the OA into useless vapor. Parameters, in OP select self-tuning, under RUN select manual inhibit, under PID control period I set one second, "P" I set to 120, "I" set it to 500, "D" set it to 500 also. The key is auto tune and setting the set temp to achieve pot floor temp between 320/350 after it runs the second time to the set point temp. Once you have that the PID has now locked in the procedure it must use to achieve the set point temp and hold it there,

Jason, I made a homemade queen cell warmer, and I struggled a bit with the temp. But after some testing with another thermometer I was able to see the temperature at the probe for the heater mat was still rising, but the temperature above that would stay close to my set temperature. Different type thing, but if you can get a secondary temp gauge you may be able to dial it in better.

JMOBEE There are tuning constants for the PID controller. P should be ~4 I should be ~70 and D ~ 30 These pid's have a self tuning setting. If it is used to "tune" the PID, it will off shoot ~20deg and then undershoot ~15 and will then set the values. Also for less than ~5 amps through the SSR a heat sink is not needed and ;putting one in the enclosure doesn't get the heat away. After the pot reaches temp, there is many watts lost across the SSR
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 года назад
So your saying I could safely remove the SSR and the PID will be fine? If that's the case I could make the whole setup smaller in size and weight, that would be nice.
@janvierott4493
@janvierott4493 4 года назад
@@JCsBees not the SSR but the Alum heat sink is not needed below ~5Amps
@janvierott4493
@janvierott4493 4 года назад
@@JCsBees The SSR and the heat sink or 2 different things. You need the SSR but not the alum finned heat sink below ~5A. The PID puts out ~5VDC to the SSR. The SSR to a solid state relay that can handle large amps. Above ~5A a bigger heat sink is needed to get the heat generated at the junction of the silicon chip inside the plastic package away from the chip. The "chip" is fastened to the metal plate on the bottom of the plastic case. The metal plate is a small heat sink. When working at high amps, the chips can get real hot and burn up if a bigger heat sink is not used. Been working with these things SSR's, SCR's, TRIAC's; etc since 1967 and have seen them smoke. They generally fails shorted whereas a relay generally fails open. There are PID's that have a relay output and are rated for up to ~3A. That may be the reason that the PROVAP110 only has a 250watt heater. 250/115 = ~2A. There are SSR's that can be run by a relay output. They use a control voltage of ~115vac or some have a relay resistor combination control that can use the isolated relay in the PID to turn them on.

Looks pretty slick! I am no expert by any means but if 435 degrees is an optimum temp for the vapor and I seen the temp climb to roughly 478.. I don't really think that would be detrimental to creating the vapor. If it were 550 degrees, that may be more of an issue. However, while you are trying to get it squared away would it be possible to simply flip the toggle switch off as soon as you reach temp for a few seconds and click it back on again (would take some experimenting in itself)? Pain in the butt since you just want it to work the way it should but I have no experience with these controllers at all to help much more than that. Thanks for sharing!

It was a fun project but i also have had problems tuning my inkbird. one site that was really helpful was (barley and hops brewing)tuning my inkbird) one question about yours holding temp. How much alum. Mass do you have in your cookpot.ive played with diff size mass and temp.im thinking a little more mass might help you hold temp better. Im still trying to fix tube clogging problem. Looks like looks like your vapor tube leaves bowl at top mine goes thru alum mass then ninetys and goes out bottom side and still has clogging problem.

My base is decent sized you just can't see most of it due to copper coupling. I was having trouble with the heat transferring to the steel bracket base but a few washer used for spacers has solved that issue. My tube does come out toward the top, it's about 1/2" from the top to allow room for the cap.

Yes. There is a wand you can buy.

And the drizzle method using oxalic acid. Many other methods using formic acid plus many other chemical methods. Oxalic acid appears to be the cheapest method IMHO, and possibly the most effective, also IMHO.

We have lots of golden rod and need rain badly too. I would guess the lack of rain will make for little fall flow.

Has anyone thought of building a long barrel OA vaporizer, sort of like a rifle type? It would save your back from bending over & be much safer away from the face. I think it would be faster.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
The problem I see with that is the longer the tubing the quicker it cools, so it would be extreme hard to get it all to temp.. I do like your thinking though, my back hates bend for too long.
@robertramsey-turner7530
@robertramsey-turner7530 4 года назад
@@JCsBees A problem that is very real. The longer the delivery tube, the more the OA condenses back to crystals. My home made vaporizer has about 3.5 inches of 1/4 inch copper tube and its too long and I need to shorten it

It has been working good for two years now. If you go to the web site for the pro vap 110 you will see that is what they say it should be.

@mikesbeesllc

Oxalic Acid vaporizes at 157 C., about 315 F.. The pro vap 100 temp will drop from the 230C start temp when the acid drops into the pot. My Johno EZ Vap drops from about 450F to 330F when the acid hits the pot. Both units recover fairly quickly to the starting temp but by then the acid is vaporized. When building one, worry more about the temp the unit drops to when the acid hits the pot. You want about 160C or 330F.

Jason, I haven't built a "pro-vap" but I have built a PID temp controller. I use It for my lead melting pot for casting casting. I used a MYPIN brand PID. It always over shoots the first or second time it cycles but then its able to maintain within 4 degrees F. The secret with mine was to let it auto tune twice. I don't have the settings but if you go to Johnny's Reloading Bench on You-Tube he has a great tutorial on building and setting a PID controller. I think this is the vid where he talks about the settings ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KFVcrtQ_pdQ.html . One other thought, what if you put more thermal mass into the heater area? Maybe a solid plug of metal on the bottom? Hope this helps some.

Jason- I am a newbie. Just finished my 3rd treatment this weekend. I did not remove my supers. I do not plan to harvest any this year. Leaving it all for the bees. Is this ok? Will it harm Honey?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
It will not harm the honey for the bees but it will absorb into comb in supers making that comb no good for storing honey for human consumption. I would take the time to remove them or block them off.

This might help too if you have the same model ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GruBmsVSnsc.html in your video in the instructions under run option it looks like yours has autotune too, i thought it strange for a Pid controller not to have one thiugh i might be wrong as its oretty hard to read on the video. hope you get it sorted. I'll share my settings once i get time to finish it, don't hold your breath.
