Learn how to do Oxalic acid vaporizer treatment (OAV) and knock down your mite count. In this video, I show step by step how to use an oxalic acid vaporizer wand. The procedure is about the same with a Provap.
~Treatment Timing Sequence~
Treatment Stage: 2 min. 30 sec.
Power Off Stage: 2 min.
Wand Removed/Hive sealed Finishing Stage: 10 min.
Tips:
-Morning/ Evening treatments are best
-Remove or block off honey supers
-Treat each colony at least 3 times, spacing out treatments 5 to 7 days apart
-Be very careful with wand as it gets very hot

My bottom boards use #8 mesh. There is 1/4 space underneath the mesh. This allows for sliding in a piece of oiled poster board during treatment so as to catch the dead mites. This gives some notion as to how light or heavy the mite load is or how effective your treatments are. Hth. Thanks J.

Thanks for comfirming that most of how I figured it was supposed to work was correct! I never remember how long to leave mine hooked up to our battery booster (easier to carry than car battery and plugs in where the electric fence does) so every time before I stick it in a hive, I do a test burn with a timer, I think last time I did it was only a minute and a half for everything to be gone, then I leave it in for at least that long just to make sure, then remove the wand and leave them sealed in with it while I get ready for the next one. I also have done test burns on wood and paper and my wand doesn't get hot enough to scorch anything. I do often wind up with dead bees in the little cup when I pull it out though so I've thought about making a screened lid for the wand. I like your idea of swapping the bottom boards for your nucs, but couldn't you just pop the whole nuc, screened bottom and all, on top of that bottom board and have the OAV come up through the existing screened bottom board and not have to detach it? I've had to reconfigure a few of our hives (flip the bottom board upside down, essentially) because the bottom boards were too short to allow my wand in, and on our full sized ones with screened bottom boards I found the wand got caught on the screening when I slid it in. We also use entrance reducers for a lot of the year (ie any time there could be robbing, or for any new colony just establishing itself so the larger hives don't Get Ideas) so I try to make sure the ones I make have an opening big enough for the wand. If we ever get bigger than a dozen hives, I think we'll have to invest in a ProVap though, much quicker and easier from what I've seen.

Easy to understand video for those that have no idea where to begin! I started our OAV treatments last month. I try to do our treatments in the evenings to get most of the bees. Mid day still gets the nurse bees treated. I use a wand type like you show but as you say, once you get past 8-10 hives/NUCs, it gets drawn out and slow. Another point is many bottom boards only have a 3/8" rim/opening and most OAV wands will not fit in the opening. OAV is easy to use and works! Make sure to use safety equipment.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 года назад
@Tony West First let me say how nice it is to see you in the comments. I remember you keeping me in the loop last fall about your mite counts, it was very interesting to follow along. Good point about the bottom boards, never gave that much though and I should have. And yes everyone should wear safety equipment even the teacher in this video. All I can say is do as I preach not as I do. lol

I appreciate your effort to make a clear instructional video like this. I do have a question: At the beginning of this video, you mentioned robbing and big hives vs your nucs. I have a typical Langstroth hive, kind of big, etc. I've built a couple mini hives that I'm going to put package bees into in the spring. Is it a given that the big colony will try to rob the smaller colonies? Or will a strong, but small, colony be able to keep the raiders at bay?

I made mine and i have an extension cord on it. Whatever time I use to heat the wand up , is the same time after heating it up that I leave it in the hive. If it takes 4 minutes to evaporate the OA then I leave it an additional 4 minutes inside the hive. Any more time does not do anything except wast time. The wand heats the OA which goes into a vapor state and the OA vapor will leave the hot wand. At this point the wand is done with its job of delivering the OA acid into the air. The OA acid will cool down very fast and will crystallize again in a fine powdery substance which will settle on anything that is cooler than the evaporation point of the OA.

Good video, I use similar bottom boards to seal off my hives when treating. I found that I had to remove the metal plate as the wand was wasting energy heating it and in one case the wand shorted after the terminals grounded on the plate

Oxalic acid vapors can damage your lungs if you breathe them in. You should be wearing a respirator (rated for organic acid vapors) when doing an OAV treatment. Eye protection would also be a good idea.

Hi J.C. There is a beekeeper on RU-vid named Binnie. He recently said that OAV treatments spaced as you show here (very nicely I might add), are flat wrong and "not even close" in controlling varroa. I'm in disagreement with his premise and think you are correct with the 7-day periodicity. How are you proving your results? And do you agree with going off-label on treatments? I am of the school of thought that approved methods must be strictly adhered to regarding treatment cycles and other parameters. Looking forward to your opinion. I thoroughly enjoy your practical approach, largely because I agree with you. Bob Binnie is the gentleman I'm referring to.

Thanks for the video Jason. I am anticipating you answer to setting the PID on your homemade pro type vaporizer. I have done as you have suggested with a slight few modifications and need to know the most import part, how to set up the ink bird. I am at the same point as you are, or were with this problem. Thanks, and keep up the good videos. Phillip Hall
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 года назад
@phillip hall I played around with it more and realized I did not calibrate my k type thermo-couple. So I changed the PID temp to 120°f and added some water to the cook pot. I also set a thermometer in the water. After the cook pot heated up there was roughly 15 degrees difference in readings between PID and thermometer. So I went into the PID under "IP"mode then went to "SC" setting and set mine for -15°f. That has helped a bunch. I will share a video very soon on all I have done it hopes it helps.

Thanks, glad you've enjoyed my content. I have noticed the dark wax too from brood comb. I think all the life cycles of brood comb stains the wax making it darker. Can I OAV the empty supers and get all the bees at once? Will Oxalic Acid Vapors leave unwanted residue and taint next years honey crop? @Michael Mroz This is a great question. It will leave residue behind for next years crop. You could wait a couple days then pull them to treat, by then they should have them pretty clean. Chris it’s taken me 7 years to build up a population of mite resist bees it’s very possible at first my colonies did suffer major losses but I kept a great mite count on hives figured I’d lose them all but slowly I found that one hive of carnies was keeping the count at acceptable level and well she was cloned and other queens were pinched and replaced some queens carried the picking trait I called it they were picking off and killing the mights and by fall I was back to healthy hives and I did it again if a hive suffered low numbers and eventually now I use no treatment at all not for 3 years healthy bees ! And normal mite counts ! I know people need to treat if they don’t have time or the luck to start off with a queen who passed on a great picking gene 🧬 now my nucs and queens are golden by my local keeper friends my only worry is thinning the gene pool ya know to many of my queens out there !

It could be a disease which makes the bees lose orientation. Younger nurse bees that never have been outside and that may end outside of the hive for whatever reason may not know how to fly yet, their wing muscles may not have been developed or strong enough at that stage.

I like to start mid August but I am slightly behind this year. I will do this treatment at least 3 more times with OAV. Then I may do the Dribble Method in late November.

What is the min temperature you can use oxalic Acid at?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 2 года назад
I've done it at 38°F and had decent results.

What is the coldest temp to use safely ?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 года назад
It's my understanding that 37°F is the lowest temp OAV should be used and before doing it you should puff the colony with some smoke to break the bees cluster so they can all be treated.

Use the timer on your cell phone. It counts tenths of seconds.

@@JCsBees so many people buy those expensive video cameras to record and all they really need is a cell phone. The cell phone cost almost as much as well I guess it cost as much as some of those video cameras and does just as good a job. Thanks for the videos.👍🖖

Why do you do the treatment what is it for an do..?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 3 года назад
Treatment is to kill varroa mites which make bees sick. Mites are a lot like ticks that people get when outside working.

I've watched several videos about this over the years and am trying to figure out if all of you are vaporizing empty or weak hives for the videos., I've tried it all times of the the day and night and still have several thousand bees come roaring out of the hive, all the videos look like they are treating pet bees. I seldom use a vail but when I'm treating mine, on comes the vail and now even tape my pant legs.

I'm sorry but I had to laugh. Yes, I am treating real live bees, no fake trickery here. lol It's sounds to me like you have some very aggressive bees or your in a dearth. If your in a dearth I would wait until you have a flow or offer some syrup.
@olddave4833
@olddave4833 3 года назад
@@JCsBees no dearth and I have kept 1-1 sugar water on these 4 hives all summer, just thee four.. what's the point of taking out the wand after 2 minutes, I find that about 10000 more bees come out with the wand so I just leave it in ten minutes..
@FloryJohann

Bees usually do not like if you put stuff into their hive. So some may be more aggressive to fight off intruders like the wand. My bees are gentle and they act more like pets at least most at the time and they do not attack when I put the wand in, they just want to get inside the hive after I remove the rag. If you got Russian bees there is a possibility. My supplier for the wooden ware got Russian bees and the bees attack him when he enters the bee yard, so it may matter what bees you have.
@olddave4833
@olddave4833 3 года назад
@@FloryJohann I've found that they are pretty good if they are up and out flying, but then half the bees do not get treated, I'm going to make a new entrance stick so I don't have to take out the whole front when treating and cover it with a wet towel. have an opening just large enough for the wand., a few may get out but maybe the bees will not get so angry.
@FloryJohann

@@olddave4833 About 1/3 of the hive are foragers. Capped brood got the most mites. Then come the nurse bees that may have a lot too. Foragers have the least amount of mites, unless they are robbing a dead hive/colony that collapsed with a big mite problem. Your approach with that modified entrance may work great, You may never know unless you try. Let me know how it works out.

I don’t understand why the recommended treatment period is only 21 days when varroa favour drones that take 24 days to mature. 🤔
@FloryJohann
@FloryJohann 3 года назад
That is why I treat every 5 days of 5 treatments total which is 25 days and I use 2 grams of OA each treatment.

You can treat at night. I’ve done it wearing a red light headlamp.
@FloryJohann

Is there a reason? Most mites are in the brood and many are on nurse bees. Nurse bees do not fly and they stay in the hive to take care of the brood. There are very little mites on foragers unless they rob a mite infested hive out. This treatment will not kill mites inside capped cells/ capped brood. OA will only kill only for 1 or 2 days per treatment

i never remove supers, or wait 10 minutes. or the 5 min.. just burn the acid and on to the next hive

Open feeding is never a good thing... feral bees also participate.. they bring their mite loads and who knows what else....
