How to make authentic Malaysian flatbread or famously known as roti canai. Fluffy and soft with crispy edges. This homemade dough is very easy to prepare and manipulate. No fancy flying technique needed when stretching your roti canai and you can still enjoy these delicious roti canai at the convenience of your home.
NOTE: Add also 1 tsp salt (not shown in the video :D) together with the flour and the rest.

as a malaysian i can see the quality of roti canai in malaysia have dropped from 20 years ago. When i was a kid most roti canai is flaky, crispy and fragrant. Nowadays not many stall can achieve that kind of quality anymore. For anyone who want to experience good roti canai try to find malay roti canai maker somewhere in the peninsula west coast, kl or negeri sembilan, melaka johor. Their roti canai is more crispy and flaky. Roti canai is Malaysia peninsular east coast taste a bit different.

I made it today ( 14 june) and its really nice. Its very simple and delicious. My father like it so much because its been like 3 month he didn't eat roti canai because of the corona. Unfortunetly, I forgot to ask my mum to buy some chicken to make curry, so my father eat it with some sugar. Btw i'm only 16 but i can follow the instruction so its very easy.

In the 60-70s, most of the shape is round and exactly like that. It's much more better and crunchier then the square ones. It's Pratha to the Singaporean and Canai to the Malaysian. My mother cook it this way. Love it ! 👍👍👍

I ate this whenever I could at a Mamak. I cannot wait for the opportunity to return to Malaysia. I was enchanted by roti canai. Sadly enough, mine did not turn out as good as yours. I guess more practice is needed. It lost its layered texture and was not flaky and soft, but hard and dry; even tho I stretched and folded it multiple times and also applied a generous amount of butter. :/

This video just transported me back to my Brunei years. We ate roti for afternoon snack! When we ordered it from the Indian restaurant, they would ask: roti kusong or roti telur? I personally liked the one with telur. The roti, whether you chose telur or kusong, came with condensed milk on the side. You tear a bit of the hot roti and dip it to the milk. It was heavenly!
@elmundoeats
@elmundoeats 6 лет назад
Ahhh so that's how they do it in Brunei! That's great, I need to try it like that. You're right, roti telur is delicious! I'm just so amused of you knowing so much about these meals! Awesome! In Malaysia, my family, we like to have roti canai for breakfast get together. Sometimes I would buy up until 30 pieces for the whole clan!

I am from Malaysia. I have tried making twice roti canai from RU-vid recipes. I made them and they are nice on pictures though but my family found them a bit stretchy and chewy. I would think they are more like roti prata than roti canai. The authentic roti canai from Malaysia is fluffy, light and crisp. I bumped into your channel and like the way it was made. Now my buttery dough balls are hibernating in the fridge :) Will be taking them out after 6 hours. Can’t wait to see the end result. By the way any idea how long should the balls seat the fridge to get the optimum result ?

Traditionally in Malaysia, the children would dip their roti canai in either castor sugar or condensed milk; while the adults dip them in dhaal, or curry! It is more commonly eaten with curry tho so you're technically consuming it in the authentic way if you're planning to have it as a savoury dish.

Hi, just found your channel and subscribed! If I want to freeze it, it can be done both ways right for the cooked canai and also freeze the dough after I flattened it out? Thanks 👍🏻😘💕🇸🇬

luvjoesong you freeze them after forming the discs. Every time you want to eat one, take one frozen disc and fry on the griddle on low heat, straight out of the freezer.

This is one of those things that might look easy but it's not. Our family love Malaysian food and roti canai. I tried this and the dough kept breaking when stretching it. Should the dough be cold when stretching it?

Hi! Sorry to hear that. I’ve made with the dough directly from the fridge and at room temperature with no problem. But yes, when at room temperature it’s easier/faster to handle. Did you use bread flour?
@marcbaril6471
