These are my homemade wooden covers for chromatic harmonica Suzuki Sirius 64. I made them from walnut wood with a Dremel and sandpaper (my first Dremel project). The difference in sound comparing to the original metal covers is surprisingly small. I think the wooden covers sound slightly more bright and full, especially in the low tones.
To make the covers, I ordered a wooden strip (walnut wood) from an internet shop, 12 mm x 36 mm, 400 mm length (I had to shorten it to the length of the original covers). First I made the boreholes, then I formed the inner shape using a Dremel. The outer shape is made using a Dremel and sandpaper. Finally, I sanded the covers and applied a few coats of acrylic clear coat (non-toxic). Leave your comments!

I had the same thought after playing a harmonica with plastic covers… It actually vibrated a lot more than a metal cover, and I liked the sound. Reminded me of what I’ve learned about acoustic guitars, it’s really all about the vibration of the top of the guitar. Your RU-vid video was interesting in this way, got me thinking about the possibility that the tone could change a bit by changing covers

Great and good difference. But the Sirius have a serious issue: the ABS comb. A dont like plastic music instruments. For exemple, I play sax too and I never used Hard Rubber mounthpiece. Only Steel mounthpiece. So my dream harmonica comb is Steel or wood. Because of this I use Hohner 270. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks for your comment! I can understand that you want to do without plastic when it comes to musical instruments.

I was actually looking to buy some walnut today for the exact same project. It definitely looks cooler with wooden covers! You did a very good job! Sound wise, however, I feel only a very subtle difference if any. Maybe it's the RU-vid. How do you yourself like the new sound?

Thanks for the praise! I also think that the wooden covers look better. The new sound is slightly better (fuller, especially in the lower octave, but not much), probably because there's a little bit more space between the reeds and the cover's inside. Or it's the influence of the material, I'm not exactly sure. If I had to choose, I would go with the wooden covers. Have fun and success with your project!

Very well crafted indeed! I've Red Sandalwood covers on my Suzuki Sirius s 64.. The only difference is in the density of walnut wood & red sandalwood. My harmonica cover has a triangular support in the middle against the Harmonica Comb as a whole part of the cover plate. You've good hands in wooden craftsmanship. With best wishes from Hamburg Lohbrügge Germany. Ich kann fließend Deutsch sprechen. Aber in Ihrer Kanalbeschreibung ist es in Englisch. Grüße an Sie 🤔😁

Not much difference in sound quality my opinion. I prefer to stay with the original covers. What makes real changes in the sound is the material the comb was made, such as wooden, aluminium, ABS etc.

I also find that there is hardly any difference in sound between metal and wood. If I had known this beforehand, I might not have made the wooden covers at all. But now that I have them, I use them because I like the look. But the metal covers are also very good. It may be that the material of the comb is more important than that of the covers.
