In this Video Lecture, Professor introduces the Concept of Homeostasis in the Body and then describes the components of a Homeostatic Reflex and a "Negative Feedback Response" to stresses. Reference is made to Claude Bernard, Walter Cannon, Innate Reflexes, Learned Reflexes, Receptors, Reflex Centers,Set-Points, Effectors, afferent & efferent pathways, Neural Reflexes, Hormonal Reflexes and Neuro-Homonal Reflexes.

Professor Fink, I've been so out of touch with basic medical subjects and was finding it so hard to get back to studying again, yours is the first lecture that I watched to completion in years, comprehended and enjoyed absolutely. I have to thank you so much for putting out this amazing energy into teaching and I know I won't be able to thank you enough for these lectures, I feel like studying all over again and it makes me feel so happy. thank you so much for helping millions of students like me

Thank you so much for the great lectures!!! I love your teaching style. I was wondering if you can answer the following question: Is it possible for people to change the Bicarbonate level of their ESF by digesting Bicarbonate powder? Also there is a recent diet out there that recommends avoiding foods with pH other than around 7. Would it even matter what pH the food is at if the stomach's acidity is at around 2. Thank you!
@professorfink
@professorfink 5 лет назад
The body in general (& the Respiratory & Renal Systems specifically) act to maintain the proper pH of the body fluids. Certainly, ingesting acidic foods or alkaline foods or ingesting bicarbonate all "stress" the body systems to compensate and maintain the proper pH. In normal healthy people, moderate increases in acidic or alkaline foods or bicarbonate should easily be compensated for. However, in people with impaired organ systems will have reduced ability to adequately compensate.

Thank You so much for your lectures professor. Can you tell me the name of the physiology textbook that you refer to in this lecture? Also, am I correct to say that the "homeostatic reflexes" you mention in this lecture are the same as a "stress response" that I have heard other medical professionals constantly refer to? In short are these synonymous terms?
@professorfink
@professorfink 8 лет назад
Homeostatic Reflexes include Temperature Regulation, Pupillary Light Reflexes, Skeletal Muscular Reflexes, Conditioned (Learned) Reflexes, Hormonal Reflexes, as well as the Sympathetic Stress Response Reflex. ALL of these are "Homeostatic" Reflexes. The "book" that I am using to present the lectures is one that I assembled. Sir, You are an excellent teacher and this video, too, like many of your videos, is really helpful for it focusses on conceptual understanding . I am interested to know 1) which book are students in this course using (the book in which temp. Regulation is in chapter 25)? 2) how can we buy your material if we live in country like India
@professorfink
@professorfink 5 лет назад
The chapter references are to the textbook Tortora's Principles of Anatomy & Physiology

Professor Fink, How does an individual cell maintain homeostasis? Is the process similar to the circular process you have described above for macroscopic physiology.....i.e. Receptor...Control Center....Effector. Is it the same for the individual cell?...i.e. with the receptor proteins, the semi-permeable membrane (as the control center) and the effector proteins. In other words, could we say that the homeostatic process - the negative feedback loop...... is it a fractal process at the different levels of biological organization? Does an individual cell have "set points" for the things that it needs to control for its internal environment through the ion channels; potassium, sodium, water, etc. Your feedback and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank You sir :)

Thank you for the lectures but doesn't the brain secret hormones?
@Bayo106
@Bayo106 8 лет назад
no. the endocrine glands secrete hormones into blood. some of those glands (pineal, hypothalamus) secrete hormones so you are almost correct
@professorfink
@professorfink 8 лет назад
The neurons in the Adrenal Medulla secrete epinephrine -- a neurotransmitter hormone. And there are many neurons in the Hypothalamus that secrete neurotransmitters into the bloodstream, including ADH & Oxytocin.
