The schools shut down my sons first year of Kindergarten. So we thought for 1st grade we would do the virtual learning through the school and it was a nightmare. So as afraid and nervous as I was we jumped into homeschooling the last half of first grade and it was awesome. We loved it so much we are homeschooling again this year! We may never go back to public school. I’m thankful for being thrown into this journey as it’s become something I love! The freedom and peace we have this year has been so worth the hard days. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks!!

I'm so happy for you!! Just remember, YOU don't have to already know everything. You are learning alongside with him. You are showing him how much fun it is to learn. Instilling the love of learning, knowing how to think things through, thinking outside the box, critical thinking skills, is so rewarding and will be a great asset for the rest of his life. I hope that made sense.

I truly don't understand the hype with gather round. Yes its beautiful, yes its a great concept. But it did not deliver at all. It was very boring and I felt like I was reading google internet searches. I wasn't a fan of all the reading. Hard to keep kids attention with that much reading IMO

I like Gather Round. It’s always about adapting the curriculum to your children. You can’t read the TG in full to a 6yo or 8yo, but a high schooler needs all of that content. I like that it gives us all the same topic and the depth can be adjusted by age!

In your opinion is it ok to begin homeschool in the middle of the school year? Public school is failing my 4th grader. I have to do something
@moodsofkiwi9285
@moodsofkiwi9285 2 года назад
@@Beastiscntrlr I have seen it done before and yes, I think you could do it mid-school year! I do think it depends on the reason he’s struggling. Is it due to the poor public education system (ex. Class size, low quality teacher, curriculum choices)? If so then I think pulling him out mid-year is a great idea since he’s not gaining anything from a public school environment. If it’s due to any learning disabilities, then I’d probably seek out a 405 plan, IEP, or see if there’s accommodations he can get within the public school environment until he finishes the school year (to see if that’s all he needs). I’m sorry your little one is struggling. It’s hard to do well in public education and a lot of children do get left behind.
@Beastiscntrlr
@Beastiscntrlr 2 года назад
@@moodsofkiwi9285 thank you! His grades plummeted after one semester of virtual last year! He ended spring barely passing 3rd. He is ending this semester with a 70 in English and 73 in math. I’ve reached out multiple times to his teachers about sending home practice work or giving me their objectives so I can help. He doesn’t even have a book to bring home. He NEVER has English homework and once a week he has math homework. He just can’t get the help he needs. Not to mention a classmate tried to fight him in the restroom 😩 it’s all become too much for me. I absolutely don’t think he has a learning disability though. He just needs some one on one help.

The curriculum you are using to work with Rosie is likely intentionally created using plain graphics as not to overwhelm kids with special needs who struggle with sensory issues as well as concentration issues and find colorful and busy pages difficult.
@mummagirl
@mummagirl 3 года назад
I agree , myself and our kiddos are all neurodiverse and find colourful pretty pages highly distracting. Black and white and basic font works for us . But i do love the look of some of the pretty stuff 🤣
@DesMowadeng
@DesMowadeng 3 года назад
@@mummagirl I think that's natural and many of us learn to accept what we can't change or stuff down what we find difficult. We become really good at masking as well when accommodation like BW basic pages are harder to find because society deem pretty and more colorful things "better". I think in small doses as long as you are aware of what you can personally handle may explain why you can tolerate pretty or busy/colorful things for periods of time.

I taught first and second grade for 11 years until I got Lyme Disease and got very ill. I’m at the end of the 11 years and the pandemic hit. I was horrified for my children to do this virtual school thing. So I dove in feet first and homeschooled two out of three of my children. I had one 8th grader and one 4th grader. It was the hardest year in my teaching career but the best. We used Gather Round last fall and it was great!!! My boys learned so much!! My youngest wanted to continue with me for a second year so we are back at it this year and I couldn’t be happier. I am really curious how AP and IB exams work for homeschool, I am not a homeschooling mom yet, but I am just so curious. I know Kennedy is going into high school, so I was wondering if you have put much thought or consideration in for these exams, as I started taking them as a freshman. I ask because for me theses classes were some of my favorite in high school, and enabled me to be so much farther ahead in college which was an amazing blessing, as I was able to graduate early and with almost no debt (which has been so amazing).

You can just have your student go somewhere that tests for those and have them take the tests. It takes a bit of looking, but homeschoolers can and do take AP tests.
@JasperAlley
@JasperAlley 3 года назад
AP tests have a specific way that they do things--I imagine it would be difficult to teach and practice that at home. If you're hoping for college credit, it might be easier and yield more credits to do dual enrollment in an online college or community college.

I have 2 boys, my oldest being 3 years old and I am just starting to dabble in researching homeschooling. I never thought I would, never wanted to, it had really never crossed my mind as an option. But with all of the changes I’ve seen in the last few years with whats being accepted, what’s being taught, and what’s being pushed onto our children - I feel this yearning to protect my children. And homeschooling is a huge way I can do that. It’s so overwhelming to me, I was never homeschooled so I don’t have anything to go off of, it just feels so daunting! I feel like I’m not smart enough to be their teacher, that I’ll be giving them a subpar education and that’s my biggest fear. I’ve been watching so many of your homeschooling videos (& others as well) to get my mind wrapped around the possibility. Thank you for sharing. 🖤

Morning basket is a way to group family subjects like Bible, read alouds, memorization etc. Pam Barnhill has a great podcast called Your Morning Basket that gives a lot of ideas about combining ages groups and prioritizing the "Truth, goodness, and beauty" subjects. What this looks like for my 2 and 4 year old: calendar, hymn, bible story, scripture recitation, one nursery rhyme, one poem, poetry recitation, read aloud ( sounds like a lot but nothing lasts more than 5 minutes and we can do most of it while my 4 year is jumping up and down on the couch-- always moving but he absorbs everything. 2 isn't required to participate but she listens and repeats words here and there-- she loves to climb on my lap and point to things in our books)

Please do the nature notebooking video. We are military family moving to Guam and I think that could be a fun way to explore the island and help my kids with settling in.

I have an adult son on the spectrum, and he is now 25, but for various reason I home schooled him on an off thru his non college years and I always say this trust your gut, you are your childs most accurate advocate what I mean by that is you know Rosie better then anyone, like I know my Sam, we did send him to highschool so he got socialization I only gave him 2 siblings so you got me beat there and for activities like theater which he loved still loves, my point is trust yourself and your family because you will always do the best thing, my son who they told me would be in a home, has a bachelor's degree and is at home with us and is so much more then what others expectations were. Love your channel, also ordered a Lottie shirt an sticker, loving the merch. God bless you family.

I was about to get super defensive and click out before you explained your view on what TV propagates..... it humbled me lol, you are 100% right in the caricatures and stereotyping that happens (it becomes a pop culture constructed cycle)

I am not homeschooling quite yet, but when i start I will definitely rewatch a bunch of your videos! 💜😊 so good and practical. Thank you!! I completely agree about reading! My 4 siblings and I all read so much for school growing up a ton. We learned so so much from it! I have 4 and 2yr old girls and they already love reading and collecting books. My husband and I feed it as often as possible by reading to them and buying as many as possible. Your ideas and life are so much how my parents did us in homeschooling💜. We had a farm and my mom even taught us things like sewing, baking, cooking supper, home making, she had us go through a manners book together as well and we all did music and learned instruments We all had our things we did on the farm and we all LOVED it!! 😊 Makes me so happy to know these ideals are still around!! Oh and I grew up with no TV and we learned just fine! We went places and did so many field trips during school and since my dad was a preacher we lived all different places! I dont feel like we missed out at all!! 🙂

I love that you've been sneaking a little reveal of the playroom 😂 I banned those kid shows from my house too. Why in the world is there all this garbage on TV for kids that seriously enforces all the behaviors we are trying to keep away? It has never made any sense to me. Incorporating Julia Rothman's farm anatomy book in our homeschool this year as well. I got a printable companion notebook to go with it & I'm so excited to use them together.

Unsolicited advice from an Internet stranger: never let your baby/kids expect silence to sleep!!! :-) Do yourself many favors and help them sleep through typical life noises. Playing music or white noise during naps and night sleep can help a lot with this.

Thank you for this information. I am a mom of 5 and I am strongly considering to homeschool at least my seventh grader, second and preschooler . I am extremely nervous, more because my husband doesn’t think that is a good idea, because of the extra work that this will be on my end . After watching several of your videos I think I’m just going to give it a try without his approval. Pray for me. thank you

Can you give a link to all about reading? We are strongly considering homeschooling. I just looked up the Abeka program (I would love to know your thoughts! It is for sure an expensive program but if it’s good for new homeschool kids/teachers then I’m down!) This year has already started off so weird and unstable. I’m nervous and overwhelmed by the idea but know that with God all things are possible. Thank you for sharing your homeschooling!

I completely agree about Gather Round. I've tried it, and I just don't see how it is appropriate for the college bound tween/teen. I DO see how it would be great for teaching a group of elementary students. Re: TV, my kids don't watch it for all the reasons you mention and more. They do watch the news with me, and it is a big part of our homeschool/discussion civics routine. One time my 9 y o daughter needed a medical procedure and the nurse tried to turn the clinic room tv on for distraction purposes. When asked which channel she'd like, my daughter told the nurse a certain news channel that I'll leave un-named. The nurse said that was a first! I said, "she's homeschooled". lol. Yea, we educate all day!
