I could be soooo envious; what a fantastic homeschool "suite"! (I am a JD turned stay at home mom, then homeschool mom, and now retired.) We homeschooled 4th -12th grade, and sadly did not have a designated room. Our family room basically became the homeschool room with charts in the corner, a tall file cabinet that offered magnetic display, and a white-board that was prone to travel all over the house! (The now college freshman would not let me get rid of the whiteboard when I de-schooled the house this year. He has used it for tutoring since!) I would have LOVED to have had such a beautifully organized and roomy space as your school rooms. Congratulations on creating such a stimulating and inviting environment for your children. It is absolutely awesome. (FYI: There is a study, the details of which I cannot recall, that correlated children's IQs to the number of books in a home: The more books, the higher the IQs, even if the books were not read! We used it to make ourselves feel better about our own book addiction, LOL. However, that being said, your kids will no doubt all be Mensa candidates!) Best wishes on your homeschool journey. If I had it to do all over again I would make the same choice, but would add on a school room first, or move to a larger house! ;-)
Aw, thank you for watching and taking the time to leave such a sweet comment. It's been an exciting first year of homeschooling for sure. One nice thing about homeschooling is that it provided a convenient justification for my obvious book addiction. 😀 I'm thinking about replacing the striped couch with a dining table, just to have more space for our messy projects. And we could still snuggle on the couch in the other room for reading. Just thinking aloud . . . Thanks for the support and encouragement! I'll take any advice!
I think the table sounds like a great idea. Our informal dining room is actually a library dining room. LOL. It's surrounded by book cabinets. My son did tons of homeschool at that table, not to mention science projects, etc. It was very convenient for us.
Hi L C, just for curiosity, did you homeschool only a child? I have only a child and I am not sure if homeschooling him would jeopardize his social skills, since he does not have siblings to play with everyday...
Your organization gives me happy feelings! I love the couch in the school room. It's one of two things I'd love to have in our school room. And your library is beautiful! -Hana
I love your homeschool room as well! If I had my way, the entire house would be lined with bookshelves. And the couch comes in handy for all the jumping, puppet shows, and lay-down read-alouds. 🙂
What a huge spacious beautiful space you have ther. We study everywhere in my house from the dining table , coffee table , kitchen etc as we don't have a dedicated area.
This was supposed to be the family room, but I commandeered it (hmm, that doesn't look like it's spelled right) for homeschooling. My husband wasn't thrilled that I took down a TV and replaced it with the whiteboard, lol! I love the idea of homeschooling on the dining table - if I had known we would start homeschooling, I would have purchased a much sturdier, marker-safe one - without cloth-covered chairs. Thanks so much for watching!
That is one drool-worthy homeschool room! You've done a beautiful job setting it up. I know I would absolutely enjoy using that space, and so would my kids. Thanks for sharing! ~Em
Em, thanks so much! We snagged a bigger table at a garage sale a few weeks ago, and we're so happy! And I need to buy more bookshelves to support my thrifted books habit. Lol.
I see less ADHD, and more OCD. This is well beyond our reach. It seems we will stay in perpetual chaos. We will keep watching your progress. Good luck!
Thanks! We just moved, and I won't have a homeschool room in our new house - I admit, I'm freaking out just a tad. But, then again, I think it'll be fun to figure out how to homeschool in a different way.
Only been homeschooling about a year and a half. Our room is and may forever be a work in progress but i am working on it to finally be our dream homeschool room we envision. I have thrifted a lot but i am also aiming for as simple of a room as possible. I only have one child so I'm sure that helps since i don't have multiple grades.
This was my dream homeschool space, but we've moved twice since then and I still miss it. LOL! We did kitchen table schooling for the last 2 years and it wasn't my jam, but next year we will be doing homeschool in a dedicated space again and I'm so excited!
Two of my favourite things in this video: Your philosophy about the Fruit of the Spirit. We are secular as well and I have always loved the Fruit of the SPirit and have a painting of it hanging in our classroom. The other thing is your missing pieces basket. I heard you start mentioning it and I knew exactly what you were doing! LOL. I have the same sort of basket on my desk.
What's not to love about the Fruit of the Spirit, right? It's a good reminder to me whenever I'm being less than kind or patient. And I'd be a goner without my "Missing Things" basket. I recently converted it into a jar. With a lid. Because I have a 2 year old. Enough said.
I found my way here through Timberdoodle's Blog Team page, and I am super excited to check out your channel. I love your school room and all of your organization/school tips. Thank you for sharing your awesome space with all of us.
Beautiful warm colors, I love your homeschooling room, you put a lot of work into the room to looks like! I have a 2month old, but I just love reading into future curriculum, just for fun really lol.
Loved your homeschool space. You have it nicely wrapped around and use up all space. You must get lot of sun light with big windows. So jealous of your book collection...love..love..love. Thanks for sharing Tanya.
Thanks, Syeda! Is that how to spell your name? Yes, I love the light that the room gets - it makes us all more cheerful. :) I have a book addiction - when I got to the book decluttering section of Marie Kondo's book, I just skipped it. Lol!
I enjoy the colors in your homeschool room. We use them in our house and a lot of people comment on our boys' bedroom video about how we should paint everything white, but we love those darker, cozier colors!
Thanks so much! I’m a big fan of deep, moody hues offset by bright gypsy colors. I keep wanting to love the white aesthetic, but it looks so boring and (now) common to me. Not to mention high maintenance. Gypsy style is very easy for kid-households, lol!
I know, right? I found the discount/oversupply school shop on Craigslist. Maybe you should check for your area! They had so many wonderful things - like giant bulletin boards, chalkboards, and preschool art tables - all for ridiculously low prices!
Wow! What an inspirational learning space! I really love it. We school in our kitchen/dining room, increasingly thinking I'd like to convert our sitting room into a school room. Ha, I need to start negotiating ;)) Have a great weekend ☺️
Thanks! It's funny, now we're moving and I might try to homeschool in the kitchen/dinning room in our new home. Just to have the giant table! But we have truly enjoyed having this giant space.
We haven’t lived in this house for a couple years, so we’ve been schooling at the kitchen table as well. But I’ll admit that I miss that space so much. 😊
I love, love, love your homeschooling space! Thanks so much for making this video and sharing it. I think you have it laid out wonderfully. I love the couch in the middle of the floor. We used to have ours that way in our living room. The room is just so inviting. After one look, you just want to go pick a book and snuggle up on the couch with a cozy blanket. I love the playroom rules picture. I might steal that idea from you in the future. (tehe) Everything is well organized, which really helps to keep your day going as smoothly as possible. Idea: You can also use the trampoline for when the kids are spelling their words for practice or when they are reciting their multiplication tables. The rhythm of the bouncing helps the information stick a little better. We used to have a mini trampoline and that's what my daughter did and it helped a lot. I'm so excited for you, that you have such a wonderful selection of resources to pull from. It certainly helps to make your job planning and keeping the kiddos entertained a lot easier. I can't believe you haven't been homeschooling all that long. You've got this homeschooling thing nailed. Thanks again for showing us your rooms. LOVE IT!
Thanks so much, Tonya! I love your idea about using the trampoline for spelling -- right now we just use it for math facts and anytime they get the wiggles. I'm still working on the homeschooling gig, but at least I've got it all organized. It helps so much to know where everything is, and to lay it out simply enough for the kids to put away their own things.
I loved your tour! Why are homeschooling room tours so extremely fulfilling to watch? I love them! I really liked your mommy behavior chart as well...I might need to add that to mine. :)
I know! I can fall into a bottomless pit of watching everyone's homeschool room tours. And then I watch them again. And rewind just so I can get a better glimpse of a particular wire basket. I know, it's weird. And so, so satisfying. Lol!
p.s. The "old" desk you have in your media room is the type I used growing up attending the Catholic school. LOL (I'm not Catholic. We just attended the school as Protestants.) I have lots of memories getting our books and supplies out of beneath our seats. On the last day of school for the year, we'd have to empty out our desks and the teachers would have a bucket of water with a cleaning solution and a few rags in it, and we'd all take turns getting the rags and scrubbing down our desks inside and out to be stored for the summer. I remember when one time, the head nun (the Principal of the school) saw wads of gum stuck under the desktop of a fellow classmates desk, because we had to turn them over to scrub them. She had a fit, because we weren't even supposed to be chewing gum on school property! LOL Funny, the things you think of when something like your desk triggers your memory. Take care, Tanya. :)
The desk sparked similar memories for me! It's amazing how well-made those desks are - and they even have comfortable sloping seats so the seat doesn't dig into the backs of little knees. :)
+Marianne Reed, thanks! We have been lucky - we are moving soon, and I'm likely going to have to figure out homeschooling in a smaller space. But we have truly enjoyed this room!
I really love that standing globe :o and your couch is cute ^.^ Oh gosh that missing pieces basket is a great idea too! Thanks for sharing, I love how spacious the room is (:
What a lovely, inviting schoolroom! I especially love the bookcases. And the missing pieces basket is such a good idea! I am going to find a box or basket to use for that tonight. ;) I just found your channel, so I subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos. :)
Wow! Amazing!! How long have you been Homeschooling? I absolutely love your collection of everything! I didn't know you did CC... we considered it but changed our minds at the last minute.
Aww, thanks! I haven't been homeschooling for more than 5 months, but I've been collecting books and supplies like a closet wannabe homeschooler forever! CC has been full of good things and less-than-ideal things. After we finish our year, I'll be posting a review of our experience as secular homeschoolers. I'll always appreciate the people I met - lovely families.
love your tour! you have a great set up! you have so many great resources, love it!!!! the old school desk is very neat! i want those ikea bookshelves!!!!
Thanks!! I've been collecting slowly, like any good homeschooling wannabe. I'm so excited that we've finally begun to dig into all of it. IKEA is such a blessing!! My son's room is almost entirely IKEA. And everything is holding up just fine! But if it doesn't, no big deal! :)
Thanks for the tour. I have a bad book addiction....I mean REALLY bad ;o)....it's more of a homeschool curriculum addiction I guess....you name it, I have it....lol.....but I tell my husband that I could be addicted to worse things, so he should be thankful that the worst thing I'm doing is taking up all the walls in our house with bookshelves ;o)
We do secular homeschool in the sense that we’re not Christian, so we seek secular, non-religious materials. But I’m open to using any stellar materials - even if we need to explain or clarify our beliefs differ from the text to the kids.
+Amanda Ponder, if you check your own state’s regulations, it should state what they require. It varies from state to state. If you email me at contactprojecthappyhome@gmail.com, I’ll be happy to help you out!
Hi, my daughter is 8 years old and got diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 6 and the school is awful with supporting her and I've had so many problems there. All the teacher does is get on my case and makes me feel like a terrible mother and blames every issue in class on her. How did you decide homeschooling was the way to go?
+PaulaDaisy, I hear you. It's a tough position to be in - knowing that the current school environment isn't serving your child as well as you'd like, but also being unsure of the homeschooling alternative. For our family, I was still unsure when I decided to try homeschool for first grade. But I felt as though I had to try. I'd be lying if I said it's all been smooth sailing. But I can tell you this: my son's behavior and hyperemotional outbursts have improved immeasurably from having focused attention from me and lots of outdoor time. He and his sister are much closer. He has lots of friends. He's now far ahead of grade level. And, perhaps most importantly, he adamantly wants to homeschool next year. It is a tough choice, and it requires a lot of reflection. It's not only about your child, but also about you. I have so much I could say...perhaps I'll address it in a video. Just know that you know your child best. You love her the best. And it will come out alright if you let that love lead you.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. That is so kind of you to take the time. I'm letting her finish this school and doing research in the mean time to decide for next school year what is best. Watching your videos have been a blessing to me and I have been able to comprehend some things that not even Doctors can tell me. We are in a difficult situation but not an impossible one to surpass. I would love to see a video of you addressing this issue and others. I greatly appreciate it once again that you are sharing these videos. Its kind of nice to know I'm on the only one out there going through this...
My son has adhd and they're currently trying to rule out odd. He's definitely defiant but not classically odd in my opinion. I am going to homeschool him for 2nd grade for sure. Public school is definitely not for him. I agree with the op that they don't do much to help but instead scold me. I am so glad I found your channel. I taught him preschool at home but I'm a bit overwhelmed and nervous about teaching higher grades at home! Your channel will help a ton!
Lovely share and what a delightful homeschooling classroom! If you are interested in educational videos for children pop over to my kids learning channel. I'd love to hear what you think. Have a lovely day🌸
