I have never really had an issue with my children in school until we left FL and moved to Central TX which has been mind blowing to me. This video has truly been a blessing to me. Everything is becoming more and more corrupt in our beautiful country and all I can see now is that ten years ago when I wanted to do this, I wish I had. Nevertheless, I’m starting now (so late) with an 11th grader and 9th grader but we’re doing this. Thank you for how you’ve broken this down and so clearly and calmly shared your experience. THANK YOU with tears in my eyes; I’m so appreciative.
Hi Cody... Absolutely fascinating! You're so organized and in tune with everything and each child. You're so hands on in all you do. You're a true example of a Proverbs 31 woman!!! Abba has blessed you so abundantly! I love the family journaling, wish this would have been something we did when I was growing up over 60 years ago.
Just a little smile: I live among the Amish & Mennonites - Rod & Staff is actually Mennonite. And some of their schools now go to 10th grade. I have good memories of being homeschooled with some of Rod & Staff ❤❤❤
TY for being here and for taking the time to share. You & your channel are an absolute G-dsend...for this mum (dealing w/ ADD), while in the trenches of cultivating a whole person education w/ our neurodivergent & neurotypical presh DD's......TY so much...💓💕
Hi! I'm an Oklahoman with a farm. Our farm is having to wait for us, do to our miltary life. We currently live in Colorado, but it should be our last move. He has been in over 25 years. Miltary is a big reason we homeschool. Our youngest is "9th grade," and we will be back on the farm in Oklahoma her last homeschool year. We have homeschooled 15 years now. Thank you for sharing your life with us. GOD Bless!!!
Very helpful and encouraging. My first year homeschooling but I'm finding I like the approach of piecing together my own mix of Curriculum. For Language arts I like Spectrum language arts, Spelling and reading Workbooks. The instructions are simple and I can use their topics to teach a lesson on a small whiteboard and then have my daughter do the the actual worksheet in the Workbook as practice. For math we are using Khan Academy along with spectrum math workbooks for additional practice. History and science is done much in the same way as this video. I bought some children's encyclopedias in World History and American history. I just read them outloud and we discuss it. Museums and science center trips also get incorporated. My daughter is still young so I read the Bible to her but I'm considering the life application study bible for her in a few years Very inexpensive approach
Here is another tip. I have two planners. 1 for what I want them to get done. 1 for what we actually get done. This method helps so I can see the scope and sequence of what I would like to achieve. Hope this helps someone
My family and I just moved to Oklahoma! I have them enrolled in a charter mostly because we’re new to homeschool and choosing curriculum intimidates me. I love the ideas you shared in this video. You do a great job of simplifying this whole thing.
What school did you pic? I'm in Oklahoma and wanted a charter school but want one with self pace. I would do an online program but honestly I don't know what to do at this point. My kids are not at all interested in school whatsoever so it's very difficult. Would love to find a group for them to make friends outside of the home since we have no kids around us.
@@LuLuLately sorry! I just noticed this was you already answering my question! 🤦🏽♀️ Honestly, I don’t really do anything with my 4 year old at all that would be considered typical school stuff. We play with play dough and read books and play some counting games, but mostly she just learns through play right now. I probably won’t formally start her on anything for at least a year. For the 7 year old, have they been to a school yet? I’d start with a lot of read aloud time with them and work on learning letters and their sounds first but through songs and games, trying to make it feel the least like traditional school as possible!
Our Homeschool actually covers Bible before everything else for the day, and then the children get their individual curriculum schedule which they need to complete by the end of the week. I am in love with your methods. I will be repeating this video and taking note of all the material. God bless you for sharing.
@@Thetravelinghomesteaders They’re at school most of the time, it’s a gradual transition at this point so I just use the curriculum of their school when they’re at home.
Hope you are well! I would LOVE a video on how you use rod and staff math in your family. I think we will transition to it next year. However, because it was designed for classroom I am nervous about how user friendly it is as well as I heard there are a ton of problems! Since you are a more relaxed homeschooler like me I would love to hear how you use it and make it work in your family.
I was intrigued because I saw Rod and Staff math sitting there. :) We have also landed on Rod and Staff with much relief. I have a couple questions: 1) Do you use the grades 1 and 2 workbooks? 2) For levels 4 and up, where a lesson concept is presented in the student book, have you found you absolutely needed to teach the lesson in the teacher manual in order to keep them on top of the new concepts? 3) Are there any things in teaching (either things you skipped or did overmuch) that you will change as you take the rest of your kids through? Okay...what I really want to know is will I regret not using the little drill book? haha
I do use the 1st and 2nd grade workbooks, and I really like how repetitive they are! A little secret- I’ve never bought a single teachers manual. If there’s a concept I am struggling to teach without it, we look it up on RU-vid and have always found a great tutorial! Saves us time and money! As far as things we have skipped- yes. I didn’t do the metric system with my oldest two and now we travel outside of the us and have found we use it all the time. I won’t ever skip that again! As far as the drill books go…I’ve never used them and have never regretted it. 😉
I need to move to Oklahoma. NY is one of a handful of states that has the most strict Homeschooling requirements. Here in NY our kids have to be tested, we have to keep rigorous attendance/grading records as well as strict portfolio of our kids' work.
You have no idea how many times I have referenced this video! I just love it so much. Can I ask you a question about your high schooler? Do you do labs for science or add to the history to get your hours for a credit in? How do you scale that? I love family learning but I am thinking maybe for science I will have to break off with my soon-to-be high schooler. I would love to know how you make that work.
We keep doing the same history, but I add to it. For high school, I’ll have them write essays or do more research into whatever we are reading about. As far as science goes, I pretty much do the same thing. As we learn together as a family, I just make the high school version a little more advanced. It’s a great way for us to be able to stay together as a family but not be on too low of a level for my high schooler! I hope that helps!!
Yes, and that's what I would like to do. I guess since she is my first one I want to make sure I'm having her do enough IF she chooses the college route. I suppose if she is paying attention and not cheating she is doing more than I did!
I’m in NYC and it’s frustrating because the city won’t help with any questions you have for their requirements which are mandatory before you homeschool. They want you to figure it out or just give up and give in to public schooling. But your ideas are great. 😊
It’s so frustrating for sure! We have friends who homeschool in California and I’ve definitely seen how difficult other states have made it. It’s so worth it in the end!
Love this video! Can you share where you buy your clothes? I’ve seen several of your videos and I absolutely love your style! I’d love to know what brand/store you ship from 🙏🏼❤️
I can, but I’m afraid it’s not that impressive! 😂 Walmart and Target. I’ve also ordered several things from Everlane, which I really love! I try to shoot for natural fabrics as much as possible. Thank you so much though!
I draw a calendar on printer paper n write it out my self n tape it to the wall because if it’s out of sight it’s out of mined so if planners are not for you try that 😅
Thank you so much for sharing I love everything about what your doing! Thank you so much you have given me a path for starting homeschool the way I want to. Could you tell me what books you have been using for the different sciences?
I have done several different subjects within science, but usually I’ll just go to the library and look through several options that go with what we are learning then purchase whichever ones I like best! I’ve used some usborn books and books I’ve found at Sam’s club, so it’s really kinda random!
I’d love to share some of that! We just plan stuff out ourselves. Every time I’ve looked at a company, it just don’t fit with what we like to do. We love staying outside of the tourist areas to get a genuine feel of places like locals get.
I have ordered a whole box set of curriculum for this year. I like the fact it it Bible based, open and go and comes with score keys. BUT lol I long for something simple and is rich in classic lit. Do you have any suggestions for me lol? Can you give the link to the Homeschool planner?
Hi! Thank you for your video, it was very informative. We homeschool as well and are planning a trip to Greece for our family. Curious what resources you have found to learn about the history before your trip. Thank you!
We read through the first Story Of The World book that covers Greek history, found books in the library, and have the podcast Myths And History Of Greece and Rome going a lot!
I am so intrigued by story of the world but from what I understand they take a nonsecretarian approach to history not necessarily using a Christian world view. Has that been your experience? Has that been a challenge? I loved hearing your perspective. You seem so comfortable and brave in your roll as a teacher and our journey has just begun haha
It has been my experience, but we actually really love it. It’s just a book of facts. It has led to some really great organic conversations about what happened in history and how we would make that decision or not make that decision based on the truth we know from scripture. It has been a really great way to see how scripture can and does actually change things!
I heard that mystery of history is the Christian version of story of the world-- I'm actually going to try it this year. I wasn't head over heels for story of the world. It felt like it was all over-- for my mathy mind ;)
For younger kids, I really love the Froggy books and Biscuit books! I have several with fun workbooks that go along with them, but younger ages are mostly just read alouds and narration until they are old enough to start reading on their own. At that point, I try to organically transition from me reading to them reading.
I don’t change the months on the tabs, but the days in the month calendars aren’t filled in. I do fill the dates in those myself. As far as everything fitting, I write my breakfast at the top, my dinners at the bottom, and there’s plenty of room in the middle of each box for whatever else I need to write for that day! On top of that, there are additional pages for notes that I can use!
Having them be a part of your budgeting or discussions about budgeting/investing, etc helps them to learn without using a curriculum. It has helped my kiddos so much
Do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior Ma'am? He loves you so much that he died for all the world sin to give you a chance to reconcile to God the Father. Just remember this truth about it first, you must DIE a soulish death before he can regenerate you and grant you a new heart.
