Many studies show waiting until age 8 for formal instruction is best. Let kids play. My oldest didn't start formal instruction until 8 and he's 11 now and way ahead of his peers . My other three will wait until age 8 too. It's worth it. Don't let society make you feel "behind" or neglectful because you're not doing what everyone else is. You won't regret doing what's best for your kid. Every kid is different as well. Some are ready sooner, some later. Don't compare your kids, even to your own kids!

I have this experience too. Very cool. I did not let societal norms dictate when they started formal school and they excel in academics now…though at 10 & 8 I still mostly have a play & nature curriculum for them.

Agreed. Unfortunately some of us don’t have a choice. My state requires Kindergarten and compulsory age is 6. Now I can get away with play based learned. But some states require specific subjects.
@jenniferrush8231
@jenniferrush8231 Год назад
Question when u delay formal academics…. What level curriculums do you start with? Like my son is 5.5 and i held of starting kindergarten but i’m looking at getting his material setup for next year and hes learned most of what is in the curriculums. So i dont know do i look at first grade level curriculum? But i dont want him to be aggressively pushed! Lol but i also dont want him to be bored…
@FourWindsHomeschool
@FourWindsHomeschool Год назад
@@synthiaamaartir9553 that’s not entirely true. I’ve homeschooled and been homeschooled in multiple states. Yes you can unschool in all 50 to an extent, but some states DO require you cover certain subjects, and you do have to start education of some kind at certain ages. And there’s more to it than just a once a month email for attendance. My current state requires 185 days of attendance, and you have to fill out a bunch of information with the district as an independent homeschooler or join an umbrella school send attendance reports to them. Testing is required unless you join an umbrella school. Unschooling is easy in my state if you join an umbrella. But you can’t delay starting something until age 8 unfortunately. Other states require require subjects starting in Kindergarten (of all things!) so it’s not quite as simple as that.

We have a 5yo who did TGTB pre-K last year, and I planned on transitioning her slowly to their new Language Arts K this year. However, I learned as soon as I started flipping through the Kindergarten book that there’s a really big gap between the pre-K and the K books. The Kindergarten Prep language arts book is the perfect bridge between the two. It helps fill in any gaps, helps review, and also introduces pre-reading and some reading skills that are needed for the K book. All that to say, highly recommend the Kindergarten Prep book after the Pre-K book! It’s short, so we just started my daughter’s Kinder year with the prep book, and now we’ve finished it and are moving on to K.

I completely hear you, I work full time for a corporation, I am super pregnant, and have a 2 young children I'm home schooling. I am a 100% in a season where its just best to follow a curriculum to make sure I'm touching on everything. My youngest is using the preschool from good in the beautiful, and LOVES it! She even asks to do it often! Hope all goes well this year for you and your family! I love your approach to listening and watching your children to see if they are ready for certain school areas, we had done that with my oldest and he LOVES school and learning because we are showing him how great learning at his pace.

I'm coming into the preschool years for the first time, and would really love a video where you explain more about those other skills you were talking about, the ones that often don't get focused on enough. I feel like I know to do letters and numbers and shapes and colors and things like that, plus things like cutting and gluing skills, etc, but it sounds like there are other things that I could incorporate as well.
@annewhittemore3771
@annewhittemore3771 Год назад
I think maybe she meant more for kindergarten? TGTB incorporates a lot of different things like art appreciation and poetry and learning the calendar, idk. So many little things that I wouldn’t have thought of, like memorizing parents phone numbers, etc. But that’s in kindergarten. They keep it very interesting!

Hello!! I am an OG homeschooler, as in a homeschool kid that is now homeschooling her own kid. What a fun full circle! My mom did the Abeka videos my 6th-12th grade year. I will say that it was a very thorough education BUT it was torture. Ha! Unless they have updated them, all the videos are from classes in the 80s and each video was almost an hour long and so boring. It took a full 6-7 hours to finish each day, on top of the homework they assign. Yes.. homework. Just wanted to throw that out there!! I’m so sure you’ve done research but that’s just my firsthand experience.

My thinking was similar to yours, no rushing or pushing hard not really going by typical "grade level" it takes a lot of pressure off of me and them to think this way and I feel even more confident hearing this from you. As a former pre k teacher it means a lot to me that you'd start with mentioning the prek/k ideally isn't rushed into. I'm not sure how to put this in text well, but for the last 2 years we were a homeschool family. Last year my middle child did "Pre-K" and my toddler, on his own will, kept right up with his brother. Of course I have mixed feelings about sending the older 2 to school but I'm relieved my now 3yo won't be wiggling his way into kindergarten like he probably would be if we were homeschooling. Next year he'll probably be the first kid we actually send to prek, but until then he just needs more stories, more play, more exploration.

Just a tip- you can change the settings in IXL so that it shows a letter rather than a grade level. That way, if a kid is working on a skill that doesn’t match their grade level, they see Level C instead of 1st grade. (Also, for anyone who hasn’t gotten it yet- IXL = I excel.)
@annewhittemore3771
@annewhittemore3771 Год назад
Oh, that’s a really kind way of teaching. Good idea! No 3rd grader needs to see 1st grade when they’re struggling in an area!

Thank you for this video! My son turned 5 in May so I started his "kinder" year in Aug but I'm thinking I need to relax on it after watching this. We're working on letter recognition and sounds because a friend who has 3 homeschool kids said that's what I need to focus on. I too purchases the good and beautiful and I'm loving the curriculum. But I guess maybe I just need to slow down. He's always asking if school is over yet and we only do it for an hour or so.

I don’t homeschool but I really wish that I could! I can honestly say that putting my son his birthday is at the end of July in kindergarten right after that was The worst decision possible for him. He is technically my foster Sandra’s been in my home since birth and we’re waiting for his adoption. We basically have to do what the school directions to do but he had to repeat kindergarten because socially and academically he just was not ready to move on. oddly enough I made me think of myself as a child my birthday is at the end of June and while I was absolutely ready to start school being the youngest child in my class every year swas terrible. I think they should move the birthday deadline as a whole. Oh I always watch your homeschool videos And I hope that one day I can make the decision for both my kiddos and homeschool! Thank you for doing curriculum videos every year!

Abeka is fantastic, but it IS a LOT. And it's really not hands off in the Kindergarten/1st grade/2nd grade. It was where we began, and I'm still using it for my Kindergartener, but Parent-led- not computer led. I think that their phonics are absolutely amazing, but All About Reading does the same for a fraction of the cost, and their Math program is unbelievable as well, but Horizons is also similar & a fraction of the cost, but without the benefit of the computer for help. Their Science & History leave things to be desired, in my opinion. I switched away from those almost immediately.
@gracecoffeeandchaos.3446
@gracecoffeeandchaos.3446 Год назад
Knowing what curriculums you usually are drawn to, and the work load you have already, if you were to go with Abeka, I'd highly suggest doing it parent-led, but I also would say that you probably will like aspects of it, but won't probably LOVE it. And my kids ended many days in tears when that was our main curriculum. My now 8th grader has a genius IQ & Autism, and he cried daily. This year, we've gone with IEW, Horizons, Beautiful Feet, Apologia, and Masterbooks, and he is thriving. Zero days end in tears now, and he excels. My 2nd grader is using TGTB Level 1, Horizons Math, Abeka Handwriting, Notgrass History, and TGTB Science, and he is also thriving. Last year, he was still using Abeka & we struggled. I can't begin to describe the difference changing away from Abeka has made in my kids.
