Hey Tom do band members ever go to session players and ask "show me how you did that" before the band goes out on tour with the magic that you and your friends wrote for the album? It's obvious that you and your tribe are world class musicians. I always wondered if the guitar player for the band thought "how in the hell did they do that". Thx for what you do.
i've had a lot of touring guys contact me over the years asking me what tuning i used on this or that etc etc...a lot of times the artist will have their engineer go back into the original session files and extract the original "stems" that i played so that their guitar player can learn the part from hearing it solo'ed up....unfortunately some of the more "unsavory" artists do a bit more with those original stems than use them to teach their guitar player the parts haha....
I challenge all us homeskoolers to try a take of this (or something like it) and record and listen back to it... seems so simple, but listen to the consistency of both guys. There is nothing simple about clean consistent takes with no need to punch. There's no glamour in a lot things... except there is! Nails!
This what separates the men from the boys! No matter what mood you’re in, when you get to the studio you need to be the pro to make the track shine. There’s no I don’t feel like playing acoustic or this is boring- you just do it and make it sound real. These cats might be some of the most talented guys out there! And I thought he was just some nut with his iPhone in his garage when I first saw him
Can't get enough of these behind the scenes tracking videos. Thanks for sharing! Also, the fact that the drums sound so damn good - during tracking, coming from idle headphones, into a phone camera - is absolutely mindblowing. Although not surprising, considering it's Justin Niebank and Chris McHugh!
I couldn’t even hear the rest of the track and I was digging this groove. Great work boys. Appreciate your sharing, love these glimpses behind the curtain.
Hey Uncle - Thanks! God IS great! Sounds awesome as usual! Maybe, if you get a chance, you can talk about mics and headphones - tools of the studio guitarist? Curious what you think beyond the SM-57... *Gotta say those acoustics sound awesome! God Bless!
Totally love this kinda thing and could watch for hours!!! 😊 ... Thanks for sharing Tom... I'd imagine that getting permission/agreement to upload these fly on the wall sessions to RU-vid from whoever is paying you ain't easy either, so due credit to them for being so cool! 🤘😎
This made my day so much brighter. I can never get enough of watching these amazing players in the studio just doing what they do so well. What a killer vibe of a song.
Such a simple, beautiful groove you two created there, thank you! I checked out Kam's title track "Steady Heart,". Very solid vocalist, he's going to sound great singing over this.
Awesome. I love the acoustic session stuff you've posted. These are such enjoyable performances to listen to. Its clear how much the "jangling geetars" are adding a huge rhythmic impact to the song, maybe more than harmony. And its impressive how you guys are able to stay locked in on that feel, while still adding a relaxed, funky human feel to it. Real impressive.
Love these fly on the wall type looks into your session work Tom. The process may be old hat to you but, it's really interesting to the rest of us. Keep on rocking in the free world dude!
Thanks for this, great to see these behind-the-curtain (or blanket) glimpses of studio life. Also I never knew Noddy Holder could have been in AC/DC?? Great fact, I guess he was happy with his not insubstantial Christmas song royalties
This is gold. Nobody is too good to play the same lines a bazillion times. You just go until you wrap. You two seriously had Joan Osborne on your minds, eh? Thanks again, fellas! 🔥🎸🔥
Really enjoy your videos Tom. My approach to playing has improved just by watching over the years. I'm playing out now...a little. Hope you keep rolling brother.
Something I've been doing lately is watching how musicians move there bodies when they play. There seems to be something about feeling the music in more than just your fingers.
Did a session a year and a half ago where we did “gang guitars.” Got 5 dudes to play a bunch of guitars and permutations of the changes for a good 4 or 6 passes of a tune. One of the most entertaining sessions I’ve ever done, and what a sound.
Hi Billy 👋 My guess is that it might be “The Periscope” made by Scope Labs. It’s an omni-directional condenser mic with a built in compressor, very unique. Seems the perfect application for it here as a characterful room mic 🎙 I may well be wrong though 😔 Best wishes Billy and all my respect and love to Uncle Larry ✊
Thanks for posting these longer form unedited videos in the studio. As a guy who wants to get into the studio scene it’s very helpful and interesting to me
Thanks for sharing the process, and finding a way to make it intriguing to me. I always found tracking with my old band, very separate from “music” because creating it has always been my strong suit. Going to a click, was always the hardest thing to me. And even with a live drum track, playing the same thing over and over wore me down. I guess it’s different when you are slightly removed from the song, you can get out of your own way and perform. Bless the studio musicians! You guys are pros!
I actually sprayed my coffee at your "10 Sportsbar Blues Licks" comment!!! 😂 You kill me!! Thanks for the glorious share! You are a blessing, UL - never change!! Except for Jesus. 😉
I have to have this song. Rarely does a lick smash my heart the way this one did but man…I feel like I’ve been punched the chest. I love this…when will it be available and where? Please keep doing what you are doing, it’s amazing to see the process!
Noticed you are co writer of Greed, great song! Great female voices seem to find you. Joan Osborne is one of my absolute favorites also. Thanks for sharing all that you do, you live a great life and live it well.
Too Bad, I was a couple hours east in central PA and I got pulled on stage by other bands all the time to do my Bon Scott. I can still match most of the range, if not all on a good day. But it took some herbal courage and a good band for me to think about it. Tickled Pink was one of the bands I sang with a couple times.
That mic looks the one eye alien from my stepmother is an alien with Kim Basingerand Dan Ackroyd lol. Also loved the skynard riff it's my favorite riff of theirs.
@501chorusecho great stuff but I have to ask what was the artist you were working on with the Wook? That stream a few weeks ago had some killer tremolo sounds going.
Is that a 12-string that is actually in tune? Lol! Very rare…keep rockin! Y’all sound amazing together. Was it Dan that said just one acoustic at the beginning?? GENIUS!!🤘
So wonderful, Tom! We are extremely fortunate and grateful to you for providing us with yet another glimpse into the workings of professional musicians. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Question: do any Trip the Witch studio sessions exist?
I like seeing stuff like this. As long as someone is willing to pay for the time....have at it!!! BTW stopped the video at 21:10 for 20 min to riff that lick out for a bit...thanks gents!!
To the uninitiated it just looks like two dudes strumming acoustic guitars. No big deal, right? What they are missing is the consistency and precision with which you guys are performing. As a guitar player and engineer, I have to time correct and otherwise fix performances often. That’s why I can appreciate your talent. You make the engineers job easier. I enjoyed the peek inside your world.
Thanks for posting. I love witnessing the process, whether I am involved or not. Getting to watch the pros is a treat. When you were recording Plexi (I think, or maybe TTW) you mentioned how gratifying it was to work on your own stuff. Are there other projects that have given a measure of that type of gratification even though it was a day-job gig ?
