Now I'm 53, I live in Canada and my basement is full of amps and guitars, and during these crazy times here I am watching you my friend every day, intelligently articulating the magic of music. First of all I love these videos and your playing 😊 I’m a mostly self-taught guitarist, so I mean no disrespect when I say this... to my ear your piece you’re playing over sounds like it’s the key of E major... which would make the B maj the 5 and the F# min the 2. I’m not trying to be a dick or anything... I just want to know if I’m hearing it wrong or if there’s another way to look at it?

Almost two and a half years after this masterpiece was recorded, I'm back listening to it again. About the only piece of music I can compare this to in my musical library is Villanova Junction, making this probably the highest order of compliment that can be paid in my way of thinking. Thanks Tom, I doubt you'll ever fully comprehend how many lives you've touched and how much joy you gave us all at a time when joy was is short supply.

I just wanted to say thanks because unfortunately I don't get to isolate myself, as my job is considered essential, and with the added stress right now, I look forward to the end of my shifts, to come home and watch these videos. Honestly these videos are the most important for us musicians in this time and moment, especially guitarists but across the board. By the way, I had your boy Barry O'Neil at Xact Tone rebuild my pedalboard last year and you're right, not only is he a great guy but a fucking wizard. I was having tons of issues and he solved them all! It's dead quiet, sturdy and sounds amazing. As soon as I saw that he had done your boards, I reached out to him immediately....totally worth it!
I dig all of your videos Tom, and I love that you touched on the minor blues scale over major tonality problem that many beginners have. I contend though that the "sometimes it works" statement is worthy of an entire video. It is a staple of bluegrass, some rock and blues to go from the major blues tonality for the meat of a solo break, but then end the phrase on a minor blues lick. When used SPARINGLY, it can really add a nice tension before the resolution. Keep the good stuff coming Tom. Your videos make this weird time a little less weird.
So glad you’re doin this. Helps me as much as a songwriter as a guitarist. BTW a song you “saved” for us in a session just hit 10k streams 2 weeks after release. Your creativity in the moment, and selling it to the band, was pure genius 👏👏👏🙏

The great thing about discovering your videos is it's made me examine my playing. I love the fact that you talk about feel, phrasing, rushing, and all the other elements that I've taken for granted. You've also lit a fire under my ass to play more guitar which is always good.

I am ready to get back to work. This has been a really good experience, and certainly the highlight of the whole COVID period for me. I hope the pandemic will be over soon so that we can all get back to the plans we had. People respect you and act respectfully towards you, and towards each other as a consequence. A lot of the viewers here are older and probably understand the value of time more than younger people do. Probably all wishing that these personal conversations, which is what your daily uploads are, had happened 35 years ago. The power of connecting directly with an audience is on display here every day. I don’t really care so much that I am getting better at playing the guitar, but that is a much appreciated bonus. There are a lot of talented people in the group here and it has been a pleasure being a part of it and watching it take off.

Watching this again in full...the minor pentatonic blues over a major sound is something I see and hear all time too, very good point! Something I tried as a teenager and realized I was playing the wrong notes. I was missing out on the major third sound over a dominant 7th chord. Changed everything for me when I learned cord formulas...before that had to memorize chords out of a book. Understanding what key your and if you want a major, minor, or dominant sound..and how to use diminished sparingly. Know omg where all the notes on the guitar are. Trying to hear if it’s a minor or major third...wish I had you for lessons 30 years ago. Great stuff and love the progression and the melodies you come up with. It seems like chord tones are becoming hip again, thankfully.
Thank you for the no minor scales over the major chord progressions. I have never been able to make that sound good to my ears. I always play in the natural minor if I do that (If progression is in A major, I can play licks in F# minor) it always sounds great. Thanks a bunch, Tom, these videos are great.

It's perfect timing and adding the B back on top brings the whole thing together. Tom, Just wanted to say a bought the first Trigger Hippy cd, which I was unfamiliar with. My wife and I really live it and listened to it all weekend! I remember a great guitar teacher of mine used to say blues over major sounds like somebody whining and complaining.

One thing I know during all of this my calluses on my fingers have never been tougher than they are now and my poor pitiful short pinky finger is catching hell and has the most odd looking callus! God damn. Every single dude who’s ever had to endure touring with me knows the 5- is my favorite chord ever because I’ve obsessively talked their ears off about it. Between that and discovering the depths of Jellyfish’s brilliance yesterday, I feel like a whole new musician this last week, as you’ve given me a ton to chew on while I’m packing up all my shit to leave Nashville for good next week. Bittersweet? Maybe, but either way I needed to fall in love with music again now that it’s no longer my job and this is helping immensely.
That chord progression you played at the end was killer. It's just a little thing, but it inspired me to go into the garage, play it and try making something out of it. Simple is good and I'm glad you don't talk gear. Most of us, myself included, don't know how to use half the shit we got and we all talk like this pedal is a gift from god and that pedal someone else uses sucks, blah blah blah.
