Keeping any livestock or pets in challenging weather is always interesting… The snow that was forecast finally came in earnest and it’s so beautiful, but adds a layer of complexity to the normal daily homestead chores!
Hello from SW Canada and a foot of snow here too. You clean off the poly like I do 🤪 but the pile it created was actually pushing in the sides so I had to shovel it carefully away 🤦🏼♀️. Lovely homestead you have and look forward to seeing in spring. Have an awesome week, stay safe, Ali ☔️⛄️🥶🇨🇦
As a Scotsman living in the Azores (where we don't even get a frost), this beautiful winter wonderland does make me feel homesick. Thank you for sharing :)
I have to laugh, in nearly every video your Border Collie is desperate to play. My dog is the same, drives me mad. Nigh on impossible to chase him on this icy ground. Definitely don't want a broken leg or hip. I have chickens too, bantams. There is no comparison in the flavour with the mass produced shop eggs even if they do claim to be organic and free range. Love your videos.
Thank you! Yes he is a complete nightmare at times but I do love him 😆 I quite agree about the eggs, and every time you eat one you know exactly what went into it 😉
Snowfalls like that are a real sight to behold, but they sure do make everything a little bit harder. That is exactly why u check…😅 Cheers from Wisconsin, United States!
Hello 🙋♂️. The sculptured secret scenery of your location is breathtaking - and you have captured the amazing season changes from the start of your video blogs on YT !! My question: Your chickens 🐓 are housed in the “elements” notwithstanding they are undercover and no doubt “snuggle” 🥰 up to each other when in their coop 🛖 at night Is there a huge difference with regard disparity between; summer ☀️ and winter 🥶 with regard the laying of chicken 🥚 eggs, IE: summer, the hens will lay more than in winter ?? Is there a rooster 🐔 in the brood to ensure that there is some chance of fertilisation ?? Lastly: you mention that you feed your birds scrambled eggs 🍳- I never knew that you could do this !! Is there not a chance of you catching (CJD) either from the infected eggs or from the bird itself if you eat one of your chickens 🐓 as a treat ?? Thanks 🙏🫶✌️
Hi 👋🏼 Thanks for getting in touch. Sooo.. yes it’s fine to feed cooked eggs back to the chickens. Some people feed their chickens other animal proteins which we choose not to do, and also many flocks have at least one “egg eater” who will crack into the eggs to eat them raw before they are collected so I suspect any risk of contaminating something from the eggs is more likely in these cases. We have a small, healthy flock and any new birds (we bring in a few every spring) are quarantined before being integrated. Interestingly, especially when it’s cold, the flock tend to bed down together in the straw rather than roost up on the perches - this may be for warmth 🤷🏼♀️ We get eggs all year round but this does significantly drop in winter, and hens going through a moult stop laying altogether until their feathers grow back in. Just now we are getting around 5 eggs a day which isn’t bad for such short daylight hours. We do have a rooster, we’ve had him since he was a week old and he is a chilled, well mannered boy who keeps the girls in order and keeps an eye out for danger 😁
