I find that a critical mass of torpedo frigates can pretty much deal with anything. Well, ignoring Battlecruisers here of course. If necessary they can deal with destroyers (with heavy losses) if necessary though. Torpedos need to be upgraded for that.

Rushing out seems silly but works. Try to be aggressive at the start.

Shack, for the love of S'Jet... build the ADVANCED RESEARCH FACILITY ON THE MOTHERSHIP AND DO ALL UPGRADES!!! You have about 10 times more money than what is needed for all research in the game. Faster and tougher ships. Makes life easier. Also build a proper fleet. Max out on ships. Build fire control towers on the battlecruisers and hyperspace modules. Just start the next mission, pause the game, and chill out for 2 minutes and check out Every ship and its upgrades. You are missing out on core game elements, and thus missing out on half the game. A lot of ppl are suggesting this since a few missions ago.

Defense field generator. It’s a rarely used ship as it’s really not that good.
