Thanks Duluth Harbor Cam for posting this and including the ship & harbor master radio chatter. Funny to me that on 1-14-20..it's the end of the shipping season for 2019, lol.
@@beavis4play damn that's sad to hear , had hoped for better. Yes working on and around water is dangerous , I just want everyone to be able to go home alive.
George Escaped I’m in Arizona. I live near the Carefree Highway. Today we were in low ‘70s and I was on my Harley most of the day. So, I am watching this with complete awe.
Dacriz - the Bridge lifts with plenty of time for the boat to make a hard turn back to the lake. It happened a few weeks ago when the Bridge failed to lift.
@@DuluthHarborCam1 thanks for the quick reply. I knew there had to be an abort plan but I wasnt sure what that was. These ships fascinate me but my occupation of 42 years was that of a plumber. Not exactly an easy trade but it paid the bills. I envy people that enjoy their jobs. Thanks again
It takes a long time for that big a ship to stop. And yes, it has happened that a ship hit a drawbridge. In 1960, the Stockholm miscalculated and hit the Sturgeon Bay (Wisconsin) draw, knocking it out of alignment. It took 6 weeks of emergency repairs to fix.
@delonix regia go search up the Oberstar when she was the steamer Charles. M. Beeghly! She had throaty but awesome sounding Leslie 300 steam horns and Leslie A-200 air horns!
Its 80 degrees in Central Florida and I'm freezing. Never saw the likes of this...and people just standing around watching it like it's the Mummers Parade in Philly.
The Soo Locks between Lake Superior and Lake Huron freeze over, thus preventing transit to the ports on the lower lakes. As soon as they can break them out and keep them ice free (usually around early to mid March), the shipping season starts.
Most of Great Lakes shipping closes down from about 15 January thru 15 March. It's hard to negotiate the ice floes, and it gives them time to overhaul the ships for the next season.
Thank you for your replies. It seems this is an exception to navigational rules of one bast, turn to starboard, two, turn to port, three, reversing and multiple, danger.
@@deannelson9565 no. They were fleetmates not sister ships. A sister ship is a identical ship to the Fitz like the Arthur. B. Homer. The Oberstar's sisters were the John Sherwin which has been in layup for almost 40 years, the long scrapped American Fortitude (Courtney Burton and Ernest. T. Weir.) the George. M. Humphrey.
@@bluerazor7049 never said they were sister ships I said they were nearly twins of each other. Built at the exact same time with a very similar design and only about 50 ft of difference.
@@deannelson9565 oh sorry. Yeah the hull looks similar, only the pilothoise, stern deckhouse and stack are the main difference of course. Here's a fun fact: The Fitzgerald and Homer had nearly identical pilothouses to the AAA-class except the Fitz amd Homers pilothouses had a extended roof like visor which gave it the look of a sailors cap!
I bet captain wanted just one more blow for the season. Its winter work or unemployment. Some of my family sail all winter. You got to love that shit. Jerome.
