Hey everyone today I go over a full oil change with filter. This is an at home version with out all the fancy tools so you can do this. I do make a fancy drain out of aluminum flashing but you can cut a bottle or funnel to work as well. The parts we are using are
-5qts 10w-30 marine engine oil not (tcw-3)
We will not use all of it but this is what you should get.
-90601-ZE2-000 Washer Drain Oil (qty 1)
-15400-PLM-A02 Oil Filter (tall blue)(qty 1)
-12mm deep socket and ratchet
-Flat Head Screw Driver
-Funnel
-Drain Pan
-Nitrile Gloves
-Rags
That's it. So just follow along. If you have any questions just hit comments or email me at captainrobthompson@gmail.com I usually write back fairly quickly. If you like what you watched don't forget to subscribe for more Honda Tech advice and fishing North Carolina. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for the video. Helpful. I'm a outboard maintenance newbie. IBF90 info is rare. Mine is a 2017 few hundred hours. Any videos on doing some other maintenance items. ie..impeller, fuel filters

@@captainrobthompson8728 Thanks for your reply. Is there a difference between the BF90a and BF90d? My manual says 90a but you mention 90d in the vid. Thx.

Great video. I just picked up a boat with a BF90D and I have no idea what state it’s in on the inside so I’m definitely changing the oil ASAP. Any tips on what else I should do with it?

Do a compression check and look at your plugs. You want all the cylinders to be with in 10 percent of each other. Change gear oil. Take off prop and make sure no fishing line is there. Do fuel filters and the one on the boat. The fuel water separator. Check the fuel inside to make sure no water is in it. Also check the oring on the gas cap. If it's cracked replace it Grease it to. Grease all the zerk fittings and give it a shake down run. Don't run long on ear muffs in a bucket or in the water is best for the water pump. See how it goes hopefully all will be well.

Thanks for the video, started to do this on my 02 bf90a and found water in the oil 😖. Any idea on what I can trouble shoot next? I also watched your video on the gear oil and found water there as well. Thinking of calling in the pros unless it a basic to moderate job. Thoughts?

My first thought is do a compression test they all should be within 10% in psi. 2002 is near end of life if it's been in salt the whole time. Start there. The gearcase is probably seals need to be done. Let me know what the compression tests shows and get back to me. I'm leaning toward head or intake gasket. What do your plugs look like to. Rusty?

Yamalube oil in a Honda Outboard... I like you

Would you be surprised if I told you Belray supplies a lot of companies? They are all good to use unless under warranty. Then stick with manufacture. They can't deni you on that. I work at a Yamaha dealer now too. Lol!!!

@@captainrobthompson8728 They can't deny warranty with any oil, provided it meets manufacturer specs. Not a thing special about factory oils, on water or land. Long as it meets the manufacturer specs, correct viscosity, then roll on.
@captainrobthompson8728
@captainrobthompson8728 4 года назад
@@Resistculturaldecline actually they can. I've had company tech reps deni claims for exactly that. It was a while ago but why put merc oil in a brand new Honda? Technically if you have your maintenance 20 hour and hundred hour services done by a dealer for that type motor you would have the correct oil. I've seen Suzuki deni a gear case warranty with not enough oil with less than 20 hours and they filled it at the factory. They always look for a way out.

@@captainrobthompson8728 Not if the customer defends themselves. First off, obviously using manufacturer branded oil isn't difficult, so no real reason to start a spat with the dealer to begin with. But, an engine maker don't make their own oil. It's contracted out just to meet minimum requirements. For example a Honda dealership will use whatever bulk oil is most affordable available, be it Castrol, Pennzoil, Mobil, etc. It's Honda (Mobil) from the factory, Suzuki is Motul, etc. 150k miles of dealer oil changes was probably a handful of different oil brands along the way. They will use branded filters, but they don't make them. Which in Honda's case is Fram or Filtech, Toyota is Denso, etc. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits such claims being denied long as the product used by the consumer meets spec. To demand the consumer use a particular branded part for the warranty to be honored is called a " tie-in sale" and is prohibited by law.

@@Resistculturaldecline yep. I know they don't make their own oil. In the mid 2000s Castrol made Honda. Honda had issues with the thrust washer coming out they said in commercial vessels use yamalube. Because it was a "better grade". If you stick to their guidelines it's a less bumpy ride. I've seen some customers call everyday and get action because the sqeeky wheel gets the grease. But if you use tech2000 Wal-Mart oil and it's in the boat and it says meets and exceeds manufactures recommendations your if the rep finds it you've got a long battle ahead. It's just easier and costs the same to use their oil and get your services done until the original manufacture warranty is up. Why buck the tide then fight the system? Then it's more down time more phone calls more money. Why? Use what ever oil you want in my video I'm sticking to it. I would look foolish to make a video and say its under warranty still but use anybody's oil as long as it's a good oil. I've just opened myself right there for hate mail. If you want to make a video about the Magnusson-Moss Act go for it. I'll actually bring it up to the rep next week and I'll see what he says and I'll come back and comment.

Is this the same procedure as the Honda bf100 outboards because I have heard they are the same weight and block as the 75hp and 90hp honda

I believe so. We never had the 100 here. If it's close to the same age I would bet money on it that it's the same.
