thanks for the video. I have a 93 ACTY on the way to hawaii 23,000km . I was going to change the belt / pump /etc like you did since rubber degrades. looks very do-able for a guy with no lift and simple tools
@rhd_ron
@rhd_ron Год назад
Yes it is doable with no lift. I can say it's a pretty tough job just removing the timing belt covers. The leaf spring gets in the way. Other than that, pretty standard Honda timing belt replacement.
@nunyabusiness896
@nunyabusiness896 11 месяцев назад
Let us know how your timing belt looked when you took it off. Always curious to get data on old age/low mileage belts. I know 15 year old belts are typically pretty good looking and 20 year tend to get iffy, but both usually have substantial mileage behind them. I'm in the camp that there's no need to risk messing something up when it's running well if it's not really needed. One loose screw or a timing belt tooth off will be a lot worse than running a perfectly fine belt a few more years, so I try to not take that risk until the risk of imminent failure is worse.

@rhd_ron

Yeah when I did mine I marked the tension bolt with a sharpie to put the new one back in the same spot. There is a deflection guide but I don't have it available. I've done many many Honda belts, I kind of just know how much slack they need. Doesn't help others though, sorry about that.

Ron! Your the man! Glad you took time to do this! Really a great help. Can you show how to get to the crankshaft seals and cam seal? I have a lot of miles on mine and wanted to replace. Also what sealant do you recommend for the valve cover corners? Thanks man!
@rhd_ron
@rhd_ron 2 года назад
Thanks Curtis! Glad to help. I use Permatex Ultra Grey from the parts store, or Honda Bond if you can get it from the dealer. Crank and cam seals are right behind the crank gear/cam gear. Holding that crank still while busting the bolt loose is tough. Honda makes a special tool but not sure if it’s available in the States.

Great video! One thing I noticed was that there was no mention of how you determined how much tension to put on the tensioner.
@rhd_ron
@rhd_ron 2 года назад
Yes good observation. There is a procedure with the use of a deflection gauge in the book. I try to mark the location of the bolt on the tensioner and go back to that same spot. Ive done TONS of Honda/Acura tbelts, I take for granted my “mechanics feel” for the right amount of tension. Lol.

I've heard that the bleeder port under the bed is impossible to get to, I would appreciate a video on a coolant fluid flush. I have not heard mention of people changing the coolant thermostat valve, your thoughts?
@rhd_ron
@rhd_ron 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback Chris! Yes, I'll see what I can muster up for a coolant flush video. I actually flushed and vented that trucks system from just the bleed screws on the Intake Manifold and jacking the truck WAY up in the front to make the radiator the high point. If I would have had a thermostat with me I would have changed it with the pump. It's on the backside of the water pump housing and I could see it with the pump off. Take care!

This is a fantastic video. My '98 has a whine now after replacing the belt + waterpump + tensioner. Did I over tighten it? Should I just run it?
@rhd_ron

Could very well be too tight of a belt. Make sure you have some deflection. Thats why I mark the tension idler bolt to know approximately where to put it back for tightening purposes.

Hey Ron! Great vid on T/belt replacement, I’m doing mine right now. Question, with the belt off, can the crankshaft spin independent to get the timing correct? Thanks and looking forward to your answer.
@rhd_ron
@rhd_ron 2 года назад
Yes, you will be able to move the crank to align timing marks with the belt off. Align the timing at the crank, and the two marks on the cam gear with the head, then go back with the belt. It will take you several iterations to get it right. Always check with full revolution of the crank and cam gears that everything comes back to where you started. Thanks!

You have to lift the valve cover to get that upper timing belt cover off unfortunately. Makes the job that much "Bigger" because you then need to apply sealant on the corners of the valve cover gasket where it goes over the cam.

@rhd_ron
@rhd_ron 9 месяцев назад
Dont stress! You need to slowly and methodically move the cam gear a bit to get the valves in a different closed position. Then you will be able to turn the crank back into position. Move the cam, move the crank until you get the crank lined back up. Then set your cam again. It’s not moving because you are getting piston to valve interference. Be careful.
