The FortNine videos are nothing short of amazing. Ryan and team have more than done their homework on every video they produce. I own the 2017 manual one. I ride it mainly on road in the apennines. So, TWISTIES! I find no difficulty in keeping up with other bikes, even sports bikes. It glides over road imperfections, and that's a big advantage over more 'road' oriented bikes, considering the roads in the mountains are shit anyway. It dives? Yes. But i'm 75kgs with gear, and the suspension setting is good enough.

People give the DCT such a hard time. I have a Honda NC750x DCT and I love it. I can ride a manual but since I have arthritis and damage to my left ankle I decided to get a DCT so I could get more quality time riding without hurting after a long ride. Some people think DCT riders are lazy but some of us have physical issues that make the DCT a more logical choice. I don't care what people ride, I just want them to go out, be safe and have fun!

On the Africa Twin, the 43 deg handlebar turn is a unique feature. Thanks for demonstrating the U-turn from a stop. I've seen many smaller dual sport riders do it, but seeing how easily it can be done on the AT is awesome. DCT owners have it easy, not having to worry about clutch control in these maneuvers. It would also come in handy during Motogymkhana competitions. Without skidding the rear, the minimum turning radius for the AT is 8.5 ft. Try that on a Euro ADV bike.

Excellent video, Ryan. One thing I will say is, it's not that bad on the pavement. All your criticism of the on-road and on-highway handling is true but for someone who is not an aggressive rider, the Africa Twin does fine on the pavement and highway. Not all of us want to ride at 160kph and get our bikes impounded by the police. For reasonable speeds on the highway, it does just fine. It falls short on the twisties with the front end being a little vague, but even there, one has to push it to feel those limitations. The weak front brakes, however, you can feel right away. Great review and video!

absolutely amazing review! I gotta hand it to you, Ryan, you're kind of like the top gear of the motorcycle world (that's high praise coming from me). if I might make one suggestion, though; I really enjoy the nature shots, but I sometimes feel like the excessive pauses somewhat kill the momentum of the video. maybe a little more background narrative happening during those scenes, and making the scenic shots a little shorter in length would add some depth to the videos. otherwise, the delivery is flawless. keep up the good work!

Great review. I find the brakes on my DCT bike to be awesome, especially coming from a KLR650. I wonder if braided lines would help the initial feel? Also on the DCT starting procedure. Cool review :) Well filmed and produced! Not sure I agree that the Africa Twin is better than the KTM 1190R though, I've ridden both for quite some time, and the KTM feels way more lively on the street, and similarly dirt-bike-esque off road. For off road use I also found the KTM hydraulic clutch to be considerably lighter and easier to modulate than the Africa Twin's clutch, which I honestly disliked enough to recommend anyone thinking of an Africa Twin to go for the DCT version. Best of all worlds - the new 1290R, with quick shifter for clutchless up and down shifts, and a Rekluse for those long gnarly rides. Could well be the perfect monster enduro!
@GerhardCombrink
@GerhardCombrink 7 лет назад
Viking84 The 1190r would have been the perfect weekday commute weekend off road explorer if it wasn't for the excessive and very annoying heat issue during warmer climate lane splitting commutes. Mine becomes pretty much useless during mid-summer. Considered trading it in on an Africa twin or f800gsa for only this reason but the f800 is in dire need of a real update (speed control, LED headlights please) and the Africa twin dct costs almost the same as the new 1290r will be where I stay. However, been burned by a KTM and learned my lesson.
@texnorthman
@texnorthman 7 лет назад
I have read a lot about that heat issue - does not sound very nice! Here in Norway we are generally thankful for any heat we can get, so it was not noticeable when I tested one :) Lets hope KTM have sorted out the heat and airbox issues from the 1190R for the new 1290's - I think I will be putting down some cash for one for 2017!

Great review overall. As an owner of a 2019 Africa Twin, I will agree and disagree with a couple points. Agree - 1.) it should come with a center stand and better handguards from the factory. 2.) The front suspension is soft on the road when riding aggressively. 3.) It feels like a big dirt bike off-road 4.) It should offer better wind protection from the factory Disagree - keep in mind some of this changed with the newer models- 1.) Even with the soft suspension, it is a blast in the twisties and I didn't notice it being hard to turn in. 2.) The front brakes don't feel squishy to me at all. 3.) I think the 94 hp feels like plenty on the highway. I accelerate to 80mph in the blink of an eye on backroads and constantly find myself saying oops I'm going too fast. It has zero issues cruising at 100mph on the highway, it only gets a little shaky around 115-120mph. Other comments - the crash protection is not as much of a big deal to me. I'd rather save the money and just buy that stuff aftermarket anyways. I find the aftermarket has that stuff sorted out better anyways. I bought my 19 as a leftover for 10,400 out the door. With the money I saved over it's competition, I was able to buy crash bars, panniers, Bark Busters, better tires, a center stand, a charging cord and phone mount, and additional driving lights. I absolutely love this bike and hope to have it for the rest of my life

I agree with all your points. Most of the issues of the older models are fixed in the 2022 version so far as I can tell. I prefer the Adventure Sport since I don't offroad much.

I was planning on getting it soon, but now I'm kind of not sure that it would be suitable for me because 90% percent of my riding is going to be on tarmac. Still, I'm talking about bumpy and uneven country back roads. So I still need a bike with long travel suspension to soak up all the road abnormalities. Do you think the African Twin could still work for me? If not, what other options do you recommend? Amazing review by the way.

Hello! Sorry for the late response - been away from my computer for a while. I think you could definitely do better than the AT for your purposes. Take a look at the V-Strom 1000 for a 90/10 split. There's also the Kawasaki Versys (even more road-oriented) and the Ducati Multistrada if you're looking to burn some cash. ~RyanF9

Izat - Go with what your heart tells you. The Africa Twin is an incredibly capable bike and the margins of what make a good bike or great bike on road are very small these days. It's not like the difference between a XL650L and a CB500X for instance. I can keep up with many sports bikes on most twisties on my Africa Twin (the one in the video). You won't be disappointed in the Africa Twin, it has won bike of the year in quite a few renowned publications.

So this guy & his chums can pull off a video review which can stand nose to nose with any Jeremy Clarkson & Top Gear show for both script & production, for a slither of the cost. Now that is what I call bloody impressive. If it was a bike it would drive into your bedroom & offer you felatio each & every morning, its is that smooth & that satisfying.

That ... Was fantastic! Great camera work, drone footage was cool. Awesome location too but the best part was your delivery and the script with some jokes in there to lighten up a serious storyline. ADV bikes are super popular and overtaking all other bikes in the sales department - at least here in Europe. When I first saw the new Africa twin I wanted one! Although it had to be white, blue and red, the black and silver does nothing to liven up the bike and it just looks dull in my opinion. It was that or a KTM 1190. Long story short I ended up buying my KTM 1190 R because oh my dog, the power! That and the fact it can handle being loaded up and driven 1000 miles down to the middle of nowhere.. to then spend 1000 miles off road and I come back home again with the biggest grin afterwards! Again though, awesome film bud!

Great vid as always and cant believe I missed it! I took out the 2020 model today and thought it was outstanding, best ride of any adventure bike I've ridden so far. The only thing is the tech. They've added a whole host however havent really done so in an intuitive way, tons of buttons, tons of confusion. I feel they are stepping closer to perfection though and I feel they will be the first manufacturer to do so in the adv market

I love watching your video's, I definitely feel your way too good for You-Tube. I currently have a 2006 BMW R1200gs but am thinking about the new AT adventure. Stiffer suspension, but still 95hp seems a little tired on the asphalt. I like to have the POWER to pass when needed. I noticed that it appear that you ride a Suzuki Versus 1000. Why did you chose that bike? Hate to ask you, but what bike would you consider the best for the price? BMW R1200GS, KTM 1290 R, or Honda Africa Twin adventure. Why does Honda and KTM both use chains?? We just return back from a ride up north to Jasper and Banff to Glacier national park, I must say Canadians are super friendly. Your definitely have a gift in front of the camera, and I love the drone work you add to your videos. Much appreciated!
@FortNine
@FortNine 6 лет назад
Hey Aaron! I had a V-Strom 1000, which is an incredible bike for the price. Hands down, the best value in the ADV market is the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and Honda Africa Twin. Fortunately they're very different, so the decision is easy. Get the AT if you plan to ride trails and more advanced off-road. Get the V-Strom otherwise. As for chain drive, it makes sense on an ADV bike for a few reasons. 1 - it's very lightweight. 2 - you can easily change sprockets to change ratios (a lot of off-roaders go up a few teeth in the rear for more grunt) and 3 - it's easy to repair on the trailside. Chains are also super cheap and less lossy than shafts, so manufacturers like 'em. ~RF9

I doubt it! The ABS can't be turned off on the front wheel, and it does a stellar job of preventing lock-up off-road. I'm sure it could handle a little extra bite. ~RyanF9

I test rode the Africa twin dct version and hated it, the dct and suspension travel combined gave an unsettling feeling in corners; it always seemed to drop a gear just after you settled into a corner which destabilizing the bike and left you worrying about the bike instead of your exit from the corner.
@rsalvatores

So I was thinking of the Twin as my first ADV for me but obviously you do not recommend it as such... what would you recommend is your best all rounder? V-Strom? super Tenere? F800?
@FortNine
@FortNine 8 лет назад
Best all-rounder would be the Super Ten (but beware the weight), or if you have the cash, a KTM 1190. Take the Strom for pavement duty and gravel roads. You can also whip the Strom around gnarly terrain, provided you already have some off-road experience. If you're going to ride primarily on dirt, the Africa Twin is your best bet. It's also the easiest machine to *learn* off-road skills on, especially the DCT version. The F800GS is great for new riders and off-road enthusiasts, too. One interesting choice might be the new V-Strom 650XT. It's a good all-around ADV bike, but the lighter weight and lower power is a benefit for new ADV riders. ~RyanF9

Your video is impressive and very well put together! I have been looking for a DRZ400SM (with a all terrain tire) until today. I sat on the Africa Twin and it fit me much better. I want to do 80% on road daily driver and 20% off road trails. My background is a 1984 XL350R that my wife owns that I am very ginger with off road and like to drive on road. You are experienced and I am not. I want the manual (which the salesman did not tell me was an option) and am just wondering with what I have given you with experience and what I want to do, if you think that it is the bike for me. Oh and I am 6 foot even and 250lbs for the last bit of info on me. Any info you give me would be good. I own a 2007 Dyna Wide Glide for comparison on my skill level and weight of bike I can handle. But I am ready to own a more versatile bike.
@FortNine
@FortNine 8 лет назад
Hello! Personally, I would take a look at the V-Strom 1000 first. It's cheaper than the Africa Twin, and offers *way better* on-road ability. Plus it's much comfier for long distance riding. The Strom will struggle on the dirt, but with a good pair of tires and some aftermarket protection (skid plate, engine bars, etc.) I find that it will go almost anywhere. What does your 20% of off-road trails look like? If you're into really gnarly stuff, the AT will be a better fit. Also might be worth checking out the Yamaha Super Tenere. If the Strom is great on pavement, and the AT is great on dirt... the Super Ten is somewhere in between. Anyway, congrats on getting into ADV riding! ~RyanF9

Hey Andrew! Two noticeable differences. The fuel range on the BMW is *way* better. But the Africa Twin is a better "on-road" motorcycle. Not in terms of handling - they're pretty much equal on and off-road. But the Honda has a good engine while the BMW feels old and tired (unsurprisingly, since the engine is almost 10 years old). ~RyanF9
