5- Loosen the electric harnes
6- Remove 3 rubber hoses from plastic box one at the back and 2 underneath on both sides
7- lift of plastic box
8- Turn flywheel so the markers match, make some colour marks if needed
9- Loosen flywheel nut with 23 mm socket counterclockwise
10- put some preasure on the flywheel and give it a gentle smack and lift it off
11- Remowe 3 screws from electric stator and 1 from the cable harnes and lay it aside
12- Gentle remove the timing belt without turning the cam or crankshaft out of line on the marker
13- Put on the timing belt on the small sprocket on the crankshaft first check markers you´ve made so the match
14- On the big sprocket just put on the timing belt 4-5 mm and when you have it all the way round push it down
15- check markers if you made some
16- Assembly the electric stator with 3 screws and the harnes and small plate with 1 screw
17- Assembly the flywheel , put on some locktite 242 if you have to secure the nut
18- Assembly plastic box with electric harnes and the 3 rubber hoses
19- Slide on recoil starter and tighten with 3 screws
20- Put back the wire ontop of starter
21- Put back engine cover
22- Carefully rotate the motor to check so the valves dont touch the pistons
23- Put on water so you dont burn your impeller and start the engine
This was the first time i did this on my outboard engine and it did not take more then 35 minutes
so it´s not so difficult if you just follow the steps above

thank you , i couldn´t find any tutorial on the honda 20 hp so when i did the timing belt job it was a small thing to let the camera roll . if it can help one person it was worth the extra time .

Hello nice video. I have a honda BF20 and have a question about an other subject of this motor. The charge coil of this motor is in the Stator. Can you tell me how many wires are on the rectifier of your honda. I suggest there are more then 5 wires on retifier because of the charging coil in de Stator. If there isnt a Stator below flywheel, i suggest there is een 4 wired rectifier. Am i True? Thks alex from the Netherlands

Great video thanks. What is the tool called you used to pop off the fly wheel and which size? Thanks.

I think they call them brake drum puller , just measure the diameter of your flywheel on the teeth , i can say thar every hobby mechanic in your neighbourhood might have one if they are into some car buisiness so you can pop it of if you show them this movie

Great video. Thanks for showing that it wasn't that hard of a repair. I lined up both flywheel and timing gear arrows like you show. My outboard runs great at high speeds, however it has a rough idle while in neutral. Do you have a video on checking the timing?
@mavicrider803
@mavicrider803 Год назад
Sorry can`t help you out there , that`s not a problem that i have been out for. if you set the markers like you say you have there should not be a timing issue? if the engine was working ok before the belt shift you must have got the belt one tooth wrong somewhere ? then my only advice is that you check the markers again to realy be sure it´s right , regards Peter

Good explanation, have 2 more questions. what kind of hammer do you use and after how many hours / year should the belt be replaced? Have a Honda BF 30D of which the nut under the flywheel has vibrated loose. I hope the flywheel comes off as easily as in your video. Thanks
@mavicrider803
@mavicrider803 4 года назад
The hammer i used is a plastic hammer , if you just put some pressure on the flywheel it should pop of as easily as mine did , i don't realy know how often you should change the timing belt , mine was 10 years + so i did it to be safe , but if you follow factory standard they probably do it more often then that , but if you do it every 5-7 years you should probably be safe /Peter

Awesome video brother!! I just acquired a very low hours 2014, 4-strk Suzuki 20hp EFI (DF20A). Previous owner never had any maintenance done to it, so I did all the basic stuff: oils filters, sparkplug, impeller, in addition to thermostat, anodes, and re-greasing all the fittings/linkages. I also removed the recoil starter assembly to inspect the timing belt and while it looks almost new, I worry about it because the shop/maintenance manual calls for replacing belts ever 4yrs regardless of hours. I fear I dont have any experience removing flywheels and setting timing on small outboards, so I'm hesitant to do this service myself, but unfortunately I dont have a Suzuki dealer anywhere near me. Just watched this and I think it gave the confidence to do it on my outboard. Is belt replacement a must or can it be left on until actual signs of belt wear are evident? Thanks in advance, cheers!!

Hi , you can`t see anny wear on the belt unless you remove it from the motor . it`s suppose to bend round the pulleys so they reinforce the timing belt to do so in one direction, if you see any wear on it you should not start the engine at all. when the belt is removed and you turn it inside out and bend it then if it`s dried or overdue you can see cracks on it. but never ever put it back after removal becuase it looks fine , just replace it . on my honda the timing belt was never replaced and that one was from 2007 i think , i didn`t see any wear on it but don`t take that as an answer . but at least change it now so you can be sure of that you don`t rip it of and crash the valves and the rest of your motor , it`s a cheap investment to replace it , regards Peter

@@mavicrider803 Hi Peter, thanks for your response. I have the belt already, but am hesitant to attempt myself as the manual calls for some special tooling to hold the flywheel in place, while using yet another special tool to remove the nut holding the flywheel. You made your flywheel removal look extremely easy. Do you think its possible to do the same on my Suzuki- just use an automotive flywheel puller to exert a bit of pressure then give it a nudge? I think if I can somehow replicate what you did on yours, I should be fine. Rudy-

@@CUBICHI1985 you don`t have to put so much preasure on the flywheel , then it`s just to give it a gentle smack and it will probably pop off,

@mavicrider803
@mavicrider803 4 года назад
I bought this motor from a friend and he has used it a lot , and i know this is the first time it´s replaced becuase he bought it brand new . And the timing belt showed no wear or other cracks but i thought it was time when the motor was 10 years and it has never been changed . But if you follow the service procedure i think they are supposed to be changed more often , but mine was fine. but with that less of effort and little money spent i would say every 5 year then you are very safe / Peter

Hi. I didn't see too good the sign fom the crankshaft. I've seen it on the flyweel but after you Take it off.. It was the White marker only?
@mavicrider803
@mavicrider803 2 года назад
Hi , The white markers was made by me just to have extra checkmarkers on the flywheel so i could make a double check when it was assembled again, so the only markers i found original is on the camshaft and is the arrows pointing at each other, the flywheel didn´t have any that i could find so before you take away the flywheel make some extra marker just for yourself / regards Peter

@mavicrider803
@mavicrider803 Год назад
I don´t really know exactly but my motor is from 2007 and this was the first time the belt was changed. i could not see any wear on it but i should say at least with 6-7 years between the changes and your safe , but dont take my word for it , i bought this boat and motor from a friend and he didn´t do it so i made it to be safe , it´s no big money and the job was really easy so better switch the belt so you don´t ruin your enginge regards Peter
