A trick I learned on Honda's is that when the belt breaks and bends valves you can replace the belt , restart the engine, get it up to temp, and then rev the piss out of it. The valve stems are small enough that they'll straighten out and seal again. Doesn't always work. But, will work about 75% of the time. Beats the heck out of pulling heads.

These were the best outboards ever offered to the public. As any 2-stroke though, if it's not running correctly, don't keep running it anyway. The reason is, fuel carries the lubricant throughout the engine and it's quite common for carburetors to corrode internally. This results in starvation of lubricant.

A trick I was shown was to cut the TB along its length then remove one half. Fit the new belt over the sprockets and push the remainig half of the old belt off. The old belt can then be cut and removed.
@MEGA_SOKO
@MEGA_SOKO 3 года назад
While this is a neat idea, what happens if the old belt breaks after you half it lengthwise? Then you have a motor out of time because the tensioner will make the belt pull in different directions when it snaps (pressure is released from the cam pulleys, possibly pulling in opposite directions), taking your engine out of time. :( if you have to go 90% into the motor to replace it, may as well do it once the right way. Just my opinion. I would think I would be a lot more nervous taking that chance that it's the ONE day that the belt does break.
@followthewhiterabbit7504
@followthewhiterabbit7504 3 года назад
@@MEGA_SOKO Agreed! That is a risk you take. But if the old belt does break, you're no worse off than if you took it off entirely in the first place. You just proceed to install the new one as per the manual. This is just a trick that if it works, can save you time.

@mattc677
@mattc677 3 года назад
Outboard owners with timing belts: Timing belts stretch and the engine runs with less volumetric efficiency when they do. That's a fact that any truly experienced mechanic will be familiar with. After many heat-up and cool down cycles, combined with normal friction, the rubberized coating of a timing belt can crack and the underlying webbing can also become stressed and brittle and, therefore, timing belts are prone to breaking. After normal wear the teeth on a timing belt become worn and belts are prone to slip or jump. All of this can happen during normal running but it is quite common for them to break or jump: during a back fire; propeller strike; high rev condition on start-up etc. If you have an interference engine (check with the engine manufacturer for a list) a broken belt will almost certainly result in a severely damaged engine. In some cases the bearings for the tensioner and idler pulleys that the belt runs on can become worn enough that they fail or wobble enough to allow the belt to fly off with the same unfortunate result as belt breakage. Changing a timing belt correctly is in most cases beyond the skill set of the average mariner. A mistake during this sort of job is very common for the untrained dabbler and it can result in a ruined engine, so go ahead and have the timing belt of your outboard motor changed according to the interval recommended by the manufacturer. They are the people who designed the engine. Do you think some guy on the internet knows more than they do?

@@motorv8N yes you can get around it by having either low valve lift or as you said, dished pistons. Neither of these things are good for making power though, so if you're really worried about timing belt breakage, maybe just buy a 2 stroke

Just do the maintenance, or buy an outboard with a timing chain.

Pretty easy, unbolt a few things, take some photos, follow some instructions and take your your time. People panic as they are removing things and worry that they can't get them back on, this is actually a pretty basic maintenance item.

What belt does a Evinrude 150 E-tech 1st have? I know it doesn't have a timing belt.

I cant wait to repower my boat. I hate 2 strokes, and carbs, or more so the maintenance with carbs give me a 4 stroke anyday of the week!

I never have been able to understand why any engineer would design any engine to be an interference engine. It’s about like filling your tires with gasoline. If you have a flat there’s about a 90% chance your car goes up in flames. Maybe it’s just me but a little common since goes a long way.

Are there rebuild kits for every older engine, to make it just like this one?

Can you upgrade to an oil based tensioner and the other cool improvements you mentiined like a belt with timing marks printed on it, on older engines?

Do you have move any belts when changing the flywheels on the Yamaha 350?
@BornAgainBoating

Nope, just pull the bolts and change it out. Then reset the rotor record on the computer:)

Not to mention 133 amp stator, 50 amps dedicated to charging and 83 amps for engine needs, electronics etc… Apx 100 engine parts LESS than a 4 stroke = less weight. Direct fuel injection and separate oil injection burning the oil completely in the stratified chamber in the head, with no oil by products going into the water, translation and fact- it burns CLEANER THAN A 4 stroke..proven by marine testing standards, C.A.R.B certified and E.U certified. N.A.S.A alloy cylinders specially honed and requiring no engine break in, 500 engine hours before requiring first dealer services. More torque, better mpg even if by just a little in some cases, internal steering, no cables, clean rigging freeing up transom clutter. Gear-case sealed tight with a reservoir with room for temperature expansion and has extra lube in case a leak develops. Easy to check before each outing by removing side cowling and looking at reservoirs clarity and level. Unfortunately this great engine will be no more, due to piss poor management and events. 2 strokes of this kind are the future, too many hide the truths evinrude plainly exhibited with testing. Almost seems conspired against in many ways. Technically proven it was greener than four strokes, plus no changing oil (think waste oil-not green). Well thought I’d elaborate in case some were confused about 2 strokes, namely an Evinrude.

I have a 2002 225 hp yamaha four stroke. Starts up runs good, runs up to 4300-4400 rpm then drops rpm if I push the throttle above. Anyone have any ideas what that could be?
