Honda BF2.3 outboard motor review

First and foremost I loved making this video. Even though now "06/14/2020" I currently own a Tohatsu 6hp and no longer have the Honda I can say it was a great little motor. It is by no means a fast motor but it gets the job when you just want to troll around the lake or river at a leisurely pace. Keep in mind that if you're looking to go faster and higher hp outboard is needed. Thank you for watching and be safe in the water.

I live on a little houseboat and I row all over the place. Some neighbors gave me they're 2.3 Honda motor. They plan on getting a bigger one for their inflatable dinghy. God bless them, this will save me a lot of back pain. And the time. I enjoyed your video and it was encouraging. Thanks!

Hi Erick, I just wanted to say that your video is one of the most comprehensive I've seen on this little outboard motor. I just finished doing a short service on this model for a friend who had left it in his shed for the last 3 years. After a carb clean/oil change and new spark plug it's now running like new, absolutely bulletproof little motor. Thumbs up from Northern Ireland 🇬🇧 ATB... Billy.

@@ErickMartinSucredo you have to run it to break in the motor or can you just fill up gas and go fishing with out breaking it in ????

You can, you just can't go full throttle. Run it at half throttle for the first 10 hours and you'll be ok.

@@ErickMartinSucre I'm definitely getting me one of these once I save up enough. I'm not interested in speed. Reliability and fuel economy is where it's at. I'm putting one on a Bic Sportyak 245 for inshore fishing trips. That's 51 kilo's weight with the engine weighing 13kg, a set of transom wheels and I can pull my boat to the ocean and back home again. I'm poor so avoiding mooring costs lol.

I got one of these things with my Twin Troller and I'll say it's a cute little thing. Then I got to the point of adding oil to the engine. You'd think a simple funnel would do but hell no...you have to have a funnel with a bendable neck. In short, it took me 45 minutes to get the right amount of oil into the thing with a lot of spillage for all of my efforts. I also read my simple directions and could find no comment in the book about the motor coming with gear oil in the lower unit and I need to check that before I try to run the friggin thing. Also, it's air cooled so from what I can tell there is not a water pee-hole like you see on most outboards. This motor has nothing but undignified reviews on Amazon and I hope that mine is an exception.
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 4 года назад
It does come with gear oil. It is reliable but I ended up getting a 6hp Tohatsu and a 9.9 Merc. My main issue was the plastic propeller. The shear pin has a tendency to bend or break.

Great review! I have a 2.3 on my 1970 12ft. V-Bow Grumman aluminum Jon boat. Get 6.5 mph with the tide or current and 4.5 against. Love it being air-cooled. Reverse is pretty gnarly too. I got it for some work I did for a buddy who had it on his dinghy. All I had to do is rebuild the carburetor and it starts first time every pull Unless I run out of gas. Then it takes two or three. A great little outboard in my opinion. I call it my putt putt.

You did a great job with that video except for the water part. I have 3 outboards. They are all old. Besides the 93 Honda 2hp, I have a 50 horse Evinrude and a 15 horse Johnson. Erick I just wanted to say when you shut off the fuel to run the engine dry, after the engine stops, choke the carburetor and then try to start it again, it might run a bit more to get all the fuel out of the carburetor, for long time storage, a marine mechanic told me that thanks good video
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, been doing that since I got my 6hp Tohatsu, and my 12hp Hangkai. I remove the fuel line and allow the engine to burn the gas in the carb. Makes it easier for transport and storage.

Frank Mayer , Make sure to consider an extension throttle so you can sit in the middle of your TT. I have a TT also and the seats make it ackward (because you are sitting high) to steer the TT with your hand behind your back. The throttle will also hit the back of your seat, so you have to find the correct position to steer freely. I hated the struggle at first but I got use to it.

I am heading out on the water today and just got this motor. I also have a TT and have been using a Lehr propane 2.5. It's an ok little motor but I am always smelling propane and now it is leaking oil. So I will keep it stowed away for now... can't wait to try this Honda motor out today... also the Lehr doesn't have much torque. we will see...

Hey, very well-done and informative review! Thanks. What about shat length? It was sold to me as both/either 15” or 20” (configurable for either length). Is that true?
@ErickMartinSucre

To the best of my understanding you can buy it either 15 or 20. You'll want 15 inch for your average vessel. 20 for sail boats and things like that

Hey thank you for this very well done review. Helps me with my choice. I had a merc 3, it was a comparable engine. It had troubles with the carb like I needed to get the shop to clean it to prevent stalling every season because the ports are just so tiny. I tried to clean it my self but it was too small, the shop uses a vibratory cleaner. Any feedback as time has passed?

I always run the motor dry of gasoline. I unplug the fuel line and let the engine use up all the gasoline in the carb. Helps prevent gum up

I actually sold the BF2.3 mainly because I needed something faster. I purchased a Tohatsu 6hp outboard and I am very happy with it. Apparently Tohatsu is the one that makes the outboards below 50hp for both Nissan and Mariner.

You mentioned the engine was loud since it is air cooled. Is there any everyday item you could compare it to volume wise? I am considering it as a kicker motor on my boat for trolling but if its too loud i will not want to listen to it for 2-3 hours! From 5 feet away from the engine could 2 people have a conversation at a normal volume?
