This video demonstrates how i replaced my front brake pads and cleaned the caliper and pistons. The pads were genuine Honda parts i paid £50, i could have got cheaper but decided on OEM.
Tools needed are 14mm socket, 5mm Allen key, thread -lock, cleaning brushes.

Honda recommend you buy 4 new caliper bolts as they are a 1 of use. I spoke to a Honda dealer they recommended using medium strength loctite (Blue one) and the same bolts. Torque for the 14mm caliper bolts is 33 Foot Pounds (Not Newton Meters) for the 5mm Hex pins 11 Foot Pounds the manual also states the 5mm pins there is a small rubber gromet this needs to be lubed with a grease or Vaseline, I used Lithium base grease on mine. Also be aware that if you are doing them that the fluid has to go somewhere when you compress the pistons make sure the reservior can handle the excess fluid. My mech friend told me to use a tissue to soak some fluid out of it prior to compressing the pistons them put the top back on but protect your paint with a good thick towel and have water on hand just in case. (The tissue works really well but again be careful) I do not recomment depressing the brake leaver to get the pistons out to clean one false move and your in a world of F*ckups.

Hi - Call me cynical, but i think dealers would take all our money if they could. I prefer to re-use items if possible and bolts are fine i think. Agreed, blue loctite is best for removable bolts :).

The piston with the least "drag" (by the seals) will come out first. stick a tool over the entire length of the caliper to prevent the pistons from falling out. I lubricate the pistons with teflon spray by the way, it leaves a small residue which will make cleaning the next time a lot easier.

@schr4nz just found the answer to my question, without shims, a high temp lube or antisqueel spray is a must have

i bought a silikone lubricant from halfords as it is good for rubber, i hope it is good for this purpose.

HI mate - maybe you might know this - my front wheel doesnt spin freely and it appears the brakes are to tight against the disk, is there a way to loosen that so the wheel spins again?

@@KevKam thanks! And what is best lubricant ? Can’t find a water one ? Thanks again !

you should really use break cleaner and not soapy water....he used water so now he has to dry everything completly or he is going to have rusting problems along with sticking sliders....use kerosene based lubricants such as WD-40 ..kerosene based lubes will not harm the rubber boots. In addition water based lubes turn to powder when it evaporates...I wouldn't use this video as a how to...not very safe

The RED loctite, the color of the fluid not the bottle, is a PERMANENT Loctite and should only be used on components that you are not planning to remove. The BLUE loctite, the fluid, is removable loctite, one of the names it is given is "Thread 'n lock" as it is placed onto the threads of the screw or bolt and then screwed together. It will harden up after awhile and prevent the bolt or screw from coming apart from vibration. So fail on u for using RED. why not just use brake fluid to lube ?

Hi there, I got a 2019 CB1000r and want to remove rear axle in order to get caliper bracket out (the silver colored aluminum piece that looks like an axe) so I can get it powder coated. I thought by removing the middle large bolt with a 19mm hex bit would do it but I am stuck ! Do you have an idea ?

Hi, sounds like a nice mod for the CB. Sorry I’ve never done that job, wish I had better advice for you. Cheers.

No worries 😉 thanks for this cool video. Yep 👍 trying to get some parts powder coated cause looks like it has many aluminum parts that are not well finished 😉

I got some cheap pads off ebay and they don't appear to have a shim on the back of the pad... looks like I'm going to have to shop around a bit more for that. Anyway, that aside, in your experience do you need to apply any kind of anti-squeak spray or high temperature lube on the back of the pad?
@tomashton5117
@tomashton5117 4 года назад
Firstly why on earth are you buying cheap brake pads... Don't you want to be able to stop! Just a little copper grease on rear of pa eliminates any brake squeal.

got a honda cbr 1000cc rr6 and can't get the pad pins free, keep breaking hex bits and bending Allen keys any advise?
@KevKam
@KevKam 8 лет назад
Damn, that's a bit tricky. There are several things to try. Firstly i would soak them in WD40 and get some stronger Allen keys. Try this link, has some useful info, apparently boiling the caliper worked. :O www.fireblades.org/forums/general-discussion/84209-caliper-pad-retaining-pins.html
