Which brake on your bike is safer to use - front or rear? A lot of new riders intuitively tend to use rear brake more than front, because they think it’s safer. Why is that so - let’s discuss in this video. We’ll talk about braking on a straight line, braking in curve, combined braking, braking with front and rear brake separately, with and without ABS, etc. And most importantly - we’ll discuss the most common mistakes with front and rear brake, see how they play out and how to avoid them. This is pretty important video especially for new riders, so don’t forget to put a like right now and hit the subscribe button. Let’s go!

On Moto Control channel you will find videos about motorcycles, motorcycle riding techniques, tips & tricks and online motorcycle training for beginner and advanced riders!
A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). My advanced training course makes emphasis on slow speed riding techniques at first (such as good clutch and throttle control, proper riding posture, proper use of vision, etc.), then proceeds to more advanced techniques (such as aggressive braking, trail braking, maximal lean angle). The course incorporates a lot of exercises from DOSAF slow speed riding (similar to police rodeo like motorcycle training in USA), braking and cornering exercises and motogymkhana style riding. And now, since I actively learn English - I decided to post some useful videos for both your and mine practice!😉
🏍️🏍️🏍️
Since everyone writes this, it's necessary, I suppose 🤷, so here we go. Disclaimer: Ride at your own risk, you are responsible for your own safety. Me, Andrey Bodrov and my channel, Moto Control disclaim any liability incurred in connection with the use of riding techniques from this channel. Use common sense, wear full protective gear and ride in a safe and predictable manner!

When I was taking my license, my instructor told me some gold nuggets: The rear brake is also called the "stability brake" and should be used as such when needed. (to gain some extra stability) this is especially important at slow speeds (walking speed). When braking, the front and rear brakes are used together, never on their own (except for walking speed where the rear break can be used on its own) If you need to brake a lot or hard, you are not planning ahead enough, riding this way will get you hurt. Hard breaking should only be "needed" when something unexpected occurs. Never yank the brakes, squeeze the brakes to maximize control and braking efficiency. Identify "escape paths" when you ride and try to swerve or avoid the problem rather than braking for it. Evasive maneuvers let you maintain control and also get you out of the situation faster. And the best nugget he gave me was that "Everyone is an idiot and you are invisible. It is your job to keep yourself safe."

Using rear and feathering the front is called trail braking and is the safest way to brake on a motorcycle 😉 feathering meaning you don't give it full force you clench it lightly a few times rather than grabbing it

One detail nearly everyone leaves out is DO NOT grab the clutch in a panic and immediately disengage drive to the rear wheel. When you declutch, you are now free-wheeling, and your speed increases as opposed to just letting off the throttle. in gear. When free-wheeling, even moderate braking can lock up the rear wheel, especially on wet surfaces. Using both brakes, in gear, and declutching as you get to a stop, maintains better control.

Well at least for E-Bikes there's an ABS system made by Bosch. Here's a vid showing it in use: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cFechd6UgvA.html You can also get "regular" E-Bikes (no MTB) with that system, but most videos showing those are in German. I think it's great, especially when you consider that a lot of E-Bike riders tend to be a bit older and/or don't ride as much as avid cyclists (and yes I know that in recent years also younger people have started riding E-Bikes)
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade Год назад
Letting off the rear brake is fine, so long as the motorcycle is vertical or close enough not to be thrown into a highside crash. Even with ABS, your maximum stopping force is going to be just before the ABS kicks in, so it will help a bit if you misjudge and apply a bit of extra brake, but other than that it mostly sits there doing nothing.
@davidgoldstrong8286
@davidgoldstrong8286 Год назад
The rear brake keeps the bike more stable as it doesn't cause the front to dive, but as long as you apply gentle pressure on the front brake you should be fine, these days abs is fitted to bikes which stops the bike from locking up under heavy breaking, if you break in a straight line then you shouldn't lose control, ultimately don't ride fast as this gives you more time to react and don't tailgate. Ride within the speed limits and remember that your not on a race track

I have found that over the years of riding and training and watching YT video's like this have made me a better rider . there are 3 parts of any motor vehicle , acceleration , maneuvering and 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘braking. practice them all individually and get to know your bike. and always ride within your means.

Hi Andrey, Related to the STANDUP-EFFECT whilst braking in corners I can confirm these explanations from my practice - especially with my Ducati with 16inch wheels. Many drivers who heard about this 16inch-effect refused to drive this ABS-less DUC. I myself considered this and accustomed very early, so I used it perfectly and easy in narrow and fast changing curves in our Blackforest Mountains. Still remember the headshakes of some bikers - watching me braking lately in "vertex". =Made me SMILE/Grin instead.... Druzhba Robin

Both brakes have their place. Combined braking for all normal stops. Rear braking only when at slow speed on wet grass or gravel. On sport or naked bikes quick stops from speed both but large bias to front after weight transfer starts. Braking on turns well covered in video if you are leaning and lock a wheel. Riding dirt bikes magnify all these rules and is great training for anyone that has access.

@@georgejameson9317 Indeed, 20% braking power can be the difference between stopping in time and stopping slightly after the time to stop. It's also super helpful in the low speed crashes that are most common as it helps smooth out the acceleration and stabilize the biek. Pretty much the only time to actively avoid using it is if you're leaned over and might need to reduce the amount of brake you're using.

I learned long ago that brakes are my enemy. Using them takes away the kinetic energy (motion) that came from burning gasoline, so like you, I drive in such a way as to minimize brake use. The results are better gasoline mileage and less wear on the brakes thus making them last longer. So what is this "such a way"? Don't tailgate.

The rear break is useful when you have the time to stop, or when you want to adjust your trajectory in corners. But when you need to break hard, just focus on the front.. If you handle the front correctly, the rear won't make any difference, as it will have no grip left.

For the fastest stop, you can use the rear brake during the first second of braking. Then release it after 1 second (on non-ABS, on ABS you can simply hold it), because at that point there shouldn't be much weight left on the rear wheel.
@PAD32
@PAD32 Год назад

@@PAD32 Officially, we're supposed to start with both brakes, and continually increase front brake pressure while reducing rear brake pressure. But I find that gradually reducing rear brake pressure is simply too complicated. So in my practice stops, for hard stops I simply press the rear and let go. That's the only way I can (a) brake hard while also (b) using both brakes, while also (c) not locking the rear wheel (or perhaps it does lock, but by releasing the rear brake within 1 second, I wouldn't notice this anyway). In a true emergency stop, my strategy would be to use front brake + engine braking (no downshifting, just closing the throttle). If my foot was already above the pedal then I'll press it and release it. But if I wasn't covering the rear brake, then I won't use it (I often cover the front brake, and sometimes the rear brake too). People often think that by practice one can find out how much rear brake one can use before it locks. But I find that this doesn't really work, if you brake hard enough in the front, then the rear will lock with any amount of rear brake pressure, so if we brake hard enough, we have to fully release the rear brake (on non-ABS, obviously it's much easier on an ABS bike).

During my driving training (on a non-ABS bike!) I was tough to completely ignore the rear brake in an emergency situation. Instead focus entirely on brining the front to the maximum, just at the friction limit. That's hard enough. No one can do that for both brakes, maybe a racing driver manages this. The rear brake is the low speed brake that stabilized the bike. For the motorcycle license I needed to show full braking at 50, 70 and 90km/h - quite frightening. Now with an ABS bike this is MUCH easier and MUCH safer!
@MaaZeus
@MaaZeus 11 месяцев назад
Pretty much same here. Front brake is what we are told to use most, just learn to do it progressively. We can try to learn using both in emergency situation but most likely we still end up using only one when shit happens and then it is better to use front rather than rear. Rear brake is mostly for low speed maneuvering in a parking lot or tight U-turns.

As you stated, it’s possible to apply a lot of breaking power while leaning. The more the bike leans, the lesser the braking gradient must be. In other words, the more a bike leans the smaller the braking variations must be. So if you don’t lean, you can quickly apply or release more brake, but if you lean, you must gently apply or release more brake.

@@infinite_saurabh not exactly… You can still use a lot of breaking while leaning. But the more you lean the smaller the variations must become. When you are in a straight line you can apply or remove a lot of breaking quickly. @@infinite_saurabh Try it for yourself. Go to a parking lot. Then brake and instead of releasing most of your breaking, keep some while leaning your bike and start a circle. Your bike will simply keep slowing down while you are turning.
