I have owned a CB500x (2016) and have over 16,000km on it. I have driven all types of road, in nearly all seasons here in Canada. It had been through heat waves, bone-chilling cold, torrential downpours, and high wind. It has survived ALL of them. I have a set of Kenda Big Block knobbys on it, and took it to a really rough, washed out muddy trail, tires were literally under mud and water, and with some struggle wrestling it's weight,(I'm only 125 lbs), I was able to make it through. It had enough power in 1st and 2nd to pull itself and me no problem, and was also light enough to not get pulled down into deep mud channels. It has kept me on the bike, while ripping gravel/dirt/rain going 80-90 km/h. As far as mileage, I have gone well over 400kms on a single tank of gas at highway speeds. Did my first wheelie on it during my 2nd year riding, tire popped up with no effort whatsoever. Reached top speed of 174km/h on the highway. This bike is fully capable of handling most of what you throw at it STOCK, and for a 500cc CITY BIKE, that is saying something. With a few small purchases, it can be very offroad worthy, and with a full rally rid kit, and some custom parts, you could take it virtually anywhere. Having spent $7,000(CAD) all in, I feel it was worth every single dollar.

They have a brand new 2017 by me for 4,999. I wish I could buy it! This bike checks all the boxes for me except the suspension. Riding with my wife on the back we would do that upgrade right away.

Great review you nailed it. I went from a 125cc to a cb500x and it felt fast, great engine 70mpg+ and reliable tourer.

I see a lot of people, even professionals, who seem to be confusing dual purpose and "adventure style" bike. From technical perspective, dual purpose means that bike can go on and off-road with compromises in both areas. Adventure bike means you can take it for "adventure". There is no definition of adventure and for some people it is camping in their backyard and for some it climbing the Himalayas. In technical aspect, the "adventure style" means mostly that it has more natural upright seating that is comfortable for prolonged riding and that it has capability to carry substantial cargo. I don't think that "adventure" requires motocross activity. As for CB500X, it is entry level and as such, it has lower price and less features than more expensive bikes. It handles highway very well. It is very economical in terms of gas consumption (I'm getting 65-67mpg) and maintenance. It is fairly light but, heavy enough to fight wind. And, there is really nothing else in this class of 500cc which I think is really really perfect compromise for those who prefer economy and comfort instead of performance and features (=higher cost). And honestly, I got it tonight to 90mph and didn't even notice until I looked at speedometer. How much more do you need?

oknevals I loved your explanation man. I am 6,3ft and looking for a bike. Months ago I sat on one of theese after sitting on many bikes and I knew straight away that that is the ideal bike for. I just loved it and fitted perfectly on it. Inspite of being 36 yo and dont have my bike license yet, this is the bike I am going for as soon as I pass my test. It is a very confortable bike and a smooth bike to ride. Great for a 1st bike. Thats what I have been told by professionals. Thanks a lot
@oknevals
@oknevals 6 лет назад
I kind of felt the same way. i did a lot of research on cost and performance and this bike made sense to me. I went to look at it as there was a good deal at nearby dealership and I fell at home right away. Both looks and feel were adding to all the specs that I was aware of. Now, don't get deceived by the 1st bike advice. That bike has plenty of power to get you in some very serious trouble. Get some additional instruction, like "Twist of the Wrist". The basic training (as offered in the US via MSF) is not sufficient for machine like that. Yes, there are more powerful and feature rich machines like Suzuki V-strom 650, Yamaha FJ-09 (which I fell in love with over the weekend while demo riding) and couple other ones. But, it is all about cost of ownership and realistic personal needs. If money is not an issue, one can own more then one and ride based on mood. If you can afford only one then, you have to make calculations and make some compromises.
@alexistosta2399

oknevals Thanks bro. For me money is an issue and I will only buy 1 bike. There is an older bike that I love and it is also very good. Cheaper as it is much older, the Yamaha XT 600. But even buying this one, would be used. I rid scooters before but nothing with manual gears. The bike will be for comuting. No off roading. 1st step is get my license then I will see after that. I also sat on a Kawasaki Versys 650 and I loved that baby but is more expensive. You can tell straight away thay it is a great bike. Thanks a lot
@jamesellis5549
@jamesellis5549 6 лет назад
great explanation.I have used everything from a 250 Kawasaki ninja to an Ironhead Sportster for an "adventure" bike.My idea of adventure is unpaved,muddy and rocky.The biggest factor in offroad riding is wheel placement and skill level of rider.
@oknevals
@oknevals 6 лет назад
i completely agree that skill level is critical and sometimes machine too. I had thrilling time on some crazy rocky trails through the forest that was way above my skill level and I made it alive and in one piece. I also had adventure riding on nicely paved technical road between two state parks that had gorgeous views. To some places I can take either my XT250 or CB500X but, for some things one machine is better than the other. For some rough off-road, XT is clear winner due to lower power, light weight and ground clearance. For distance covering, CB is way better due to higher power, riding comfort and tank range. Now, I can push either machine in direction that it is not intended for but, is that adventure or just pain risk? Although, sitting on any my bikes and riding around neighborhood is sometimes adventure enough. Even going to the dealership to look at some other machines :-)

This is such a confusing review. I don't know if Honda should be offended, or happy that you are comparing it to Benelli's and BMWs. There is simply no other entry level ADV bike out there that has the same power and versatility. The versys x 300 would be something close, but to hear that engine scream at 11000 RPM on the highway just doesn't suit most people. This bike is a quality, affordably priced Adventure Style motorcycle. Yes there are some shortfalls, like the Dunlop tires and the lack of ABS shut off, and rubber pegs. But Honda markets this bike primarily as a commuter motorcycle that can do a little bit of off-roading. Fitting this motorcycle with rally raid products would catapult it into capabilities that BMW GS and Triumph tigers would handle, with substantially less weight. You can't use all that power on the trail. So having a bike with 1000 or 1200 CC's or higher is pretty much a waste on trail riding. You complained about the power, but then did little wheelies in the beginning of the review. It kept you comfortable on your 250 + km Journey, which is an excellent feat for a small adventure bike. You took it off road with the Dunlop tires, and you didn't dump the bike or stall, and it handled some rocks and a few divets that I would bet you would never bring your xsr900 on. Nobody would ever take a Honda Hornet off road. The suspension travel of the cb500x, although not as substantial as the heavier ADV bikes, is just fine for light off-road use. I think you were a little too hard on this fantastic bike. I'm picking mine up in 3 weeks and I can't wait to enjoy every moment in the seat.

@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
Hi Darell, thank you for your comment. I understand your arguments, and I am not saying this is not a good bike. In fact in versatility it is probably the best choice. Also for people who are just beginning this is probably the best choice. I saw many reviews of stock Honda CB500X with stock tyres where they try to make this feeling, this is actually and capable adventure bike and it is not. As you are saying the offroad capabilities are similar to Hornet (except the twin cylinder which is way more friendly in offroading). I absolutely agree with Rally Raid products, awesome thing. On the other hand I don't see the reason why this bike should not be compared to its biggest closest competitor Benelli TRK 502 - very very popular bike and in many markets actually preferred over Honda. Again, thank you for your time and enjoy the motorcycle, it will be very good. Take care.

This is what happens when you watch reviews of a bike you just paid for. I highly recommend you never do that in future. You'll love the bike. I've had many many bikes and I loved my GSX750F....and it's widely regarded as a piece of shit. If I'm being objective, it probably was. But we had 20,000 miles of great times. I'll miss her. Buying a Triumph Explorer soon...hope it stands up to it!

I’ve had my cb 500 x for about a month now and im very pleased with it. Fun to ride, cheap to buy/run, looks good and super reliable! You definately have something to look forward too! Also i guess you have bin spending a lot of time researching on this bike and it is actually not easy to find a bad review on it mostly all are positive. I do agree with this review to an extent though i would never take my cb 500 x on any offroad except from fireroads and stuff like that but i also did not buy this bike for offroading. I bought it for what it is. A versatile, reliable and super economic machine. I just love it. Congratz on you new bike my friend it will serve you well Regards from Denmark

First and foremost, I've never bought into the notion that a bike that breaks 90 mph in 13.5 seconds is a bike for a beginner. If you're going 65 mph at 8000 feet elevation and want to pass someone, yes you'll need to kick it down into 4th. Enough said about the power. As far as an actual review of the bike, I've got 23,000 miles on mine, 9000 of which is highway touring miles. I've done everything from commuting to the Beartooth Highway. No, it's not an off-road bike, but you can gravel road it a bit if you want. The truth of the matter is that NOBODY is making a bike with this seating and foot peg position for this price at 430 lbs. with a flat torque curve and steady horsepower curve. The Versys 300 is close but the motor is a peaky screamer. The Moto Guzzi V7 has an upright riding position with the pegs under you where they belong, but it's a lot more money and the resale is squat. Plus try to find a Guzzi dealer when you need one on a trip. With all of the riding I've done on mine, my opinion hasn't changed from the day I bought it. Honda really got it together and offered a damn good bike for the money. And the new ones have a better transmission from what I understand.

Hi Ron, I appreciate your comment and your experience. You absolutely added value to my video here for people. I am not saying it is not good bike, I just was not super impressed from it. Also my point, and I explained more, was to warn unexperienced people who read on the Honda website: "This is an adventure" and they immediately take it to trails and off-road of let's say Romania here in Europe. Proper middle-weigh adventure bike for me is for example SWM Dual Sport X for fair price, very durable, with spoked wheels, huge suspension travel, very good protection of engine and lightweight single-cylinder. Not much bikes like this on the market anymore. But anyway, I am very happy you are satisfied with the Honda. It is not bad bike at all and I agree with you. Ride safe and take care :)
@ronvaughan8041
@ronvaughan8041 6 лет назад
JF, I understand. Someone not really familiar with true adventure riding might get caught off guard by the marketing. I would call it an "adventure 'styled' street bike with a little extra ground clearance". But I agree with you that a true dual sport is the better way to go if you really want to beat it up. I bet you have some great riding in your area.

Last year I drove over 2000km on Swedish Gravel Roads. It was nice. Yes it is no real offroad bike, but i think it is a real adventure bike. Because it has a high range, it has a low weight ,good onroad and gravel conditions and ok offroad conditions. I love this Bike still after 20000km. I tryed both, the NC and the CB. The NC is much slower i think. Because of the low rpm and the high weight. I liked the CB much more.

I have this motorbike since 6 months ago and I do every day at least 50km with it. I should say I basically agree with your review although in your conclusions you seem to generally see the glass more empty than full. I mean, I totally agree this is not an offroad bike, unless you heavily prepare it for it. In fact I just changed tyres last week (I bought the bike second hand) and I've put 100% pure on-road tyres, much better than the original Dunlop. But I don't think Honda is marketing it like off-road, as you suggest. The adventure concept is an "ad" term that probably means "long trips" and a more comfortable riding, more than off-road trips. Compared to the 500f this one has a more natural riding position and the suspensions will probably handle better bumps or road irregularities. Using it in a daily basis I like the riding position and the slightly longer suspensions. But it is not an off-road bike, I agree. Same with the motor. The motor is the most technologically advanced and better part of this bike by far. But, as you say, the strong points are fuel consumption and no vibrations, not nerve. But again, I'm ok with that, because I do 300km each week with it, so I'm superhappy with the low consumption instead of being worried about if it is not so fun or nervous than other models (probably more expensive). In fact the bike is faster than what I usually need. But basically agree with your review.

I tihnk Honda themselves are confused about this category. They are putting together all the X types and off road bikes into one category. Yes your assessment is right. It should not really go off road and it is meant for long travels on highways etc. For that This bike is imo one of the best in the A2 licence and 500cc range. I usually do 500-700km trips on weekends and it is a lot of fun. My wallet does not suffer as it would have under a different bike and I never feel tired or aching after a ride. I can ride for 5 hours straight and I am just fine. I just returned from Coratia last week. Had to do 1500kms and it was absolutely fine on this bike. I had a stop mid way but it was absolutely fine to go all that way. Also being able to pack everything I needed for 2 weeks and the bike still felt amazing with the handling.

They need to launch a version of this bike with the 499cc dohc original motor, or overbore this one to achieve original 57+ hp, and add fully stage 3 Rally-Raid kit, plus they can add an ABS bypass, or owners can do this with piggy back fuse holder with a manual switch ( so works same as removing the fuse, but much less trouble in use, just flick the switch). I think that combination would create the perfect 500 go anywhere bike.

I have the CBR500R and am thinking about trading another bike we have for the 500X. On the 500R, I put a GSXR 650 rear shock on it and got RaceTech springs/valves and Fox 7wt up front. Rides like a dream. Little bit of tinkering on this chassi can yield a great result!

I keep taking mine into the deserts of Australia. Sure it's not a Sand Sled, however if you let the tyres down low enough it will chug through some deep stuff too. The Multistrada supposedly better offroad? You've gotta be joking. It weighs over 35kg more and also only has 17inch wheels. The biggest point this bike has is reliability. 26.000km with a good couple thousand on rough dirt, drops, corrugations, sand,.... and not a single issue. If anything really broke, it's the gear attached to it. Also you completely forgot the ability to put on kits from Rally Raid on it. They tested their converted prototype by riding it through the Simpson Desert.

When I was deciding between the R, F and X I bought the X. The F and R had a quite aggressive position for me and when I was test driving them My wrists were aching after the rides and so was my back. When I tried the X I had none of those issues and the seating position was amazing. Also I was going to use the bike I bought for going on trips around Europe so it was quite an easy decision. I tihnk the X types should be sold as versatile bikes and not as adventure bikes in the off road sense as honde is doing that atm. Putting together Xs with off roaders.

I think you're quite tough, but ultimately it's a dead accurate review, and most, most importantly you precisely illustrate your points with examples. There is some debate around the definition of 'adventure' in the context of an ADV bike, but your little single track detour is in my opinion what it's all about. Unpaved roads, a bit of dirt, and the occasional (very occasional) rocky bit of single track should be achievable, and you demonstrate that indeed it does all these things, with the caveat that you do need to have an idea what you're doing. Also I'm not sure you noticed but you do demonstrate a good degree of maneuverability on asphalt. The bike looked very pointable.

Agree with Darrell V. Negative bias crept in regularly during this review. It’s a learner bike and a bike for someone who has enough power and handling etc to satisfy themselves. A bit more discipline is required when reviewing this Honda product. Other than that a nice review. Thanks JF Motorcycles.

Check Royal Enfield Himalayan, BMW G310GS, Kawasaki Versys 300, new KTM Adventure 390 or Benelli TRK 502X. All of them way more capable in off road than this. But Honda still has plenty of advantages, thats for sure.

I have this bike and I do light offroad with no worries. Agree with the throttle issue but I have got used to it more or less. In my case I can't have more suspension travel than this because I'm 1.66m. I was thinking if it is possible to change the front wheel to a 19" to see if that helps little more in offroad. Would this make any positive difference? Thanks!

Hi! I only saw Rally Raid who sells the kit with 19 wheel. It is very quality and useful upgrade, though quite expensive. It would definitely do a difference in off road and possibly bike would be more nimble. I am happy you enjoy the bike.

Absolutely. Brings the bike into a different price category with heavy competition. (pun intended) I see the merits in the CB500X for a lot of different purposes, but, yes, adding $3k to this bike does put it in the 800GS and Tiger 800 (and used big ADVs ) range.
@Staromil
@Staromil 6 лет назад
No it doesn't. CB500X is $6899 + $3k worth of RR mods = 9899. BMW F800GS starts at $12,295. And they only sell the "Adventure" model here in Europe which is 15k. Tiger 800 is 12k+ also. The only thing you can get at that 10k mark is Yamaha Tracer 700. Only you can't, if you live in the US. And it has zero offroading capabilities ( it is a road bike with upright position.) So what's really left is Kawasaki Versys X300, which will be a little better off road (stock bikes) or cheaper (these costly upgrades for CB500X) but in any case much worse on road. Conclusion: CB500X is in it's own class, there are some very nice mods available and it doesn't suit everybody. Specifically it is a missmactch for tall and heavy guys like the bloke who made this video. But you could tell that by looking at the first shot, where he is standing behind the bike. So I wouldn't really blame the Honda here.

Spot on The nonsense that is talked about this bike is comical. It will go anywhere a GS1200 will and more. If you drop it you won't need three blokes to pick it up and it's nicerbob the road

It's no more of an adventure bike than the F model it's just the seating position and height that is the difference! What motorcycle in it's price range is inspiring , makes 60 hp and gets the same mpg with Honda reliability? Comparing it to bikes that cost twice or three times as much makes zero sense just like comparing it to older bikes. Manufacturers have to many rules to follow now and profit margins are far tighter than they were 20 years ago so there is no incentive to throw a ton of technology at a bargain basement bike. It's the same reason you cannot get GTR performance out of a Sentra!
@Matte8lack

Well said. Also why do people expect something shiny from an all purpose bike with Adv styling? Maybe honda should make a category for most X bikes as versatility bikes. They are a jack of all trades and master of none.

I don't know. My point is this bike is an Adventure category of Honda products and only thing which makes it Adventure is marketing or communication. It is basically the same bike as Honda CBR500R with different styling and X in the end of the name. I would always be more happy in any adventureous trip on most of other bikes: Suzuki V-Strom, any of 1 cylinder (BMW 650GS, Aprilia Pegaso, Yamaha XT 660 you name it) etc. However in comparison with new bikes, there are not much alternatives and at the same time and again: this is not a bad bike at all :)

You've put too much emphasis on not being suitable for off-road. Stats from manufacturers say that more than 80% of buyers of any so called "adventure" bike, will never get out and ride their bikes off-road. Nevertheless, I like your review style.
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
At the same time there are people who buy it to take it to Romanian/Albanian offroads because it is an adventure. People do not see the difference between this and let's say the previous generation Adventure bikes such as Yamaha XT660 or BMW Dakar. That was one of my points of this review :) But I understand your point and absolutely agree. With BMW R1200GS is the situation opposite. Fairly capable bike which almost never taste the offroad.

Everyone buys a SUV for the ability to go 'off road' (read mount curbs and park poorly). The review to me seemed skewed and I'm unsure why you kept comparing the bike to others? If this bike is not for you, that's fine- but I found the whole position you started from as a little bit strange. 18 minutes of my life I can't take back.. but I hope it works out for you in the end. Maybe just review a motorcross bike and compare it to a Ducati and cry about how the paint doesn't blend in with the colour of your eyebrows or something.

I was thinking a lot yesterday about being honest on RU-vid. It is my highest priority as I often see reviews all over the world which feels like the ad and not like an independent opinion. This is horrible to me. From my conversations with people it seems normal they say: "You know when (Some company) invites me to the press launch, I just don't want to write or record anything bad about the motorcycle, just because I want to be invited again." LOL. I will never do it this way. Thanks for the comment and opinion. Are there videos from Thailand?

I am happy you remain independent and give a good honest opinion. Like you say there are a lot of people who feel duty bound to give a better review. Yes I have 2 playlists from Thailand on my channel. Tour of the North on the CB500X and Tour of the South East on a CRF250M. I will be doing more in the future on a different bike and area soon. Thank for sharing a real experience. Numbers don't lie 197kg and very modest figures on engine seems like a weak combination. 2 mid size riders (80kg each) and some luggage (30kg) should be a real challenge on mountains and acceleration will be compromised. On the other side this is a very common thread now days: vstrom 250, versys 300 and so on, a bunch of undepowered and ultra heavy bikes are flooding markets. Maybe they are trying to produce more eco friendy bikes sacrificing usabiloity.

@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
Yes but it can handle the dirt and fire road with the same capability as Honda Hornet or Honda CBR500R which is bascially the same bike. My point was to people who read on Honda website "Adventure" and then they percieve this bike as something which they should take every summer to Romanian/Albanian forests. I would not do so.

A tour company we love has just bought one of these and 3 NC750's. Personally I'm disappointed as they just don't excite. Overtaking uphill on those Gran Canaria mountain roads could prove a long job especially if you are a tall heavy guy like me. Given the limited power do you think this bike suitable for carrying pillions?
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
Hi! As for Rent company, this is an amazing motorcycle. It is very important for how much you buy it and for how much after few years sell it, same as the price you can rent it + costs of maintenance and overall reliability. And from this point we can hardly find better bikes than CB500 and NC750. My friend Ondrej who runs the rental in Gran Canaria also just ordered one NC750. I can imagine I would go for a shorter trip with my girlfriend on this bike, for sure more realistic than on KTM Duke 390 let's say. If someone is normal and not like me, so having like 75 kg, riding with a pillion must be absolutely normal thing.

Big fella, some of your comments are spot on, but taking a bike with road tyres off road is a recipe for disaster, sorry but only someone who was forced to or is an idiot would do that. If you buy a set of good off road tyres for the CB500x it then converts into a decent green lane / adventure bike, not tailor made like an africa twin of KLX but capable. In the form you have, the same as mine, it's a very capable touring, commuter ... It's not a 'beginners bike', though a very good bike for someone stepping up, it's fast, for a 500, comfortable and reliable ... it does everything really well .... you big fella need an africa twin or something that befits your stature.... By the way, I do like your video's, just think you're sweating the off-road part and you're not doing the x the justice it deserves ....
