It's time to get started on the "new to me" Civic and see if we can get some direction as to what the next step is going to be. In this episode we check the compression on the Civic to see if we can get some direction and gather the data before we tear into it.

I hardly do static compression testing anymore but I like a lil' old school that served it's purpose until we started doing leak-down tests. I can't wait until you do a leak-down on the #1&2 and see if you get blow-by between them or into the cooling system especially with the overheating symptoms. Now we have relative compression & running compression tests but nothing replaces the sound of air rushing out of a cylinder into the intake, exhaust, adjacent cylinder, cooling system, etc..and no diagnosing waveforms "Old School" :O On the other hand Man I love my Pico...you can turn anything into a science experiment

My daughter drove my '89 Volvo 740 6.5 miles ( going by the mileage for the tow home) with the cooling fan and water pump in the trunk of the car. It got hot. After the tow home I put it back together with a new pump and drove it for 9 months before the head gasket gave out.

Despite half the compression packing it's suitcases and leaving, it still runs. Silly little things are dammed near bulletproof. When I was sixteen my father bought me a 1981 model. Despite being used to do reverse donuts, roll backs, being severely overheated and being used to have race down to the local beach (ahhhh the smell of smouldering brake pads) it just would not quit. I ended up selling it for $50 just to get it off the lawn when I got something with more power.

Good morning Eric. I hope your having a great week end. Thank you for the tips in this video. I never paid much attention to the color of the metal on a plug so that was one of those "ah ha" moments. I like this little car so I hope you can save it.

9:38 "who guessed number one?" I did dude and it was because of the color of the thread on the plug. In my experience it's usually the 1 that's that color that the cylinder has took the brunt of it. Old video but just thought I would mention it love ya content dude 😁

Hi! I always use "Dielectric Tune-up grease" on Spark Plug Boots.It protects electrical connections,ignition parts and wiring from moisture,salt,dirt and corrosion. Prevents fusing and tearing of spark plug boots and provides high temperature lubrication on rubber,plastic and ceramic. My grease is made by"Permatex".

Great Video. This is going to be a good series. The "wait for it" video moment makes it's presence known. Now begins the ever long and drawn out coffee drinking - counter top tapping waiting period. I'm betting that no matter what is found it won't be a challenge for you. Oh yeah... My bet was all four leaking. I just didn't think the worse one would come from the middle of the head. In degree from bad to better was #4, #1, #3 with #2 being the least of the bunch. The coil boots tell you a lot but not the whole answer.

Once the head is off more will be revealed. From what I've seen thus far I'd be tempted to do only the head and head gasket and drive it and watch for over heating. With the right owner that car ought to get another 100K miles down the road. Great series explaining how much time and effort (money) to put into a car like this. How good is good enough considering the circumstances? That's the question. I've dragged many cars home and got them up and running, most of them worked out some were a money pit. Eric knows what he is doing, it's a gamble but the odds are in his favor.

I was going to guess #1 or #3 the last few engines jobs i had to put pistons and rings in under warranty those were the culprit cylinders... Btw if you ever get a 2013 Malibu with a 2.5 or any vehicle with a 2.5 and a P0411 and the solenoid valve works but there is no exhaust flow out the head, if you pull the exhaust manifold you will see 3 casting plugs, remove the end ones and clean all the carbon out of the ports... theres little slits that go in to the exhaust ports and they fill up with carbon. GM has us replacing heads under warranty, but cars are coming out of warranty, and i recently had to clean one out due to no part availability due to a redesign coming out in the next few months.

I had a 1988 Toyota pickup with a 22R. I had the head gasket replaced three times. The third time, the Toyota-trained mechanism welded and surfaced the head. Apparently a bunch got through that had defective castings. Also, the harmonic balancer wore in the seal area and started spraying oil all over the engine compartment. Cam chain plastic guides broke too... :

Can't help but think that throwing a motor in her be best with your goal in mind. If you've got the time and patience -ya right- I think the bottom end will work out with only sorting the head.

Does this make sense.... but I like these more DIY jobs that most can do. Don't get me wrong I like all the vids, but the ones that involve the in depth scanning and repairs that are near impossible with out a scanner are for me would just involve the car going to a shop. But hey...atleast I get whats going on and not completely clueless thanks to these videos.

Cars are becoming more and more computerized and high tech, so having the tools is the new game in automotive repair. Luckily a lot of scan tools can be rented at auto part stores for the DIY'ers own use.

Today's engines are pushing 200, old school pre-emission days would be happy with 125 average and start calling for overhaul in the 60s or lower. But usually at 60 you already have a vague idea it's about done for.

@Graveltrucking
@Graveltrucking 7 лет назад
The cylinders haven't been weak for very long because the plugs are fairly clean and its not belching out blue, its got hot enough to blue a spark plug. That engine must have been pinging and snapping being that hot, surprised it cranks over and runs. When you blue a spark plug you know it got hot, to blue steel your melting aluminum at that heat. Pull the head off see what the cylinders are like. You really can't trust something when it got that hot, excessive heat does hidden damage that you can't see. Don't want to dump a ton of money into a beater car that when running is only worth 1500-2000 dollars.
@leebarnes655
@leebarnes655 7 лет назад
The blue part is not steel though, it's some kinda cadmium coating of who can really know. The color change is significant, we just can't apply high carbon steel forge rules is all I'm getting at.
