The EP3 is not the mk1. Its the mk2. And the FN2 is the mk3. The first is the EK9, which never sold outside of Japan officially. Looks like you really need to do some research.

The new car was not 50% quicker, more like around 30%. The old ones were 50% slower. To be 50% quicker it would have to do 2.9secs.

Yeah, I do not want to come out sounding like I'm nit picking and I never correct people on grammar errors but if the math is wrong then,well, I can't turn a blind eye to that lol. It is a very common mistake though and an easy trap to fall into.

EP3 is still my favorite Civic Type R of all time. The EK is pretty cool with its B16B but I just love the K20.

The ek9 was never sold in Europe/uk and had to be imported. So the ep3 was actually the original type -r in the uk

I think the best CTR was the EK9. It was lighter by about 200 kg and had better handling and steering with its double wishbone suspension. Sure it wasn't much stock compared to these newer models but modified with a Spoon 1.8 engine and racing suspension it will probably lap faster than the newer Type R's

There aren't a few things right.... For example the ep3 is a little bit faster as the fn2 and it weights less. It's also faster as the fn2 in Corners! One of the differences between the fn2 and the ep3 is also that it has 201hp an the ep3 200hp, for expample. But the Ep3 stills one of the nices Type R's yet. I tested also the 2015 model a on the circuit a few months ago and I was't as much impressed by 310hp 400Nm. I found there's something missing and I guess that's the agressivity from the vtec up to 9500 rpms from the older versions.... everyone has his own opinions, please feel free to comment.

Although you left your comment long you are completely wrong. The fn2 weighs about 40 kilos more but made up for it with a more stiff suspension and chasis.. The acceleration favours the fn2 due to its shorter gearing. Honda is not going to make a new Type R unless it handles better and is faster in a straight line then its predecessor. I know Ep3 heads cannot handle that the Fn2 is even better at the one thing the ep3 is supposedly better lol.

Only Honda kids would brag about "feeling the road" while being in a slow-ass car. Congrats on having nice feel while both running a 14-15 second quarter mile, if they're lucky, and being super slow around a circuit.

Not seen one on the roads yet. I wish they got input from Honda engineers that worked on the nsx type-r. That exhaust would be gone for a start.

Jonathan Kumar I get what you are saying, but this extends to anybody. There are plenty dudes who SUCK at reviewing cars, and some of them work for EVO. You need more than passion. I'm sure the great majority of commenters would be trash despite being "enthusiasts" or knowing facts.

How about mentioning the turbo lag? Under 2500rpm, it takes about 1.5/2secs for it to spool up. Its a fun killer when I was driving the new Type R.

They could find also EK9 for test.. And EDM version of EP3 also was softer, less powerfull etc. than JDM equivalent.. ehh..Japan always have the best for themselves..

We're talking all Type R Hondas as far as I'm concerned, not just Civics. The DC2R EASILY displaces the EP3 if we're ranking top three 'essence of Type R'. The NSX-R must be pretty high up too, although I doubt any of us have actually driven one.. lol

ok lets turbo my k20a type r ep3 and do this test again.let us not forget that the ep3 engine is almost 10 years old and it was just .1 slower than that fn2. incredible engine.

Yet another review that doesn't highlight the glaring stupidity in the new CTR: it has a useless dual exhaust that adds weight for no purpose. This goes completely against the lightweight utility meaning of the Type R badge. Honda used to try and save every last gram as shown by the shifter boot of the NSX Type R.

Never understood the appeal of the EP3, considering the previous models were more affordable and are even more so today, I could think of so many more cars I'd rather spend my money on than the EP3 it's reaching the ridiculous A45 AMG in terms of price in its class

+BlueAxeRacer Correct, that's why it was 0.1 second faster to 60. You're a real genius. Protip: Better get your own opinion than just listen to Mr. Clarkson. You obviously haven't driven both. The EP3 only FEELS faster, because it has less sound insulation and it's overall less "refined". But in fact the FN2 and EP3 are actually equally fast.

You're forgetting the fact that 0.1s faster to 60 and heavier does not mean faster in the real world. Also rear double wishbone is just better than a torsion beam, as cars that treat each wheel differently always handle better. I think you had better listen to Clarkson you know, he's not all nonsense.

+BlueAxeRacer It's true, a rear torsion beam axle isn't as sophisticated as a independent suspension. But then again, it's clear that you haven't driven both cars because if you would, you'd know that in the real world you simply don't feel the difference. But hey, Clarkson* said it's better so there you go. If there are people who rather like to buy a car that's 7 years older, without climate control, no good stereo, no good sound insulation and overall less equipment, JUST because its 40kg lighter and has a better rear suspension, let them. *Also known as the man who throws a fwd car into a corner, goes full throttle and starts complaining about understeer. lol

celaCH1 In the real world, you can tell if the wheels are being treated independently of each other because you will have more grip, clearly, and there are many reasons why you might want a car that is 7 years older, say because a stereo is a stereo, which can be replaced, climate control, which has been the standard for many years, but isn't really needed, and no sound insulation? All the better to hear the engine, I say, and less equipment? Less things to go wrong. Suspension is critical, so if you want the better driver's car, go for the better suspension, i.e. the older car. Guess what? Go full throttle in a modern hatch and you won't understeer, or torque steer because the boffins at Ford, Honda, Renault know how to reduce it's effect.

Like she said the FN2 had increased mid-range torque and "1 hp more" (despite being fitted with balance shafts that cost about 15 hp, so it would otherwise be up on power compared to the EP3), lower vtec engagement point, much lower final drive ratio (5.0 vs 4.7), and also later FN2s had the JDM-spec Torsen differential. So the FN2 is actually not necessarily as slow compared to a Euro-spec EP3 as you might think (JDM spec EP3 is another matter of course).

That extra acceleration is not "because of the turbo", but because of the ONE HUNDRED EXTRA BHP. Of coure the Turbo has something to say there, but its not the point

She sounds nervous because she's too close to the mic and speaking too quietly. She should be further back and giving it more oomph. You wouldn't hear any of those slurpy noises in between words and she would sound more confident.

20-60mph test in 2nd gear, what a surprise the new ones faster.... Even back in the day nobody did those kind of tests because it would of got beat by most of its competition. Instead do a max speed blast down a B road and see how they compare because i bet the old Type R would be more fun pinging off the limiter and screeching tyres round corners!

she clearly did this in 3rd gear from start to finish in the ep3/fn2, if she did it in 2nd gear and actually used vtec It would have been much closer.

Hegovii The EP3 is widely considered to be the better car from a dynamic perspective as it has fully independent multi-link rear suspension) compared to the more simple and less effective torsion beam setup on the FN2) as well as being 60kg lighter. They both had basically the same K20 engine, slightly updated in the FN2, but with very similar outputs.

James Baggaley correct! ep3 has k20a2 and fn2 has basically the same engine like u said but twicked a little and named it k20z4😀

I hate the back wheel arches on the new type R the rear wheels just look like they dont fill the arches enough , maybe a lower the offset on a nice set of concave alloys would improve this but stock it just looks wierd

Not a fan of this reviewer. The ep3 is the mk2 not the mk1, that would be the ek9. There isn't much substance to the review of each car. Nothing about the ep3's independent suspension or amazing gear change that gave it it's character. Nor that the fn2 was flawed, doing away with the independent suspension and that it had a very poor ride quality. Also comparing the fn2 to the new fiesta ST and it's turbo engine is baffling. The fn2 type r came out in 2007, the fiesta over 5 years later... No offence intended. But please bring back the Chris Harris / Steve Sutcliffe-esque reviews. Also 2:17. Please someone explain to the reviewer why lift off oversteer / braking though corners is bad... 🙈
