In this video, I mess around with one of my small engines, mounting a 10 pound fly wheel directly to the crankshaft, I also do a little bit of cam work to get it to have full compression at very low rpm. Series

I would be careful of letting the engine idle really low for long periods of time especially when cold. These engines use a lubrication method known as splash lubrication and at 1000rpm and below the rotating assembly Doesn't really have enough speed to sustain enough oil pressure to lubricate everything properly. It's best to let the engine and oil warm up at a higher rpm and then let it idle low briefly. As the engine at that point will already have enough oil in the valve train and rotating/contact points to avoid harming the components. Its the same reason why car engines have dedicated oil pumps that pump the oil for the engine at low rpm.

Yes, thanks for your comment. I am aware of this, I would occasionally rev it up to get oil splashing everywhere. I would've been more careful if I was concerned about the well-being of the engine, which I am not really.

@Differentthings2006 If you are looking into getting any other engines to idle as low as possible, look into a 5hp horizontal shaft briggs and stratton engine. Combined with the low compression and in some older models, the iron rotating assembly, which is heavier than their aluminum counterparts, they can idle at impressively low rpms like in the 400rpm range. Far lower than any honda Clone motors can go.

@@MotorMania001 Interesting, if I ever get one, I will test it out.

It sounds good. Coming from a small engine builder

a few years ago, someone had an 8hp? with around a 30lb flywheel, but it was mounted on a cordwood saw, so that old small engine was cutting firewood, without need for tractor

They have RPM meters. both friction and spark detection to get the RPM.

Yep, I have one, but it's currently being used on a different engine. Sure would be easier than trying to calculate it from the camera SoMo.

I gave my brother x2 engines similar to that one I was given them but couldn't find a use look at the fun I could be having

Oh yes, there's all kinds of fun things you can do with otherwise useless engines. :)

I see a diesel 196cc in the background! I would LOVE to see this test on that. See how low it will go!!!!

I have tested it out before, since it has fuel injection, you don't need to suck up fuel through the venturi so you can theoretically go much lower RPM, and still get full fuel.
@petedebo6906
@petedebo6906 8 месяцев назад
You wont destroy that motor it has enough rpm to sling oil all over its not a pressure system
@Differentthings2006
@Differentthings2006 8 месяцев назад
Yep, I'm aware of this. That's the nice thing about a dipper oiling system. It's simple and reliable yet effective.

@@Differentthings2006the problem is with vertical shaft engines with the geared slasher at low enough rpm the rod won’t get lubed. On vertical shaft splash lubed briggs opposed twins the top rod is so high from the slasher that at 1000 rpm it’s not getting lubed
@Differentthings2006

@@joshmanis9860 Yeah, I generally prefer working with horizontal shaft engines. They tend to be a little easier to work on and run.

@@joshmanis9860 I do a little bit of that work too, sadly, where I live, there's not much of a demand for mowers, because there's not a lot of grass. But I'll work on any small engine project I can get my hands on. :)

I wonder if offset grinding the flywheel key to retard timing would help slowing the idle down further?
@Differentthings2006
@Differentthings2006 8 месяцев назад
It's possible, I think the main limiting factor is the amount of suction that can be created in the venturi to suck up fuel, the slower the engine goes the less suction there is, so at a certain point it just can't even create enough low pressure to suck up any fuel. That's where fuel injection comes in to get you even slower, which is what original hit and miss engines had.
@chevy6794
@chevy6794 8 месяцев назад
@@Differentthings2006 I think that’s part of the problem anyways. The suction is there just more drawn out. Nothing a smaller carb or gas soaked rag can’t fix though. Retarding the timing is a really easy thing to try.
@jonathancorbett5917
@jonathancorbett5917 8 месяцев назад
So it needs a smaller carb to run slower
@Differentthings2006
@Differentthings2006 8 месяцев назад
@@jonathancorbett5917 That could help, because you would have higher air velocity through the venturi, which would create more section for the fuel.

Just don’t use the key and time it yourself the key isn’t holds the flywheel the tapered shaft is what holds it

I never claimed that it was, gives a similar sound effect, though. The title is meant to be a little goofy I did not mean for people to believe that I actually created a hit mis engine.
