Please do. I had a chance to make a short drive. It was a good feeling overall, nicely balanced car with somehow luxury touch. Mostly pluses, no dealing with plugin electricity charging, that is a plus for me. On minus side was really small rear luggage department, a price for place for battery. I am really waiting for your more detailed review that is always the best available on the net.

Gorazd Leben „really small rear luggage“? Really? Yes, there is a difference compared to the non-hybrid versions but not to much! (i think round about 100 l) 😊

I own a 2019 CRV Hybrid and can give more specifics for all you looking at this wonderful vehicle. I have watched many test reviews on this car and I can say for sure that they are all reviewed the same way so after watching this video there is no need to view anymore. One mistake they all have made is in regards to the drive modes. Let me just clear this up. There are 3 buttons & 4 drive modes with 1 mode being totally useless and another not so good. The drive modes are ECO, SPORT & EV mode. The ECO button switches the car between ECO & NORM mode when pressed again. I get the best gas mileage in NORM which I will describe below. The ECO mode is in my opinion, for city street traffic only. The EV mode is completely useless. I don’t even know why the CRV has this mode because any decent amount of acceleration and the car jumps out of EV and into NORM even with a fully charge battery. Maybe it's for city streets? Now for the SPORT mode. All reviewers make the same mistake and seem to think that SPORT modes means that when you “gun” the accelerator the car will act like a sports car & practically fly to top speed. They say they don’t notice much of a difference from the NORM mode and don’t care for it because it uses more fuel. I can tell you that they really aren’t using it correctly. And after using SPORT mode myself, I love it, but that’s when I have the opportunity to use it. SPORT mode is designed to be used on twisty, hilly, mountainous roads where extra torque is needed to power up & around bends and get up those steep hills without feeling like you’re in an under-powered hybrid. And believe me it works, and oh what fun! Now the fuel economy. The CRV’s computer always shows that I get better mpg than actuality. So here are real world figures from almost a year of driving. All figures in MPG are in U.S gallons. Mode: NORM: 36.75mpg+ (6.45L/100k) combo freeway & street. The CRV display showed 42mpg (5.6L/100K). Street only I got between 38mpg and my high of 43.07mpg (5.46L/100K). CRV display showed 47.04 (5L/100K). ECO: used with one full tank of fuel & it made the car feel very heavy and under-powered. It also only got 36.75mpg (6.4L/100K). So, it is my belief ECO=City. The lowest gas mileage I got was 35mpg (6.2L/100K) and that was probably because I was playing around with SPORT mode. So there you have it. Real world figures. For those looking at the Toyota RAV4. I have owned Toyota & loved my 2000 4-runner. I have been in the new RAV4 at the auto convention and if you are having trouble deciding between the two vehicles then it should come down to the feel. The RAV4 interior has the feel of lower quality, a bit plasticky, very much truck-like. Siting in the CRV you'll notice many refinements such as the soft upholstery & dash board. The console instrumentation seems less cluttered. Definitely feels like sitting in a sedan and not an SUV.

Once again a very interesting in depth review that covers so much information about this car. The BMW at 49:30 was shifting! This is a big change from a typical hybrid, but I wonder why some of the decisions /compromises have been made. If the battery was closer to say 10KwH capacity the car could do a sensible amount of driving on pure electric power - e.g. in town to remove the localized pollution. Possibly it would need to be PHEV to ensure the battery can be fully charged when needed. Alternatively it would seem like a possible platform for 3 types of drive train - 2KwH battery as currently supplied, PHEV variant with bigger battery and full BEV with say 64KwH battery. I know it's not that simple, and you have to find somewhere to put the batteries, but the concept of this car (ICE charges battery, electric motor drives car) looks like something that could lend itself to flexible configurations.

I wish Honda would make the rear 60/40 split seats so that the larger seat was on the right. It would make it easier to put longer and wider items that go all the way past the front seat when it is folded down. That way you can still have a passenger sit behind you.

Thomas thank you for your review. You help me to take in consideration this car, which finally I ordered.. Probably I' ll get on September 2020. I orders it without leather not-ventilated seats but AWD. It's quitter that's RAV4 (my second choice) and also in RAV4 it was for me difficult to get in and out (my head was hitting the roof, I'm not that tall, only 1,80 m). Yes the absence of the spare tyre is an issue, I hope the spare kit would do the trick. Keep up the good work, because the car journalists really help us choose a car( of course after a test drive of both cars)

Hi Thomas, let me help you out a bit with the engine, Hybrid System and difference to Toyota. The Honda i-MMD System in the CR-V is powered by an 2.0L LFA Atkinson-Cycle engine with i-VTEC and EVTC (electric varialbe timing control). This allows it to freely switch between Atkinson-Cycle and Otto-Cycle. (On side of Toyota the similar technology is called VVT-iW). Fuel injection is done via MPI (multi point injection). The thermal efficiency of the engine is 40% The Honda i-MMD System uses as you said two electric motors. How does it differ from Toyotas HSD System, that also uses two electric motors? The Honda i-MMD System depending on the driving situation switches between 100% serial hybrid mode (engine powers generator and generator powers electric motor for driving) to 100% parallel hybrid mode (engine directly powers the wheel and electric motor supports). The Toyota HSD System is power split system that is fixed roughly about 21% serial and 78% parallel. The hybrid batteries of both systems are pretty similar in capacity, they are intended as hybrid electric vehicle and not Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. As you wondered about the EV-Mode and engine directly mode. Bear in mind that it will change between full serial(EV, Hybrid) and full parallel(Engine) mode. In Parallel mode the electric motor will assist or brake the combustion engine to keep it in optimal operation condition. This is why you also can see EV and recuperation in full engine mode at times.

Thanks for a thorough review! I'm hoping this vehicle makes it to the US as a 2020 model as it strikes the right balance of features I'm looking for. Your test drive indicated 47 mpg US which is even better than the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid which is currently available for sale in the US. Our EPA has it rated at 40 mpg. The single fixed gear ratio gearbox is an interesting approach and seems like a good alternative to the CVT found in the RAV4. I drive in a hilly, mountainous area as well as on a generally flat terrain. Do you think this powertrain woud do well on steep hills? I currently drive a car with a V-6 engine which does not strain when climbing. I do hope that Honda updates the Infotainment System with the exact version found in the Honda Accord. I prefer the combination of physical buttons and the touch screen.

Great ride-along review. I enjoy watching the scenery roll by and your interest in what the hybrid system was doing was entertaining. The system in this CR-V is almost a "mild hybrid" system, which are not designed to operate on full EV mode, but since the Honda can go a short distance at low speed in EV mode they call it integrated motor assist. VW is also planning to add mild hybrid to many of its future cars. As we transition from full ICE power to pure EV, there are going to be a variety of mixtures along the way. I really expect to see a PHEV CR-V by 2021. The CR-V hybrid is going to be very competitive with the RAV4 hybrid, but Honda really needs to improve the touch screen. 🙂

no more 2.4l for U.S. at least, only the 1.5T & the 2.0 for the hybrid of course. Great vid of this; & while i like the car & even possibly would consider it over the 1.5T w/ CVT, two things r at issue: one is the durability of the system /parts for the long life/distance that many of us Americans use this type of car for. Two is that at least one tester/reviewer who used it for back/forth over a mere 2000foot, or 600m elevation rise/drop, got a meager mpg of around 26, which is reeeelly horrific frankly, vs the Rav4 hybrid which had no problem in same long loop, with its nearly 40mpg or even slightly higher. Very sad about this because otherwise, i think the CR V is the superior car, in every way. SOooo, would love to see more testing in varied terrains, etc, of both this & the Rav4 hybrid.

Great, comprehensive review. This is a very clever piece of automotive engineering. A very well designed cabin and boot (important for life!). Honda infotainment not the best. But, the battery is too small to offer significant low speed driving. I think it would be best with diesel as the generator and a 60km e range (10KW+?). But diesel is dead - thanks Wolfsburg. Also, too much thinking about what the car is doing. Cars need to be simpler for non enthusiasts (ie most people).

Very interesting concept, I believe that it has a bright future. No need for looking for available charging stations, no calculating how far will I go, when to charge, at the same time in city it drives on electricity. No brainer as we are used to. By the way, when pushing pedal to the metal, they say that you should remove leg for just a very short time and than push again and car program would understand what you are trying and it would lower revolutions a bit. Maybe you could check it?

Great and incredibly detailed review. This is by far the best car review channel in RU-vid, focusing on the car 100%. Now for this Honda CR-V hybrid. I went to do a test drive since I was curious about this "almost ev" engine combination. I have to say that the car feels... slow. Even in Sport mode, still slow. I even asked Honda and there won't be any other faster drive train coming up, disappointing honestly. The suspension, even in sport mode, is super soft and bouncy (tested in London where we have many large speed bumps), after a speed bump the car continues to bounce even at speeds of 20-22mph! How is that safe... Certainly not a car to have a Sport mode in. Also break/grip performance on wet is... well, not there really. You better drive carefully in the city with this car, does not feel safe to drive fast in it (within the speed limits). Steering wheel feels weird, also I found it thin. Some of the buttons like the steering wheel heating one feel incredibly cheap for a car of this price (top range and all options, AWD version, goes for £45k... in UK). And of course, no gears, just D. I found as well that just after switching on the engine it makes a weird humming noise, after driving in Ev for a while it disappears when stopping but the sound is really weird, like a bee. The car is good, fuel economy is amazing, spacious and very comfy but for a more sporty drive it's best to look elsewhere 👍🏻

Agreed. Also Ferdinand Porsche came up with some designs of an electric motor vehicle powered by batteries, additionally carrying an onboard petrol engine powering a genny to charge the batteries while underway - the 1903 Porsche-Lohner. His designs also used direct-drive hub motors. And the company built pure EV vehicles too, without the onboard petrol engine. Thanks Thomas for the fun ride and interesting demonstration of Honda's series hybrid interpretation using an electric motor drive. Greeting to Holger too!

Nice you said about the problems with the 1,5 engine. You getting improved & more informative review for your subscribers. I hope they will solve the gasoline oil-dilution, at next generation. Excess fuel vapors in Honda’s 1.5-liter engine aren’t burning off & diluting the engine’s oil. This raises the oil level, triggers warning lights, creates a terrible smell, and brings into question the prospect of long-term damage caused by the oil’s inability to properly protect the engine. Updates involve transmission & engine software. These changes will allow the engine to warm up quicker, reducing the possibility of unevaporated fuel collecting in the engine oil early in the drive cycle. Ignition timing, CVT control and air-conditioning operations are modified to help the engine warm up and retain heat. Honda is addressing similar problems in vehicles with 1.5L turbo engines in China and Canada. In China, Honda recalled 380.000 vehicles. As i read , owners in WARMER climates may notice normal variations in oil levels that do not necessarily represent a problem. At US ,400.000 CR-Vs & Civics were recalled , for software upgrade. My opinion is the problem will not be fixed by a simple software. This is the cheap way.. Its the design of the fuel injection system which makes it weak. Watch below how explains it , a good honest mechanic ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VIRBsn3xfoc.html About 2020 CR-V model, i beleive is not fully hybrid. Its like the system ,german cars use with the 42V battery for regeneration. Comparable with other hybrids : Fuel consumption of Honda, will be higher outside city at the moment combustion engine takes over directly. Isn't only from the higher weight. I would call it a light version of hybrid technology, specialized at regeneration. But its an interesting idea,in general. Will be reliable enough for us? Time will tell. My advise, if you wish to buy Honda with combustion engine : Avoid the 1,5 engine. Also choose one with manual transmission. More reliable & cheap to fix, for long life owning.

This type of propulsion will be the future of long-range/small battery road-vehicles. The electric drivetrain is by far cheaper than the common ones with gearboxes, clutch etc.. and an ICE that is out of the manual control by the stupidest around (driver) could be much cheaper, more efficient and having a longer lifespan the todays ICEs. The ICE has to have the Power output what is technical necessary (speed weight incline) and hasn't to be three times bigger because of the acceleration necessities to get up a Ramp on the highway, (and of cause for the lack of penis- length) Nissan got these since a few years in their e-Power cars, and we will see this in the future in every model in every size.
@christill
@christill 5 лет назад
At least they didn’t call it self charging. But to be fair to them, the engineering behind this hybrid concept does interest me just because it’s different. It’s kind of like Nissan e-Power. Totally ridiculous but interesting from an engineering point of view. I just think your closing comments about infrastructure and stuff are ridiculous. I mean we have such long ranges now on the affordable Kia and Hyundai cars especially. No one is going to be worried about charging with those cars. You’re talking like we’re still in 2012 with 80 mile Leafs and almost no rapid chargers.
@sgtc4538
@sgtc4538 5 лет назад
+Chris Till - sorry, I agree with Thomas's comments about infrastructure, they are very relevant. For a road trip in the UK, range anxiety, and the little talked about EV issue of "time anxiety", are big negative issues. Watch HubNut's RU-vid video posted a month ago about an 800 mile road trip in a Jaguar iPace. He had lots of issues with the charging infrastructure, and tailgating HGV's on motorways... Even if he's had the right app on his phone, it still would have been hairy. The same trip in a Tesla with its more reliable infrastructure may have been easier, but no easier than an ICE car. EV's for short local trips if you can charge at home are a different matter - we own an E-NV200 Combi and love it. Cheers.
@christill
@christill 5 лет назад
sgtc 4 Well I’m driving my short range Smart EQ to the zoo today. The first medium distance trip I’ve done in a while. And there are many rapid chargers on the route so I’m not concerned in the slightest. Should take a couple of charges. Unfortunately there’s no slow chargers at the Zoo. That would be ideal, but that’ll come eventually.
@sgtc4538
@sgtc4538 5 лет назад
Hi Chris - Enjoy the zoo, but I rest my case. The infrastructure for EV 'long road-trips', apart from perhaps in a Tesla, is inadequate unless you have lots of time, and a bit of luck (ie the charger you arrive at works). And that iPace that HubNut borrowed cost about £90K! Phew! Thomas was correct in his closing comments. And as you know, EV's will not save the planet. But I love them. The planet will survive. With or without us. Whether we survive is an is question.
@christill
@christill 5 лет назад
sgtc 4 Well unsurprisingly I disagree. But I do agree that EVs on their own aren’t the answer. Dutch style bicycle infrastructure and ebikes are more like what we need. Personal electric transport + self driving is the answer.
@sgtc4538
@sgtc4538 5 лет назад
Hi Chris - many thanks for your responses. Always good to discuss things. I don't know what the answer is. It's a much bigger question than I can comprehend. Bicycles? Not everyone can ride them (elderly, infirm, disabled) and they offer no weather protection... All good stuff! Many thanks. Cheers.
