So which would you have: Toyota Robust Accurate 4-wheel drive or Honda Compact Recreational-Vehicle? (And do you have any better acronym suggestions??)
NONE both are expensive and both aren't even all wheel drive and they're standard Japanese badges. Why bother when if you want a 2WD car it's much cheaper to get a hatchback, and if you want a 4WD car three words- Range Rover Evoque.
@@abirsanu There are plenty of desirable alternatives to these two cars. Range Rover Evoque is one of them, and actually it holds it's residual value really well but if you're so concerned about "reliability" also BMW has it's X series of proper 4X4s and Mercedes Benz has good 4X4s too. Nobody in their right mind would pay £30000+ for a Toyota or Honda. You wouldn't pay £80000 for a Nissan, Honda or Hyundai. These cars are expensive and don't make sense.
@@shanjanusman9974 "You wouldn't pay £80000 for a Nissan, Honda or Hyundai" Perhaps not in terms of an SUV, but the GT-R and NSX are good exceptions in terms of having mainstream badges on what are effectively supercars. As for BMW reliability, they don't really fare too well in surveys, and nor do Land Rover or Mercedes-Benz for that matter.
Honda’s current hybrid cars no longer use a CVT. They have 2 electric motors. One is connected to the engine and is used as a generator while the 2nd is connected to the wheels. The main purpose of the engine is to generate electricity, but in some situations such as high speed cruising, it is more efficient for the engine to power the tires. The compact engine-linked clutch delivers power from the engine to the tires enabling low-fuel consumption driving. When you press the accelerator to pass at highway speed, the clutch decouples the engine from the wheels and the engine acts as a generator to produce more power.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work all too well. In lower speed city driving it lacks the engine boost of power, so it uses the engine to charge the battery almost constantly. At speeds of around 50mph it switches to the direct engine drive and uncouples the electric motor, but because it’s a single gear that is ratioed for direct drive at 50mph, so at speeds above that, the engine revs quite high and the result us that it actually uses more petrol than the estimates say. Real world MPH is about 25% less than tested. If you just drive 50mph the entire time on motorways, it’s fantastic, but most don’t.
Thank you for explaining! It looks like Honda has smarter simpler hybrid system than Toyota. These videos are not technical enough, they say CVT when neither honda nor toyota has it. Toyota has a planetary power distributor; honda has none.
@@afcgeo882 You clearly have never owned one. My CR-v regularly goes full electric on the motorway at 70mph and easily delivers 50mpg plus in normal driving.
I have CRV for long, for me Honda does not touch the luxury or "tech gadgetd accessories" but more important the reliability and long term usability without any compromise. For me Honda is a long term friend you can trust, not a nice looking guy and a momentum one.
Really puzzled by these co2 and mpg figures. Any adverts I see show the co2 figures much higher (131 rav and 20 higher for the CRv) and mpg lower (48 rav and 42 crv). Any owners like to comment ?
Honda’s IMMD hybrid system is faster(in real test), smoother, and more efficient than Toyota hybrid system, which is admitted and be highly praised by toyota official
Eh -- I'm still not satisfied. Thank you for doing this review first! Nobody else is reviewing as CRV Hybrid has yet to be introduced in America. I like the CRV interior better. RAV4 does not offer leather at all. Honda offers leather. The console isn't that bad -- don't understand as I see no shiny anything. Manual seats are a downer.
Doug missing key info as usual. The Excel is the most well spec'd trim in the Rav4. The Sr is not in the CRV, so you can get a memory seat in the EX trim of the CRV. Also, the Rav4 has no through loading. Quite an important point for a family utility vehicle, which was not acknowledged.
No one should be using the standard infotainment systems. People should be using Apple Carplay or Android Auto bc they're infinitely better in both cars.
I don't believe the 1.5petrol turbo in the crv outperform the 2.5 naturally aspirated petrol in the rav4 & I think the battery range also out performs the crv.
Great video! The CRV has been more confortable than the RAV4 (engine refinement and suspension). Toyotajeff channel did a comparison about rav4-2019 vs rav4-2020 and the noise issue was targetted and he measured the differences which seem significant.
For fairly big cars these have terrible headroom. I could only sit in the RAV4 with the seat reclined to an uncomfortable position. The CR-V has slightly better headroom, as said in the video, but I still brushed the headlining with the seat reasonably reclined. We have a Honda Jazz. Its much smaller, and much lower, yet is MUCH more spacious for the driver.
I’ve not sat in the new RAV4, sat in the new crv yesterday. I’m 6ft 6 and could head room was abit better than average for me, back seat I could sit behind my driving position comfortably and head room was fine. Ended up buying it
In the U.S. versions, the RAV 4 has fake leather seats which is a big downside for many. You mentioned the RAV 4 and CRV are both leather but is the RAV 4 actually? I know it was a cost-cutting measure here and though not a major factor for some, it wouldn't be something I'd want to have when the Honda and others offer the real thing.
Have had 3 petrol CRVs, the last one - a 2015 auto had a few issues, the dealer stopped being a dealer ust a service outlet then gave the impression itwas still a service outlet but wasn't. Honda complaints dept took 3 attempts to get a reply, didn't want to get involved even though the garage gave the impression it was still Honda and had a BIG Honda badge on the invoice so its off to Toyota for me
A lot comes down to which is your closest dealership. Honda is 16 miles away Toyota is 300yds away. Toyota's warranty is far superior, on the off chance you should have any problems. The RAV 4 has Android Auto, for excellent voice controlled navigation.
Honda uses mechanical linkage for the AWD whereas Toyota's uses electric motor to power its rear wheels in AWD. If Toyota's batteries were drained, the SUV runs on 2 WD only.
What's in a name? Both hybrids can vary the ratio of engine speed to car speed continuously; so in that sense they have a "CVT." Neither has a pulley-based CVT, which is what can be unreliable. The RAV4's eCVT is mechanical; the rpms are split mechanically between a generator and the wheels. The "e" means that the electronics control this split. The CR-V has no mechanical transmission. The engine usually drives only the generator, and a similar split occurs entirely in electronics between the generator and the battery. In both cases, high revs occur under heavy loads because the engine is driving something else besides the wheels. And it seems nobody really understands EV mode. All of the energy ultimately comes from petrol. You aren't saving anything by running in EV, you are using excess energy generated earlier. and stored in the battery. The trick is, that it was generated more efficiently then. So the distance either SUV goes in EV mode is irrelevant; battery size only determines how much can be deferred.
what do you mean the crv interior is crap. That fake wood is so mich nicer than the bland black plastic of the rav4. Cr-v looks and feels alot more premium inside and overall. I hate the modern lazy desin where they cut the bonnet like before the grille, like in the rav4. It makes the grille loom as it was rushed and put together randomly, whereon the crv the bonnet lines flow more natural
Rav 4 styling is dreadful. Just hate square add on arches on any car, especially this one, looks like they forgot them and got a set out of the junk bin. Shame as its probably a good car, if it looked good would consider one.
If your leasing Go with whatever you got a better deal on. I don’t think you could go wrong. If you’re buying and plan on keeping in a while I’m sorry but you have to go to Toyota. Honda cannot keep an automatic or CVT transmission in their vehicles for the long-haul. You rarely ever see a Toyota CVT or auto transmission fail.Toyota also has been doing Hybrids longer .
No CVT on Honda, Honda’s current hybrid cars no longer use a CVT. They have 2 electric motors. One is connected to the engine and is used as a generator while the 2nd is connected to the wheels. That is why it is so much smoother to drive, just a 184hp electric motor driving the wheels. Probably less long term maintenance and maybe better reliability too.
I have a night vision problem. Which has stronger lights? as I can see, CRV has smaller front lights but unsure how other factors do. What’s your advice?
how tall are you? I am looking at getting one of these cars but in the end it depends on head room in the front and in the rear. My sons are 6 foot 3 inches. They don't want to be hitting the ceiling
I drove the rav and was blown away by its quietness and smoothness. Also test drive the Honda and was totally underwhelmed and found it very noisy at low speed in hybrid mode because of tyre noise ..I bought the rav 4 and I love it as it is so modern compared to the Honda which I known they have updated, but it has been around a long time and looks dated
Where is the Hyundai Tucson or Mazda CX-5 or Kia Sportage or Subaru Forester or Nissan Xtrail or Volkswagen Tiguan or Ford kuga or Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross or Peugeot 3008 or seat Ateca or Citroen c5 Aircross or Skoda Karoq
All the reviews i have seen by experts on RU-vid,give the gold medal to the RAV4.You are the only one that puts the HONDA above it.I respect your judgement but to be honest, the TOYOTA wins it for me.I have place an order for one with all the bells and whistles and i have driven the HONDA.Looks play a massive part and the HONDA is pretty bland in that department. Thanks for your review and look forward to your next one.
@@TR4zest it's only a bit and I mean a bit noisy on a motorway drive but you do have 220bhp which the Honda does not have plus the Prime is out with 306bhp if you can afford it. The only other Japanese car that came very close to the Rav4 was the Mazda Cx5.
CRV beat RAV4 in more reviews than just this What Car one. I know this because I am looking for a car for my wife (RAV4, CRV or a little older RX450h) and seen many of these reviews. Honda rides better and has more space. I won´t get into the looks department because the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The main thing is that you are happy with the car you bought, and why wouldn´t you be since this RAV4 is excellent.
Umm, " The Honda is faster" wrong. The Rav 4 0-62 8..4 seconds as against the Hondas 2wd 9.3 seconds. The RAV wins the emissions comparison as well. As a company car option, the RAV 4 (105mg) CRV (120mg) offers a worthwhile tax benefit. It also has a much bigger boot!
I have the Excel. It has more equipment than the dynamic. All you get is a black roof and black alloys on the dynamic. Excel gives heated steering wheel, heated wiper blades on windscreen, memory seats and headlight washers. Enjoy!
@@MrPeteJMc Hi thanks for this, I have been mulling this over, Excel has real leather as well. Which colour did you get. If we choose the Excel, Grey or maybe white are under consideration.
When I inquired about buying there was, and I think still is, a long wait world wide. I was lucky that a white excel had just come in and the original purchaser had cancelled the order. So I have a white one. I would have liked silver though. Love the car.
Just from the film at the start.Doesn't the Honda look a lot smaller than the Toyota? If i could also make a small statement and that is the Mazda CX 5 would beat these 2 hands down.
@@loganbarr853 I agree you should walk to the nearest brain specialist and have yours checked. Take a moment to see experts reviews on the CX5 and then come back and apologize.
TRY THE TOYOTA HIGHLANDER FOR IT"S EXCELLENT RELIABILITY AND ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM. HONDA MAKES THE PILOT WHICH IS RELIABLE TOO. THERE" ALSO THE SUBARU ASCENT (MY FAVORITE). All of which you will/should have $12,000-$15,000 left over.
Exactly Steve B, even after 20years of HSD car journalists keep calling it (wrongly) a CVT! It’s not a CVT, it’s a eCVT (electronic type continuous variable transmission) that works with planetary gears, everything a CVT doesn’t have! As What Car wants to be a reference, maybe they should push for more knowledgeable journalists...
I would get CrV over Rav4 any day. When there is this type of review, presenters should also point out the fact of average price on some parts, for instance, the fact that Rav4 has the most expensive clutch price to change, don't believe me? Google it.
Nobody notice that is difficult to get in and out from the RAV4? I test drive it today and I was surprise how low is the top of the car. I hat to low my head a lot and push the driver seat completely back to be able to get in! I m only 1.80 m tall.
Neither car looks that good CRV is plain and the RAV4 hideous I'd buy the Honda because it's more practical and comfortable both more important than looks.
I have recently purchased the same Cr-v as shown, sr 2wd in white. i brought it online,(sorry What car) a nervous experience due to the amount of money but with their already brilliant feedback, turned out great in the end. I managed to save £5500 on the car (with extra's) and £3300 by sorting out my own finance. I don't want car sales man blowing smoke up my bottom when saving that amount of money. I get around 42.3mpg from it and don't drive like a fairy, spends a lot of time in sports mode and does get a spanking lol. I owned a white 2013 sr 2.2 diesel before this (and a Honda Accord 2.2td tourer before that) which was far more economical. I really do like my Cr-v and is far better to drive than my old one. They both hold their value. It's just person preference at the end. If your looking for reliability, it doesn't matter which you buy. Yes you will have the usual tyres and brakes etc which cant be helped but that will by it. Not like bmw timing chains, turbos or service lights coming on, even though it was only in for a dealer service 6 weeks ago. Land Rover electrics play up. And who wants to pinch a Rav4 or Cr-v. Range Rover Evoque's go missing on a regular basis.
paul robinson Is the CRV noisy in normal driving (acceleration)? All the reviews pick up on how it’s really noisy when you accelerate or go up a hill but they tend to be flooring it.
@@richardw5179 No its quite. On the accelerator pedal, when its pressed to the floor, it has like a kickdown button you'd find on an auto. If you press the pedal down to the button, but not pressing it. its gives you round 80% power and is not that noisy. It's when you go to the floor and the power goes round to 100% that it gets a little noisy but how often will that happen. I've now sold that and guess what? brought another lol. Another SR in white but it has AWD and the Aero body styling pack. Handles a lot better than my old front wheel drive hybrid, feels a lot more planted on the road.
@@paulrobinson3528 Thank you for the reply. It was very helpful. I will have a test drive first but as I tend to lease my cars, the garage that the car would come from is normally many 100s of miles a way. I feel like I'm wasting my local dealers time. For that reason, I want to get an owner's perspective. I am looking at the SR but 2WD. White or Grey.
That's incorrect, both come with ECTV transmissions. The difference is a split differential that is electronic (Honda has a driveshaft to the rear). They are bulletproof transmissions and do not have any type of cone/pully system.
The pug will be very interesting inside and a better drive. But nobody buys a Toyota Hybrid for its excitement, they buy them for low running costs, high resale and astonishing reliability. Not reasons anybody ever cited for buying a Peugeot.
Honda is not really good at hybrid systems, it has a bad history in that while toyota has the better record in hybrid systems . What is your opinion about honda i-mmd hybrid system does it suffer from anything ? Any know manufacturing defects ?!
