Josh takes you step by step through the process of Replacing both the Radiator cooling fan and condenser fan on a Honda CRV without removing all the cooling hoses. These instructions will generally be the same for most modern vehicles but they are specific to the Honda CRV: 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006.

Here’s how I replaced the radiator fan on drivers side of my 2004 CRV. Removed top plastic cover of radiator, removed air intake snorkel, unhooked top radiator hose at radiator, removed battery and metal battery tray, was able to remove fan assembly in the area battery tray occupied. Did not have to remove bottom plastic shroud and the top metal support.

Thanks for this comment - that’s what I did! Although I did remove an additional bracket that attaches forward of the throttle linkage. It’s held by two 10mm head bolts and allows a little bit more wiggle room to get the fan out.

About to do this tomorrow! Did the condenser fan a few weeks ago and did not take that crossbar loose, just went in from below for those tricky clips on that fan. Hoping this one will be easier!

excellent instructor, nothing better than a RU-vid video where the instructor speaks CLEAR ENGLISH doesn't mumble,and doesn't talk about anything else then for the work at hand, testing the fans is very important, you don't want to assemble then find out you have a defective fan, this guy gets a 10 point rating, just by watching the way he handles his tools shows he's a pro.

Thank you for this video. Can’t say much that hasn’t already been said by others. Great step-by-step instructions. You made the process so much easier than I imagined it would be. Since your instructions are a great primer on how to get more access to the front engine bay, I managed to change my thermostat, PCV valve/hose, ATF filter, and fan switch in addition to the radiator fan. One word of warning to everyone else attempting this: be careful with any wiring. In moving the fans, I managed to rip apart that connector at around 8:12, resulting in my AC not working. The wire ripped straight out of the plastic connector and the connector was never seen again. Fortunately, I found a replacement online and was able to fix it.

This video is absolutely 100% amazing. THANK YOU. If you follow it step by step, you can do this entire thing in about three hours. Here are my bonus tips. 1) The most DANGEROUS part of the whole job is pulling the overflow hose off of the radiator cap. You need to do that with absolute care. If you break off that PLASTIC nipple, you'll need to replace the entire radiator too. I accidentally did this on our Toyota last week, but the cap elbow is replaceable ($25) on the Toyota, not so on the Honda. 2) Removing/re-attaching the under-engine skid shield will consume about 40% of this job time. Three fourths of my plastic clips broke. They were expensive at the local autoparts store ($2 per clip). 3) There are a couple of clips at the bottom of the condenser fan unit that have nothing to do with the condenser fan, yet they are a PAIN to remove. 4) If you can't slide the radiator fan over the transmission tube, climb under and manhandle the fan peg over it carefully. Treat all attachments to the radiator with kid gloves. 5) The attachment clip where the big wire bundle goes under the hood latch is hard to get with needle-nose pliers, but if you have hemostats, it's super easy. 6) Lastly, when putting the giant T-shaped frame member back, make sure the bottom of the T is on the correct side of the lower frame. I tightened all the bolts before realizing I'd got this one wrong and had to undo everything to move it half an inch (toward the engine). Note: Our local repair shop quoted this job at $500 including parts. That's not too bad considering the time it takes (about three hours). I assume Honda would be double that.

That’s wild my mechanic did it for 80$ without parts. Part costed me 67$ (just the radiator fan) the condenser was another 50$ but mine was t broken so 147$ if I wanted my guy to do it. I had my entire a/c system replaced for 500$ just two days ago. Pressure lines, vacuumed , compressor and condenser and unfortunately my radiator fan isn’t working

@@reflactor yeah I’m in New Jersey maybe that’s why, but yea they’re getting more expensive they actually just raised the prices of Freon the supply chain is all fudged up so they’re paying for it too unfortunately. He gave me a pretty fair price.

Excellent video. I watched several and started my project of replacing both fans, an alternator, and serpentine belt. Other videos just say “remove the wire” but I was left trying to figure out how to get them to release. Your video provided how the plugs work also which was very helpful.

I really appreciate this video. By watching it, I was able to fix my 2005 CR-V radiator fan and the condenser fan. I was also able to save about 40% by taking the hint toward the end of the video to only replace the motors instead of the whole fans.

@@alphanumeric1529 I checked the prices at AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts and found out one store had much cheaper motors than the other so I bought the cheaper ones. But I don't remember which one of the two stores. They are almost next to each other where I was shopping.

If you disconnect the ect you can use a paper clip and test the fans without ever starting the car , in the 03 it's a simple wiring and both fans will engage

Two days ago, I purchased a Harbor Freight telescoping magnet, part of a $450 haul... My kid was like that's too much money! I didn't buy anything expensive, but there were over 50 items on the receipt. Last night in my dimly lit garage, I removed a nut, and it slipped out of the socket the second it came off the bolt, one clink, no second clink of it hitting the floor... I've been lucky with car, everything I've dropped into the engine compartment has fallen through to the floor... so far. But not last night. Opened the packaging on the telescoping magnet, (after spending 20 minutes actually trying to find where the nut came to a rest) and in seconds, nut retrieved. I really don't know how I could have retrieved it without the telescoping magnet. So, bought two days ago, absolutely saved me last night, instant return on investment! GET A MAGNET ON A STICK! The HF magnet is straight, telescoping. It was a difficult to get it to the nut actually, as I could see the nut through a narrow crack of a narrow crack, I couldn't reach the nut through that line of sight, I had to go around the side of the engine, and blindly extend the magnet, feeling around to get it to the nut. A flexible magnet would have been better. Jack, where'd you buy your long flexible magnet?

@@jackbadabing Thanks man, I really appreciate that. I'll keep an eye out at Harbor Freight for the flexi magnet, no need to ebay/ship it, but I do really appreciate the offer. I too am getting too old to work on much. Changing the oil takes it out of me, just getting up, getting down, kneeling on a torn ligament in my knee I'm too poor to fix, ouch, that is insane pain. After this simple maintenance, my back is torture, my arm joints ache, and my hands... oh God, my hands. The next morning after even doing the oil, my fingers will be so swollen, they're like fat sausages and feel like someone took a dead blow mallet to them; if I try to close my fist too quickly or too strongly, my finger joints will pop out of their sockets, I have to open up my hand with the other hand and snap my finger bones back into their joints. In the morning before I get up, I have to softly and repeatedly clench my fists and feet, pumping the fluid out of the swollen tissue around my joints, so they don't dislocate. I'm only middle aged, but I'm high mileage, and due to a disease, I've been running without oil for about 30 years. Every joint is worn out, metal on metal. The failing body is designed, I think, to remove our fear of death, instead, to make us long for it. I tell all the young people I know, enjoy your body now, because when you're in your 80's, getting out of bed is going to be so painful it is like getting t-boned at 45 mph. Every morning! Who'd want to cling to life if that were your life? So, I'm with you on that one. But without vehicles, mortgage doesn't get paid, without mortgage, we're on the street. We just adopted a young lady, so now we have an extra kid to provide for. Can't have them living on the street, so I clench my jaw, tighten my gut and power through... until I can't move anymore, then through the night as my wife sleeps, beg God to take me, until it's time to get up and do it again... God bless!

Fantastic video, really helped me replace both fans today. However, in the struggle to get the fans out, I pulled a wire out of the harness that is clipped to the bottom of the condenser fan. Now the a/c doesn't blow cold. Do you know what the harness clipped into the bottom of the condenser fan goes to/could this be my problem? If so, I'll just replace the harness with a jumper cable. I’m afraid I couldn’t say for sure without it in front of me but a lot of times wiring from other parts of the engine get clipped to the fan shrouds and can get broken when you don’t know they are there. But I would definitely say try to reconnect the broken wire and go from there! There’s often a small single wire that goes to the ac compressor, make sure that’s there and intact!

You don't need to unplug the radiator. You just need to jump the relay port with a probe wire (ground is always grounded positive is jumped to bypass the relay). Pro tip next time

Hey man! AMAZING VIDEO. I like'd and sub'd. I have some quick questions. So both my fans are not coming on. I unplugged the top connector to the fan and multimetered that and got 14.6 volts, which is more then the 12 volts I am supposed to get. Is that bad? Is there another connector I need to meter as well? I assume seeing that they are getting power means that the fans should be turning on so it is either bad fans now or bad relays or fuses. HOW DO I TEST THE FUSES AND RELAYS before replacing the fans themselves with your video?

if you are getting 14v at the fan plug (which is fine) then your fan is bad. It means power is getting thru your fuses and relays properly. Yeah. Our CRV has been overheating through the last half of summer, mostly when in stop and go traffic. So much other stuff going on in our life (just adopted a young lady desperately in need of help, and everything else), let it ride. On the last hot day of the summer, while my wife was driving home, the AC compressor exploded like a bomb in the engine compartment. I think it destroyed the crankshaft seal, as the engine compartment was covered in motor oil from the oil pouring out of the crankshaft seal (I think) onto the serpentine belt, and then was flung all throughout the engine compartment, and onto the passenger tire and passenger wheel break shroud, all along the underside of the car back to the back passenger tire and breaks. Oil EVERYWHERE. When I checked, the engine oil was really low, still above the min mark, though the engine sat for a long time before I checked its level. The engine may have blown, I don't know at this point. It still runs, but there are some clacking/clinking noises. When I took off all of the front underside, and tire well trim (took way longer than I thought it would, almost every black trim tab thingy broke on removal...), I found jagged triangular aluminum shards over an inch in size, and progressively smaller shards all the way down to a fine aluminum powder... all over the engine compartment. I didn't see the powdered aluminum at first. But upon really close inspection all throughout the engine compartment, there are bright little dots here and there. I'm concerned that these can short sensors, connectors, wire harnesses and other unimaginable things. I spent the entire day, until 2 am last night, just cleaning oil off the engine and various wire bundles, hoses, suspension components, and body frame members. The compressor's explosion was so violent, it blew the oil dipstick out of the engine. I shudder when I wonder if aluminum shards entered the engine through the dipstick hole... I *THINK* this was all caused by the radiator and ac fans both not working. Is there a way to diagnose if it is the fans themselves, the relays, or the switches BEFORE taking out and replacing these fans, it looks like a real PITA (though, I have all the trim off already because the AC died from the black death, I'm sure there are aluminum shards and powder all throughout the ac system. I can't just put a new compressor in, it'd blow in a week because of those shards in the system. So, the complete AC system replacement cost may be a significant portion of the blue book value of the CRV... AND the engine/crankshaft who knows what else, may have also been damaged from the explosion... this may have totaled the car, a car I hoped to put an additional 100,000 miles on... sad times).

When the car is cold and the ac is off normally neither fan is on. Turn on the ac and the condenser fan will immediately kick on (if your ac system is functioning properly). Also if you can locate your condenser (which sits sandwiched to your radiator, and looks like a small radiator) the fan that blows on it is your condenser fan. Or worst-case scenario look up the parts online and match them to what you have in the car

Yes with modern electronics all kinds of wacky stuff can happen but normally the fan that comes on with ac is the condenser fan, the other fan (you have two right?) is controlled by the temp sensor and only comes on when engine hits certain temperature. Hard to say, they’re are many parts to the ac system. Sometimes you need to start by getting the systems professionally evacuated and refilled so you can see if low coolant is the problem

my crv condenser fan is not working but the radiator fan is. do i have to replace both or just the condenser. my ac is blowing cool but NOT cold air. could the condenser fan not working cause the air to not be cold?

Unsure of your last question, but ac will not function properly without condenser fan! Often you can buy the fans separately BUT often it’s the same price to buy an assembly with both fans. Just look at parts and prices, but you do have options.

Just replace both. If one has gone bad, the other will follow soon. On this vehicle they work in tandem, if you turn on A/C both fans turn on, if car engine warms up, both fans turn on. So here in Florida, they run 95% of the time.

I have a honda CRV 2007; It has 2 fans ; Fan-1 on the driver seat side & Fan-2 on the passenger side ;; my driver seat side Fan (FAn-1) is not working when I start AC & I drive almost 35 kms;; is it normal? Fan-2 is always running (Even AC on / off & car in neutral position); Is it normal? Fan-1 will work only if the engine coolant is getting hooter? otherwise it will not work? Since I do not have the car in front of me anymore, I can’t remember which fan is the AC fan and which is the radiator fan. The radiator fan comes on when the engine gets up to operating temperature. The AC fan comes on when the air-conditioning system is operating, it will also come on if the engine gets too hot

Thanks for a great video. That clip at the bottom of the condenser fan is driving me crazy! My side cutter won't do it and I neglected to raise the car before I started so I have even less room down there. I'm stuck at this point: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-53qhIfgZPYs.html

Took me about three hours, but I had a heck of a time with the under-engine skid guard (most of the clips broke) and I had to undo the T-frame twice. Without this great video, it would've taken me an entire day (and that's optimistic).
