Its the first video I've uploaded in 2022 and its taken far too long to make but hopefully the delays are over and I'll be back on a weekly schedule, Before I go on though please check out my Patron page, link below.

So in todays episode I have quite a few jobs to get through, the first of which being stripping all the aluminum parts down that need to be sent out for anodizing so that they arrive back in time for me to rebuild and film them this was simple enough as it was only the wheels and rear brake that needed stripping, so it was a simple case of pulling the wheel bearings, removing the tyres and tubes from the rims and then removing all the spokes. For the rear brake that was simple too as it was only the brake shoes and pivot to remove from the casing.
These parts were then bundled up and sent out for anodising and while they are away I fully restored the swing arm making full use of my new vapor blasting set up, but I'm getting ahead of myself. My first job was to pull it all apart which was simple enough as its only nuts, bolts and bearings to press out.
when the arm and pivot were all stripped i set about cleaning them up in the vapor blaster this leaves them with a "as new" finish for most of the parts that was the end but for the swing arm to restore the OEM look i needed to remove all the defects i could sensible remove and then i had to give the flat surfaces a slight polish so that i could reinstate the brushed effect that Honda used on these arms.
After that it was simply a case of re-plating all the hardware and them putting it all back together again in reverse order and of course not forgetting to apply the awesome new PRO-LINK decal.
And that wraps up this episode.
So I hope you will enjoy the first episode of the series and ill see you all again very soon,
Enjoy

3D printing for the chain guide, as long as you can get the old one back in 1 piece I am sure someone could print it
@RRCRestoration
@RRCRestoration 2 года назад
Yeah that's my problem there isn't enough of the old one left to get accurate dimensions :( but it is looking like i will have to go down the 3d printed route

@@RRCRestoration The swing arm came out like new! What grit did you sand the swing arm with and which pads did you use to polish? Did you use any compound? Also, did you coat it after or is it the raw finish? Thanks in advance! 🍻 I'm looking to the same thing to mtb frames in the future

It's so nice to see a restoration channel in which the person knows how to paint. Paint can ruin all the hard work, and you do it right. Not long ago, I started watching some guy trying to rebuild an old z1000, and when he got to the paint job, the first thing he did was take the completely assembled rear shock and just sprayed red paint on it, over the spring, the rod, all of it. He did the same with everything without bothering to take it apart first, even the engine. I think that's considered a crime against humanity.

Possibly the rare chain guide parts could be 3D scanned & printed in nylon. Sometimes it's the only realistic option for rare parts. Vapour Blasters deliver amazing results.

Mill a block of delrin or nylon perhaps?
@KickF
@KickF 2 года назад
@@davidgibson5756 yea would much rather find a machine shop that got delrin or nylon to do it, no offence to 3D printer fans, but knowing how amazing the bike will become in the end, and if there was to be a 3D printed plastic piece on it, well a milled piece of delrin / nylon would just look better.

Great episode. I'm a vapor honer as well and it's a revolutionary tool. One piece of advice I can offer, if I may be so bold, is to make sure your parts are already as clean as possible before honing. The VH is a honing tool, not a cleaning tool. If you try and hone greasy parts, eventually your media will become stained with grease and you'll end up with a blotchy finish. The key to a good finish is clean media and a clean part. For some truly spectacular results, try cleaning your parts, then do a very light dry blast, and then hone. The finish will absolutely glow. Of course, dry blasting is only recommended on parts that are able to withstand it. It's a little more labor intensive, but it can be an amazing difference. Also, check out some of the vapor honing pages on facebook...some great knowledge there.

The brushed finish on that beautifully polished swingarm is a work of art. It's so simple, yet so effective for the visual impact. I love attention to details like that. The same can be said for how beautifully you restored the bolts and nuts, colour and all. Honda loves a good bare-metal frame & swingarm on their high end sportbikes. So does Aprilia with their mirror finish. Always had a soft spot for it, and kinda miss that kind of flair on the Yamaha and KTM I owned.
