Got a chance to meet Eric last week while I happened to be in the area and had a tire leaking. Great guy, super accommodating even though I caught him right as he was closing up. Thanks so much for taking care of the tire and being a cool guy to talk to for a few minutes! Love your channel keep these videos coming! I find them super helpful and enjoyable to watch!
Yes, Eric, that was brilliant. I would not have considered that scenario. I'll have to keep that in the back of my mind. Thanks for all the great videos!
@@DeweyCheatumNHoweLLC They gave me some of that when I was in the hospital for 5 days last November after surgery for an incarcerated inguinal hernia. I'll let you look that one up, but trust me: It's no fun!! Anyhow, I made it through half the glass of that stuff and told the nurse "No more, and never again!"
You omitted one option re: the cat, the jerks of the world chopping off converters in the dark of night. I myself was a victim while my SUV was in a shop parking lot waiting for service the next day.
This one is special - needs a micron dust flush using a left-handed smoke shifter. Tiring work - I'd recommend some good ole snipe prepared medium rare for dinner after.
"look at the comment section going wild, when those wires get all twisted" meanwhile in the comment section "right in the bunghole" he ... Hehe ... Hehehe. But seriously, every single video of SMA seriously make my day. The type of humour combined with the knowledge sharing is so addictive!
A few years back a friend brought me a 10 yr old cr-v that was in Syracuse area and later southern Fl. Couldn’t believe how much corrosion it had on everything underneath. First issue was getting the wheels to come off the hubs. Then the caliper pins where nearly frozen. Put all new brake components on and got it all working again. The rust belt is so hard on vehicles. Love the videos and your teaching.
I had to replace an O2 sensor on a 2005 Altima. The customer had another shop weld the cat a year prior, and the mechanic did NOT put anti-sieze on the O2 sensor; yes, he put it in dry. A year later when I went to change it, it took all of the threads with it.
Every new o2 sensor I've gotten has had anti-sieze already on it new out of the box. If the threads were like Eric just shown, and the tech jammed it in...
Old mechanics trick warm up exhaust use brake fluid around the area were you use the 22mm wrench let sit a little bit brakes free and leaves the treads Everytime
My good friend, John B had the "plan C" happen to him in his 1973 Corvette. I was following him to Corvettes at Carlisle and kept seeing blue smoke from the exhaust. We stopped and checked engine oil a few times but it was always full. We never considered the master cylinder until the brakes failed. He was able to bring it to a safe stop but sure enough the master cylinder was empty. We replaced it and no more exhaust smoke.
I've had countless hours of empathy and soft skills training. None of those give you an easy way to tell a customer they made a silly mistake. "Somehow the car was out of brake juice. I've seen this happen before when mice drink the brake juice when you weren't paying attention. I've also seen it happen once when someone did a brake job and didn't refill the brake juice. Pretty sure this was a mouse incident." ??
HA! I'm going to have to use that one sometime. Might be worth asking if they've seen any dead mice in the general vicinity of the "scene of the crime" lol
I bought a 2003 CR-V (new) and failed to truly appreciate its ergonomics when I owned it. Thanks to the handbrake, dash shifter, and fold down center tray, my 6'5" frame fit nicely in it without banging knees against massive hard plastic center consoles that did nothing but suck up space. Also, oddly, I did notice that it had a very small brake fluid reservoir (as does my other Honda). I should have kept it as my daily, but I was short on parking at the time.
It all starts with a gander. Pretty soon you're pointing to things over yonder. As you approach middle age, you start telling people to set a spell. Before you know it, you're describing the antics of young people as chicanery and shenanigans.
I really like how you show both common sense mechanical tests and investigations along with computer support to get a better picture of the problems going on. Unfortunately some newer mechanics rely solely on computer analysis which doesnt always give you the whole story. I also try to get as much history from the customer as I can. I like to solve the problem, not pass it on. Please keep teaching as you go. Great content!
Hey there SMA. There's a guy on the tubes that says you can just wash out the catalytic converter and it will work like new. His name is Scotty Kilmer. Have you heard of him? Seriously though, I hate emission laws but as a person who grew up during the 60's and 70's I can tell you they have made a big improvement on the quality of the air we breath. I was but a child when the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland OH caught fire from all the chemicals dumped it combined with the ever present smog in that city.
Man I'm still amazed that yall work on cars and trucks so rusty I live and work in the Great State of Georgia and I cringe and wanna cry for my mommy when we get a rusty car from the north.... hats off!
I have seen Honda CRV's of this vintage that had a rusty brake line seeping at a junction block located on the inside of the drivers frame rail just below the p/steering pinion housing. This line runs from the junction block over to the abs valve body. I am also in the rusty northeast and have seem this more that once.
Update? did you get the converter job, you gonna make video of replacement? Would love to see it. The best part of your videos is watching you work on fixing the problem. Not that there's ever a bad part to your vids. Take care hope you and your family are safe and well!!!!
Eric, I watch your video's for many reasons. I see your talented hands use the same tools that I have but in many different ways I that I'd never thought of. So I'm also learning how to do a better job. Then I hear language and terms that are destined to enhance my vocabulary. Terms like PRNY or phrases like "Dryer than a popcorn fart!" "And, your video's are fun to watch. Thanks for sharing!
The VSA and the red brake light are on because of low brake fluid. You have to reset the code even after you top off the reservoir. Common issues for that are because of leaking rear brake calipers. Honda and Acura seeing as I worked for Honda now work at Acura lol. God....that thing is crusty.......
Rear calipers are pretty common on any hondas with the turn in rotors. I’ve also had one those where the lines rotted out at the valve on the side of the frame by the rack
@@wdkirkes62 You're very welcome. Eric got lucky and the lights all went out when he topped off the brake fluid. I don't know if he cleared DTCs but yeah it'll throw all sorts of lights with low brake fluid I don't know why they do that
@@gregblau8082 it's hit or miss with calipers. It's the people that don't take care of their cars they don't wash their cars with all the salt and garbage on the roads.
@@Gearhead2286 i worked for a company that sold and rented a fleet of about 200 Hondas mostly early 00’s from auctions between NY and PA. The Accord and CRV rears were probably at least 99% of the calipers we replaced. It really was an easy job once you figure out the few issues they all have. Following scheduled maintenance makes an unbelievable difference on those cars
That level of rust grosses me out. I crawled under my son's 78 Ford Pickup last week here in California and it was practically without rust. My condolences to you New Yorkers.
I used to have an '04 CR-V just like that. Base model with 5 speed stick and no ABS or VSA. It was a total rot-box like that one too. I thankfully totaled it and insurance gave me more money than it was worth.
Speaking of constipation, I just left the doc today for that, that's what the physician told me today, "u got a plug on down the line"...Mrs. "O" Beef enchirito was my favorite from Taco Smell
Had a 2005 Chevy Cobalt with the enormous 2.2 Liter with a clogged CAT not long ago. They drove it so hard, it got sooo hot it caught the plastic rear bumper cover on fire!! It was a first for me!! The back pressure smoked the clutch somehow. Pry cuz the customer was abusing the poor girl. Haha. Anyways it needed a new cat, rear bumper cover and clutch. Then it ran like a top!! Thanks for the video my friend. I Always learn something from an SMA VIDYA!
Also possible the converter was just simply stolen a time or 2, pretty common on these, love the video, never seen nor have I even thought to hook a pressure gauge up to a o2 bung to check pressure!!!!
I’d love to know the outcome of your conversation with the customer. 1) Did someone forget to fill the reservoir? 2) Is the engine dumping something into the catalytic converter? I like closure - just sayin.
Even being from Cleveland, it still amazes me how so many of the cars that come in look EXACTLY like the footage of the Titanic after being underwater for almost a century.
"Dryer than a popcorn fart" - I come for the knowledge you convey and stay for the humor. Another great video. Still sopping up the mouthful of water I spit out. Also, on the way to the garage to check the brake fluid level in my CR-V.
during the Fred Flintstone days when we had wooden wrenches we used a vacuum gauge to determine back pressure the 70 GM double wall exhaust pipes the inner wall would collapse .
You crack me up! I like the way you did that diagnosis. That car is great from the door handles up. It's in only when you go to get in and your foot goes to thru the floor that you have to worry. That happened to my mom's Toyota years ago. We had a floor mat floor until she got a new car.
AZ. native here, Traveled to Ferndale N.y. first time ever in upstate. My God that is beautiful country in the summer. Too far from Eric O's shop to visit but sure thought about it. a busy man ill bet anyway.
Ferndale NY? That's not upstate, not even close, it's less than 80 miles from the city. Ferndale is mostly weekend house and cottages for people who live in the city and a few people who commute to work in the city. Eric O. is another 3++ hours if the State Police in Liberty don't stop you for speeding.
Love your vids!!! I’m always left wondering what your customer decides to do or what the history was? Let us know or maybe a monthly recap of what happened to some of these fixes:). Stay safe!!
Each video is a short mystery novel. Riveting narration. I feel a bit smarter as a tech when I watch, and *sometimes* I feel a bit more stoopid. HA! Thank you, Eric!
@@crabcake43011 it wasn't that terrible. The worst part is taking the hydro boost off and on from the drivers foot well. Had to get some swively ratchets, but not awful. Make sure you do the proper bleeding procedure for the power steering (jack up the front with the truck off, go lock to lock 40 times, checking for bubbles and full level on the power steering dipstick)
@@crabcake43011 you got this! Lemmie know if you run into any trouble!. I recommend crows foot flare nut wrenches for the power steering pump hydraulic connections
Thank you Eric for telling us what you would say to the customer about the plugged Catalyst (a plugged cat just needs some Ducolax! 8-)) Most mechanics wouldn't bother with helping the customer decide what to do. Unless you haven't told us about it, you don't have a used car lot to sell them a car from! 8-))
I've picked up a few advanced troubleshooting technics watching your channel the last few years, came in handy today thanks! (Electrical issue not a plugged cat 😂)
Your ending would of been far more interesting if you made it after you had spoken to the customer. Thanks for all the entertainment. Keep up the great work. I hope Mrs O, the kids and the pets are all doing well also.
Haha “wires getting twisted” I don’t think it would harm anything considering the little amount of threads that exist on an O2 sensor. But I do find it really annoying trying to thread it in and the pigtail is whacking you in the face or if it is plugged in then it unscrews itself, it’s such a “ughhhhhhh” moment
Eric O you have to get one of those fancy scan tools that Scotty K. has. It checks Cat. right from tool. Only thing is you have to wave arms while using it!!!
Watched the converter diagnostic. I didn't understand what was going on. Later on I went for a hike and ran into this girl, said her name was golden locks or something with honey in her hair and a cell phone in her pouch. She told me she was subed with SMA too and had a similar problem not to long ago. I understand now. I had had it backwards.
Hello. I own a 2005 Honda CRV SE with 180K miles. I was astounded when I saw how badly that vehicle was rusted. I live in Florida and cannot imagine that much rust. Eric, you should move down here and work on cars.
I had an ‘03 CR-V, burning oil with a bad cat. I think the CARB cat was going to be $2,500 installed. Sold it out of state to a student instead. It’’ll be “out to pasture” for a few years then off to the scrap yard.
Immodium is for when you've got the runs.... don't take it unless you've had to make several bathroom trips, though. If you take it when all you've got is an upset tummy rather than something more serious, you won't poop for days.
This is why, once in a while, you should pop the hood and check your levels... And dont top it off, things like brake fluid shouldn't go anywhere. Also, the K24's, when you change the oil too late, start burning oil because the pistonrings get stuck.
The amount of rust on the underside is incredible, our car has nearly 300K on it and zero rust other then surface, so glad they don't do emissions here ,,Liked vid
I have the same CR-V myself. Got it really cheap being that it has 252,000 miles on it. No rust, cherry interior, and the best damn money I've ever spent! Runs and drives like new, but with that mileage everyone knows a Honda is just barely broke in.
