In this video I demonstrate how to change the rear brake pads on our 2013 Honda CR-V AWD. The procedure will be exactly the same for model years 2012-2016, 2WD and AWD.
This is a relatively simple job that almost anyone can tackle as long as you have the required tools. This will only cost you about $40, and take 30-60 minutes to complete. My local Honda dealer wanted $299 to change just the rear pads!
I decided to use Akebono ceramic pads which I (and many others) have had great luck with on many other vehicles. I changed the front pads at 60k miles with Akebono ACT1089. The original rear pads lasted just over 90k miles before getting to the wear indicators, and I replace them in this video with the ACT1086 pads. I did not need to resurface or replace the rotors as there was no vibration/pulsing when applying the brakes.
Remember to also follow the manufacturer's recommendations for brake pad bed-in procedure. (Akebono recommends 400-500 miles of moderate driving to bed-in.) This is particularly important when installing new pads and leaving your existing rotor alone. A proper bed-in will not only give you the highest stopping power, but also ensure that there is an even layer of pad material deposited onto your rotor. This will prevent the pulsing and vibration which is commonly mistaken for warped rotors. If you are interested in learning more, Stoptech has an excellent white paper on this topic:
www.stoptech.co...
If you want to flush your brake fluid at the same time, I've also created a video for that process:

Great video. I'm not a car guy. I know where the gas and windshield wiper fluids go, but anything beyond that would be a stretch for me. My rear brakes had been grinding and I watched your video and went for it. Bought the needed tools and viewed a second video for rotors and finally got my hands dirty. Five hours later I was driving around breaking in my new brakes and rotors. Thanks Tim!!!!

Thanks Tim ! Your video is very attention to detail. Clear me confuse on on slider pins, and slider pads position. Wait for your video on front brake job ! Note: There is confusing on front brake: the slider pins has revert order at top and bottom: on driver side, the pin with rubber sleeve on the top, the pin with flat body at bottom. On front brake passenger side, the pin with rubber sleeve is on bottom, the pin with flat body is on top. Because booth caliper bracket on front brake are the same. (No left side and right side like the calipers) and the holes use for slider pin with rubber sleeve has diameter lager. When install on left and right side they become revert order

Thanks for the to the point video. Am disappointed w/the design of the caliper assy as the right rear inside lining was down to nothing but the outer pad was like new. The drivier's side had more wear on the inner pad but was not as worn.
@timwong3532
@timwong3532 6 лет назад
Be sure to check your slide pins. If they are pitted or corroded, they will tend to stick and cause more inner pad wear. If they are simply dirty looking, clean them off well (as shown in the video), and re-apply a generous amount of high-temp brake grease (e.g. CRC brake grease, or Sil-Glyde). Do not use petroleum-based lubricants near the slide pins because it will deteriorate the rubber dust boots.

Only use grease made for brakes like silgyde. Silicon based can handle the heat and won't break down the rubber. Silglyde won't dry out and harden like some brands over time ymmv. The rear pads last a long time - like two or three sets of front pads. So lube is critical. When he pulled the pins you see wet grease and a small nub on the tip as extra. That's how you want to do it and that was a good grease like silglyde. Pull a bunch of rear pads and you will see half the pins stiff and seizing or hopelessly stuck. Use sylglide.

@rfehr613

You need to reverse steps 28 & 29 or you'll have brake fluid all over your engine bay
@pjpan6326
@pjpan6326 4 года назад
Is this true? I've seen quite a few videos with the same order. When you press the pedal, the level of the brake fluid should go down, so it should not spill over to the engine bay. I never did a pad replacement myself. Just watched a lot of such videos as a preparation for my first pads replacement.
@rfehr613
@rfehr613 4 года назад
@@pjpan6326 the braking system works on pressure. When you press the pedal, the system is trying to increase pressure but it can't because the caps off. It will spray everywhere. Trust me, I've done it by mistake before. It's a pain in the ass to cleanup cause brake fluid is so caustic.

@STePHeN320_12 3 года назад
Yes put the cap on before pumping the brakes
@gfriedman99
@gfriedman99 3 года назад
Its only a problem if u added fluid. Because new pads will cause fluid to overflow if you added fluid after removing old pads. The cap does nothing to retain hydraulic pressure
@rfehr613
@rfehr613 3 года назад
@@gfriedman99 that's completely incorrect. The cap absolutely does maintain pressure. It must. That's how all hydraulic systems work, whether it's car brakes, a boom for a manlift, or any other hydraulic system. It's a pressurized system. Not only have I sprayed break fluid all over my engine bay before, I've also blown a line on a snooper doing bridge inspection. Talk about terrifying. You can raise the level in the master cylinder by very lightly pressing the brake while monitoring the level, but I guarantee you if you "pump" the brakes with the cap off you will have a mess on your hands.

No, you don't need to replace the rears at the same time, but always do left/right pairs together. Rear brakes wear slower than fronts for most cars, but the pads are often smaller and thinner as well so they should be inspected at the same time. Replace when they get to the wear grooves.
