Troubleshooting engine crank, no start.
Years later, I think this was actually due to a failing relay (?) or something electrical to do with main relay circuit. It still exhibits this behavior.
While trying to hunt the issue down, found this odd fuel-system pressure regulation behavior which I think was unrelated, but was good to get taken care of.
notes from service history
8/1/2020 ODO 210,000 Wondered about occasional difficult cold starts. Extended cold-start cranking. Battery tests OK. Haynes' book recommended checking fuel system pressure. Gauge borrowed from O’Reilly’s. Fuel pressure shoots immediately up to 40+ when key turned to “ON” from no fuel pressure. Pump OK? However, disconnecting the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator reveals a very sluggish reaction in fuel system pressure. I think it needs a new Fuel Pressure Regulator. Ordered along with an oil filter and drain plug gasket.
i miss this car so much. d-series honda (1995 del sol)

and yet you didn't record the new readings of pressure........did they rise, stay the same?

Did you measure the pressure after the replacement?

Basically what was the symptom that made you test the fuel pressure regulator? And what happened after you replaced it ?
@16mmDJ
@16mmDJ Год назад
There wasn't actually a definite symptom. I just noticed it when trying to sort out why the car had trouble starting sometimes. I think that was potentially due to a sticky main relay, though cleaning that didn't change it for long, either. This car had a security system and a cutout switch, I don't really remember what else I tried 😅

Sadly I can't source FPRs in Europe for d-series. Any ideas?

Really? Try Ebay perhaps. Where in Europe? I'll pin this comment so hopefully others see.

Is it ok to leave the hose off? I noticed on my 2000 civic ex the idle is way too low with the hose attached. I removed it from the intake side and now it idles high but no longer stalls out like it did.

Did replacing fuel pressure regulator help any? I am chasing down poor MPG on 1997 Civic LX. Same test as you did shows no change in fuel pressure is I disconnect (and pinch) vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator. Manual says "pressure should go up". Other than poor MPGs (25) and somewhat high idle ~ 900RPM I do not experience any issues. I did all the usual checks - adjusted timing, cleaned throttle body and IACV, replaced PCV, ran Lucas injector cleaner through the system. Compression test shows: Cylinder/PSI: 4/145, 3/150, 2/165, 1/178. Difference between cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 is 33 PSI. Kind of high. I am out of ideas. Was thinking to ask you before shelling $100 for fuel pressure regulator.

Im experiencing a no start in mine for some reason. Im not sure if the regulator is bad. I put a rebuilt engine in it like 5 or 6 weeks ago. It turns over but wont start. It needed a new fuel pump which I replaced so I know it is getting fuel to it. turns over but wont start. It almost starts but does not. Any ideas what my problem is?

@@city2city100 I figured out what the problem was. It was not he fuel pressure regulator. Spark plug wires on mine were actually wrong. Now im getting a real mild whining noise from the timing cover and cant quite figure out what it is. If I run it without the timing cover It dont do it at all. I tried it with no drive belts installed and it still makes a whining noise.

Where can I get that book

Good question. This is a Chilton's Haynes manual. I go to their website and search for my model year of car... so in this case 1995 Honda Civic brought up the book "Chilton 30200". I then stick "Chilton 30200" into Ebay and buy the best looking option :-) I personally find the Haynes books easier to organize my brain around, but both the Chiltons and the Haynes are excellent resources.
