Buy a decent used vehicle (say £15 000) and keep for much longer and you can use the difference saved to cover fuel and maintenance.. then it's yours to sell.. not just hand back.. why tie yourself down to these payment schemes.. just to have some shiny metal to keep up with the neighbors?

The problem is second hand cars are so expensive it's a huge gamble. Buy a heap of rubbish or something with problems and you're stuck with it, the days of a cheap run around or cheap second hand car have vanished. A friend of mine purchased a second hand car from a dealer, had major problems with it, the warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on and he ended up spending several thousands on not one but two replacement engines and even then it wasn't right, ended up selling it at a huge loss. The market has changed a lot, there is no easy solution to owning a car anymore. Even the second hand market is controlled by just a few companies. Granted you can always buy privately but it's a risk given the higher prices involved.
