In this test I drained both generators completely out of gas then added only 32oz to each tank.
Let's see how long they will run with a 1000 watts load.
(HONDA EU7000)
The Honda EU7000iS is a quiet inverter generator with a rated wattage of 5500 W and a starting wattage of 7000 W.
The Honda EU7000iS houses a 389 cc Honda GX390 EFI OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 5500W along with a peak wattage of 7000W. In addition, the device is parallel capable, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.
The inverter generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 52 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a quiet suburb). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the EU7000iS can also be remotely started (via the My Generator App).
The Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system enhances the engine's reliability, lowers fuel consumption, improves startup, reduces servicing, boosts stale fuel resistance, and offers better altitude adaptability.
With a full tank, the EU7000iS can operate for up to 16 hours (fuel consumption around 0.32 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 5.1 gallons.
(POWERHORSE 7500I)
The Powerhorse 7500i is a quiet and powerful inverter generator with a rated wattage of 6500 W and a starting wattage of 7500 W.
The Powerhorse 7500i's engine, 420 cc OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120/240V. It provides a running wattage of 6500W and reaches a peak wattage of 7500W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit(opens in a new tab) not included), its power may be increased if linked to a second compatible unit.
The inverter generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 55 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a conversation at home).
With a full tank, the 7500i can operate for up to 16 hours (fuel consumption around 0.41 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons.

Gavin, great test/comparison 👍 - Love your no-nonsense ☝️ approach - You sir have a new subscriber. I own the earlier (carbureted) Honda EM7000is. Purchased it in 2004 and have used the generator after several hurricanes 🌀 hit South Florida since then. Fortunately, we did not get hit this week in Miami by hurricane Ian. Anyways, I am very happy with my Honda. It will run 14 hours on 5.1 gallon tank with all the connected 120v load in my home. I use a Cutler Hammer/Briggs & Stratton 7500 watt transfer switch to handle the load distribution. Back in 2004 the Honda cost me $3,500.

Hi Gavin, I just subscribed and enjoy your videos, thank you. I like to get your thoughts on how to best stock up for fuel for a short-term and long-term power outage. I live in Florida, and we have both hurricanes and no name storms to contend with. I do not live in an evacuation zone and I'm fortunate to live in an area that is close to a hospital and underground power lines. This past hurricane experience, we did not lose power. But learn from the past and prepare for the future is what I always say. Thank you so much!

Hey Juan Thanks for subscribing. I think the best way you should store fuel especially gas is having all your containers and your gas treatment ready. Usually when a storm is coming, we usually have a week in advance warning that’s when I store my fuel. Propane has a 20 to 30 year shelf life so you don’t have to worry about storing propane. Always store your generator, completely free of gas.

I use a 6 gallon steel boat outboard motor tank with a nozzle valve and primer bulb to fill my portable equipment. The nozzle looks like a miniature gas station nozzle. The tank has a vent valve in the sealed gas cap. It stays primed after initial priming so all you do is put the tank above the device and let gravity do the pumping.

Great test! I think 1000W was a good light load for this experiment, as it really shows how the fuel injection burns less fuel. The fact that the Honda ran about 50% longer is amazing! Not only are you saving fuel, but the emissions are probably much less (less unburned fuel) and the engine is burning cleaner with less carbon buildup, so longer life. It's still amazing to me, how much bigger in size, the Powerhorse is than the Honda. And the Honda is big!

Regarding the kill-a-watt not fitting. I have a short VERY heavy gauge cable I use sometimes. Its on ly maybe a foot long. But it has 1 male plug on one side to lug into the outlet and on the other end it has a splitter to have 3 outlets. You could plug something like that into the Honda and the kill-a-watt into that with the lights plugged into it. I know it's an old video. But that little short extension cord shouldn't affect the results for anything you test in the future. Good video. I'm about to buy one of the Hondas by the way.

Excellent review. I wonder what your neighborhood thinks of all the noise? Let's crudely compare the options... Honda 7000, $5K, Powerhorse 7500i $2.5K. Efficiency and longevity probably goes to the Honda. Powerhorse wins on the 50amp plug, Db, and price. For intermittent use to power a house, I would probably go with two Powerhouses and a combiner box.
@GeneratorReviews

Like a modern car, it has a barometric sensor, oxygen sensor, crankcase position sensor, throttle position sensor, exhaust manifold temperature sensor, and generator control unit (GCU). I am not surprised that it can milk every ounce of energy out of the fuel it is given. The only thing missing is an OBD2 interface so you can hookup a scan tool to see the real time performance of the engine like fuel trim, rpm, timing advance, etc.

I have an older no-name Chinese 5500 watt (6000 surge), *non inverter* generator. I just ran a test a few weeks ago. I used 32 ounces (1 qt) of fuel. I used two 1500 w heat guns on high. So 3000 of 5500 watts is a 55% load. It ran just for 23 minutes and a few seconds. Anyway, double the price for the Honda, I'd have to stay with the other options. If you have Nat Gas, (conversion kit) you don;'t have to run all over the place finding large quanties of gasoline for extended outage. @matthewwiemken7293

Well, one of these engines uses a fuel pump in the gas tank to provide pressure for the injection system while the other uses gravity. the Powerhorse will use all it's fuel minus small amount left in carb bowl while the Honda will stop running when the fuel pump stops providing pressure to the injector. The best way to do this test is to run both generators for the same amount of time and measure what was used:) I would expect the Honda to use less fuel because the generator can better optimize itself for altitude.

Pretty much all of them can be converted you just have to find the right kit.

Hondas are one of the overall best thats made. You got to pay for quality
@antronx7
@antronx7 Год назад
So that's 2 kWh per gal for Powerhorse and 2.8 kWh/gal for Honda. That is way short of typical small generator efficiency of 4 kWh/gal. You need to try these at 50% rated load or 3500 watts instead of 15% load.
@randybobandy9828
@randybobandy9828 Год назад
That's because they ran at such a low load. A generator will run most efficient when running close to 100%.

Test is not 100% reliable because not every tank empties the same. So one generator could run out of fuel sooner than the other because of tank design and not because of fuel consumption.
@GeneratorReviews
@GeneratorReviews Год назад
And you’ll get a better fuel efficiency with a full tank, but like I said, in the video, this is not rocket science, entertainment purposes, only just have fun with it life is short.😊👊🏾

So.... the Honda would burn around .32 gal/hr for 16 hours. That surely would be based on 25% load or less. I'd guess at 50% load, it would be more like .5 gal/hr or more. At 75% load -guessing .7-.8 gal/hr. If you ran 50% load for 8 of 24 hours, thats up around 4 gal/hr. If you had no line power for 5 days. would be 40 gallons of gas if math is correct. That's eight gas cans of 5 gal each. Someone ✔✔ the math. 40 gallons x $5/gal=$200 $40 day? After a major event like Florida's most recent hurricane, where would you find gasoline, much less 40 gallons and have to store it.

Big mistake! Empty gas tank is a great BOMB full of gas/air mixture! Let's store them like we do a prop airplane. Every plane is ALWAYS stored with FULL tanks for great reason, to prevent your empty tank from breathing. Night comes. Empty tank air shrinks and sucks in moist air thru vent. The cold tank all night causes the dew air to condense on the tank into droplets which slide down the walls rusting the inside of the tank and collecting at the outlet to your engine. Day comes, temp rises pushing air out the vent. Night comes and the dew air gets sucked in to repeat the process. Water gets sucked into the plane engine causing a CRASH!! Full tanks can't breathe. Gas in a full tank doesn't breathe out the light aromatics so the gas NEVER GOES BAD! No magic potions are required like STABIL to keep the gas fresh. Full tanks contain NO EXPLOSIVE MIXTURES! No air in the tank...no burning! ALWAYS store planes/cars/gas-powered anything FULL TO THE LINE.

Significantly different situation, but I owned an EFI Polaris Sportsman and an carb Polaris Sportsman. The only difference was EFI. 2003 vs 2003.5 model year. Bought them a few months apart. The EFI had way more power, way more throttle resolution, and way, way more range. Carburetors are the stupidest caveman tech. Welcome to 1930!
@GeneratorReviews
@GeneratorReviews Год назад
The carburetors are pretty much calibrated for middle of the road performance the the EFI recalibrates as the load changes gives you a streamline operation (welcome to 1930)😅
