BINGO: We have a winner. Bruce Harvey. He guessed the the smoked wings were installed upside down by the side rads. Thanks for playing everyone.
In this video I start the fork seal replacement and other items on the list of things to do. Applies to 2001-2005 Wings

Came across this channel when I was checking out goldwings. I must say I love the passion not just for the bike but the craftsmanship they way you like this done how they should be. Being a mechanic myself for 20 + can relate to lot of things. What a bike she's in good hands 🙌 👌

Thank you very much. We appreciate your kind comments. I’ve been doing this for a very long time and one thing I’ve learned is to do everything right the first time because shortcuts never work out well. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

Paul , you are one of the best!!!!. I wish you were close so I can get you to do the maintenance on my gold wing. I’m afraid it won’t get done right at a dealer. Anyway take care

Wrenching your own ride is one thing...but tough on someone who doesn't have the skills or interest. Based on what you've demonstrated in this video, to have the (proper) service done by a dealer would cost a pretty penny. Parts are one thing, labour is another. I always try to do my own stuff - but I recognize quite quickly now (due to past experience) what should be done by a dealer or better still, a trusted mechanic. Like pizza parlours and dentists - they may provide similar service but they are never identical. As always, I've learned something new with your video - that I will not take on the task of changing the air filter and/or fork oil in a Gold Wing. If I had one. In another life. ;)

+Bryan Walker Good points Bryan. I'm always hesitant to show to much of this type of repair because I'm afraid someone who isn't qualified might try it and do it wrong and be injured. For me personally I enjoyed the repair. I've been looking forward to it for some time but with the shop being busy I couldn't get to it. We put aside a few days to do it and now it's done. Today the shop will be back in full swing so it's time to get back to the boring paying the bills stuff lol.

Beautiful bike Paul! That's the best looking and probably best maintained Wing I've ever seen. Last bike I've owned was a 550-4 Honda. Bought one new when they first came out. Didn't take long to figure out it wasn't big enough. But it was the last one for me. I've ridden since then but not owned. Ridden/drove our oldest son's HD 100 year anniversary edition, road glide I think it was called. The big one. He had a woman T- bone him and totaled it out. He's still recuperating but back to work. Stay safe and God Bless. Levi~~

That anti-dive valve it the first thing I disabled. Locking the compression of the fork under braking is dangerous when coming to a stop on a rough surface, the wheel will skip across the bumps plus it is jarring. I replaced the fork seals on my previous wing and while there I replaced all the bushings also. It's good to change the brake fluid every two years. Fortunately on motorcycles the reservoir has an expanding diaphragm and the fluid is not exposed to the atmosphere so moisture should not be to much of a problem. The front fork on a Goldwing seemed like an after thought for Honda, it's not near rigid enough even with a fork brace. It looks like they had a bunch of left over Honda 750 forks and just slapped them on the wing... Finally a change in 2018...

If I remember right the upper bushing does not slide up and down in the fork leg, it's fixed in the fork tube and the fork leg slides up and down inside of it. So it would be the inside of the upper bushing and the outside of the lower bushing that you would check for wear...

Paul, what you identify as the secondary rear master is in fact the primary master for the rear. The secondary is on the left side of the front wheel. Also noticed you poured the oil in with the spring installed. I clean and dry the spring, collapse the tube, add the oil and measure the distance from top of tube down to oil surface. Almost always have to draw some off, the fill volume Honda gives gets you close. Then put the dry spring and caps on. Antibiotics in food products is a factory in bacterial resistance to antibiotics, Not good.

If you put aftermarket fork springs on the bike with a heavier gauge spring or a longer spring do you have to reduce the amount of oil in the fork because of the bigger displacement caused by the aftermarket spring ?

Just noticed on my 2008 Wing while cleaning it today I noticed wetness around the Fork Seal on left side. Do you recommend doing both while at it or just repairing the one that needs attention? Have also had others suggest installing an "anti dive " shim as well. Your thoughts? Great vid and beautiful bike you have.
@7863348
@7863348 8 лет назад
+MemphisMike Mike considering the left side is the hardest of the two to do I'd do both of them. The left side is fast to do. Besides that you'll have all fresh new fork oil in there as well. As I advised in the video, change out the two bushings on each side as well. I've done the anti dive shim placement in the past and always ended up removing it again because I didn't like the spongy feel of the front end when it was in there. Remember. The anti dive is there for a reason. Ride safe man.

+Paul ShortThanks for responding Paul. I just noticed my 2008 Extended Warranty runs thru 09/03/2016. I am wondering if this is an item that is covered by warranty/honda protection plan? Otherwise...I have buddies from the riding group ready to help in a week on this repair! Just can't stomach having to pay dealer rates for this job!
@7863348
@7863348 8 лет назад
+MemphisMike I would say theres a good chance it's covered but the problem is I highly doubt they'll do the two forks or even change the slider bushings. Most warranties will cover the defective part and that's it. If it is under warranty check with the dealers service department and see exactly what they will do on this repair.

Why are the upper bushings worn on the outside of the bushing where there is no movement from the fork tubes sliding up and down. Who’s upper bushings do not slide up and down in the bore of the lower fork leg..The surface I would be concerned with ware is the INSIDE of the upper bushing that the fork tube is constantly sliding thru..Have you ever put a micrometer to measure the actual thickness of a used, vs, new bushing.. if the bushing is wearing that much, which I have my doubts about, then Shirley the lower fork leg is wearing also because that is soft aluminum. Is there a tolerance spec for the bore of the lower fork leg??. that blackened work oil I’m sure is loaded with aluminum from the lower fork leg bore.. have you ever cleaned aluminum with a clean white rag? It turns black almost instantly. Maybe it would be a good idea for suspension manufacturers to plate the bore of the fork leg with chrome or nikasil the way moto guzzi has coated its cylinder bores for decades

How much do you have to maintain that little bell and how much oil does the bell take, ha ha? Take care mrbluenun
@7863348
@7863348 8 лет назад
+mrbluenun You just simply add bell demon fluid to it every 15.000 km's and drive on. I've never seen a road demon on the bike. Never. ;)

At 3:50 it appears that you are saying the bushings copper side is worn. It is the black Teflon coating on both the guide bushing and lower slider tube bushing that you should check. The copper on the upper bushing rests in its stationary home the aluminum tube and on the slider tube it rests against its stationary home on the tube. Neither of these are working parts of the bushings. The black Teflon that is the working part that wears on both bushings. Honda recommends they be replaced when a certain percentage of the Teflon is worn off enough to allow copper to show through. Maybe I just misunderstand what you said but still a nice video.
@7863348
@7863348 7 лет назад
To sum it up. I replaced all bushing, both on the fork and the two in the fork tubes. Also replaced seals and guides. If you see the fork oil as black as the oil was in ours it gets the full meal deal. It's not expensive to replace but labour intensive so I rule on the side of caution.
@gatorwing6231

I also replace all bushing and seals as the whole kit is just about $30 from WS. I did my 2012 today for the third time :-)

You might want to consider disabling the anti dive. I did. Much better ride and less stress on the seal on that fork.

Hi Paul. Just curious as to why you didnt show any of the actual fork installation in this video?
@7863348
@7863348 5 лет назад
It’s all because these videos don’t get a lot of views because of there length. Adding every detail and making them longer means even less views. To be honest, GoldWing videos are hardly worth doing that’s why we concentrate more on tractor videos.

Ic. That’s too bad as I really enjoyed them. . I got to do my fork seals compliments Baie Comeau road. However had a beautiful few days of riding in Quebec. Parts on order.
@7863348
@7863348 5 лет назад
Quebec is a beautiful province. I traveled that area back in the day when we lived in Labrador City. Make sure when you get your seals/dust seals you order two fork bushings with them. The bushings get a lot of wear and most guys leave them in only to have their new seals fail prematurely. Also consider disabling your anti dive. It’s the main cause of your seal failing and it makes the bike ride very rough.
@toddburden6305

Fork bushings coming with the kit. How do you disable it? Mechanically or electrically? Thanks for your prompt replies by the way as well. Terry Holmes living back down your area now. Retired from Churchill!!

Lol. Terry and I are great friends. He was in the shop yesterday tormenting me 😂The antidive can be disabled by placing a shim under the anti dive valve. Look for anti dive shim on eBay. Fast and easy to do.

Road demon's suck . . . Did everything to make this years motorcycle trip perfect, bought a new goldwing, new (to me) tow behind motorcycle trailer, all the gear and the 1st day out picked up a nail in my rear tire. Thankfully the TPMS on the new Goldwing alerted me to the problem and I was able to pull over and do a partial roadside repair.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sKdNoELi1Bc.html

+PAUL GOLDWING Well you and I both had the other bike yet we ended up with a Wing. I think it's a good solid choice. You have a great set up. Built for those long rides. The nail in the tire isn't good but do what I've done. I carry a small portable vehicle compressor and a tire plug kit and your tires are tubeless so it's an easy repair. You need to scare off those road demon's. Do you have a bell? They don't work if you buy them. They need to be given to you to work. Let me know if you need one;). Don't throw away the tire with the plug. Put a patch/plug unit in it and it will outlast the tire. We're doing them here all summer long. Have a great day my friend.
