I always put Anti-seize on the plug threads so they can't ever take out the treads on the head.
@chriscaliente5033
@chriscaliente5033 4 года назад
Anti -seize is good if your spark plugs have black threads and you change the plugs every blue moon.
@bubblehead7680
@bubblehead7680 4 года назад
@@chriscaliente5033 I think anti-seize is good whenever you change plugs. I always do it regardless of time between changes.

@@chriscaliente5033 That's not the point Chris. You are installing a steel threaded part into aluminum heads and you also have water or coolant with rain water and washing water making a perfect recipe for electrolysis. Remember that you have 2 different metals with electricity. Dye-electric grease is fine for the plug wire boots, but useless on the threads. Without anti-seize on the plug threads, you are taking a chance on the threads gauling and if that happens, it will be time for a new head and deep pockets.

HondaGoldwingGL1800 FYI to eliminate the problems associated with spark plugs seizing to the cylinder head, most spark plug manufacturers now apply a metal plating to the threads of new spark plugs. The coating is good for a single installation. If you remove the spark plug and reinstall it, you must apply anti-seize during the re-installation. If the spark plug has a black oxide finish, it has NOT been coated at the factory and you should apply a very small amount of anti-seize to the threads. NGK spark plugs are manufactured with a trivalent plating. The spark plugs display a silver or chrome finish on the threads. The trivalent plating reduces corrosion resistance from moisture and chemicals. The trivalent coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs should be installed DRY, WITHOUT anti-seize.

@@chriscaliente5033 Years ago I worked in a motorcycle repair shop. I saw my share of plugs seized into heads, and striping out the threads of the head. No fun telling a customer that their head required a Helicoil, and a costly head removal in order to do the repair properly. I also was into ultralight aircraft. Again the same problem showed up. The solution we used was to always put anti-seize on the plug threads. Never had an issue with any plug treads treated with the anti-seize. As the anti-seize is harmless to even a coated plug I will still continue to use it. IT IS CHEAP INSURANCE. I religiously use it on any spark plug I install, car, motorcycle, and even my lawn mower. Can't hurt, but could definitely make the difference in protecting the head. It only takes one little spot on a spark plug thread to seize to start thread damage occurring, and damage the rest of the threads as it is removed.

I know 13ft/lbs is the plug tightening spec, but it looks dangerously tight, I was expecting the thread to strip (I'm a qualified mechanic and have changed hundreds of spark plugs).

Excellent video Chris. My 04 Wing is due for a valve check. I know they're shim and bucket style so it's quite involved. Wondering if you have a video for this or might know a link ? Also would like to know if you burn Premium or Regular since my manual recommends at least 87 Octane and so far hasn't affected performance. Thx again.

Chris. Thanks for another great video (didn't know that frequent of plug replacement!). I have an Off-Topic Question I was hoping you could answer. I have Sena Evo headsets for me and passenger. I purchased them just before you obtained your Cardo. I know you are experienced with Sena and now Cardo. I want to purchase headsets for both my adult children for Christmas this year. They both wear fixed full-face Shoei helmets with no headsets. Which headset(s) would you recommend I purchase? They will primarily be using them to communicate with just one rider to just one other rider, not large groups. Maybe a total (ever) of four bikes at a time with headsets of which one will be mine with the Sena Evo. Usually, it will be just my two kids riding together without passengers each on their own bike and within a hundred to two hundred yards (max) from each other. They are both in their 20's so use of their iPhones will be important. Let me know your thoughts as I value your opinion as truthful and unbiased. Thanks!
@chriscaliente5033
@chriscaliente5033 4 года назад
The Sena 20s /EVO will work fine for a small group specially if everyone has the exact same headset, but for a larger group I would prefer the Cardo, this is why I have both but you should be find with a 20s.

I thought the gap was .039 to .043
@chriscaliente5033

I stated the spark plug gap using Millimeter not Inches so in otherwords (1.0 - 1.1mm) is the exact same measurement as (0.039 -0.043) inch.
