Lots of inventions...came along by trial and error, or even mistakes. Great job...brings back good memories of my younger days making rail buggies. Lots of mods too....
You took on a very tough project and I bet there were points that made you question the whole thing. It seems you have knowledge above the average mechanic that helped you make smart part choices. The most valuable asset you have is your buddies and I hear a lot of laughter which makes me believe you all had fun which is great to have while doing tough work. I always wanted to have a bug with a rear mounted V8 using a kit like Kelmark once produced. Unfortunately my buddies were not into cars that much. I bet your proud of your work and you deserve a lot of credit even to take the project on. Nice work done by all!!
I did a very similar build on my channel years back. I way over thought the shift linkage as well but ended up doing the exact same thing you did and it worked great. I only used the stock water pump to send the coolant all the way to the front and it worked fine. I would recommend having 2 coolant system reservoirs and caps at the two high points just to keep air from forming in either one.
Thanks for your insights on this swap. I’m working a K24 swap right now. Your frame fab is a good basis for guidance. We’ll be looking closely at the height of the install like you mentioned.
This project is awesome, man. The engine sitting lower in the frame will actually probably be a blessing in disguise because the low center of gravity will help with handling.
Sick. I have owned hondas all my life. Ive had an 88 civic my first car. And 93 del sol, 90 crx, another 93 del sol, a 91 civic, a 98 Integra, 02 civic, 03 crv, and an 03 pilot. I currently have a 65 bug and would love to do a swap lime this! Well done!!!!! Cant wait to see more of it!!!
Absolutely the greatest, love it, a real grand achievement .I had an old split rear window bug looked cool as, it had little arms that shot out of the door frame and glowed orange when you engaged the indicators, so weird an goofy
I have owned a69 n 70 I just wish that I could have put them up n reworked them but I like the way you have hotrodded that gem.much success on the build.im enjoying it.peace
I admire all the work, not exactly my taste, but man great enthusiasm, I'm a Ford guy we like easy stuff, I'm too lazy to change my 62 Fairlane tailight bulb!
Hey, you have c.f. joints, why not move the axles forward? I would normally hate a build like this as I love the old bugs, having had several, but this is really impressive. Best of luck!
Drake Orion - was about to say similar; the rear wheels are too far back. Great build though - it’s funny how any engine fitted to a Bug always ‘sounds’ like a bug 😁
Love DIY, shooting from the hip. Good show You Guys!! I've got a 56 Bug ovalwindow choptop body on a 72 Bug pan(constant camber IRS)with a 67 911S transaxle, 4 whl. cross drilled disc brakes & the front suspension is a hand fabbed chrome-moly subframe locating via heim joints hand fabbed chrome-moly tubular a-arms with coil-overs, with a racing rack( turn & a half lock to lock). I'm hanging a Lexus/Toyota 4.0 ltr. 4 cam aluminum V8(1UZFE)off the Porsche' t-axle. Adaptor plate, flywheel & beefed up Porsche' clutch (228 mm pressure plate/285 ft lb clutch disc)all courtesy of KEP, Kennedy Engineered Products in Palmdale, Ca. They'll build almost any adapt, flywheel, clutch pkg for mating almost any engine to VW/Porsche transaxles one could ask for. If You cut up another Bug, consider using a Super Beetle pan,,,those MacPherson strut front ends are superior ride/handling over the double beam torsion bar trailing arm rigs, in my opinion.
Blade Cutter ... I bought an adapter from KEP in about 1973 and put a Buick V-6 on the 1960 Bug transmission. Ended up putting solid transmission mounts after ripping apart several sets. Raced a Buick Wildcat with a 430 engine and best we could do was dead Eve side by side ... Top end pegged out on the Wildcat @ 130 + mph ... Thanks for bringing me back guys ...
🎩👍 In the early seventies we were using KEP adapt kits hanging B.O.P. (Buick, Olds, Pontiac)aluminum 215 V-8s off Bug & Bus transaxles. The late model buses with CV joints/constant camber IRS(1968 & later) we would swap the Bus trans units for Bug trans units, for the taller gear ratios. A very successful combo, run down the freeway @ 80-85 getting 25 mpg. You said You hung the V-6 off a 1960 T-axle? 1960 were split case trans bodies, non-synchro 1st gear, at least my 60 was. 1961 was the first year of tunnel type trans bodies w/synchronized 1st gear. Peace
Yes mine was a '60 model. I worked at a junkyard and we had the v-6 but no aluminum v-8s or I would have used that. I vaguely remember but I think you are right about the split case on my transmission. I was young, dumb and broke ... didn't put antifreeze in because I couldn't get the cooling system right and ended up cracking the block. Put a 1600 engine back in, drove it for a few more years and sold it to a friend so I could buy a 1970 bus which I sold in 1980 ... Both were still running strong at that time ... Good Memories
Yeah, the old days were good. Cars were affordable. Speaking of Buick V-6's, in 73 I bought a clean, straight 65 Buick Special, w/ V-6 off a used car lot for $125.00. Only hockey was a cracked windshield...$35.00 to replace...pounded that car for many road trip miles. In 75 I bought a 69 Dodge Charger for $550.00 off a used car lot & got a ton of fun miles with it. topped it off with a fun day at an autocross, soon after sold the car to a used car lot for $350.00. Many more good deals like that back then. Now it's 5 grand for used POS ring ding junk.
Very cool, also, I'd say the engine being low like that is a good thing, since it'll keep your center of gravity nice and low. Cool build guys, real cool.
Great work. Love the wrench brackets. With a project like this with nothing to lose, Don't know what you are doing is very cool work. I'm learning from your build with a v6 front wheel drive engine from a 1998 Acura I have. Have a dozen old beetles to try it in. I hydrodip and Cerakote also.
good shit man, I also own a 74 bug & have it posted on my channel, beetles are very eye catching & unique if I say so my myself. Can’t wait to see the progress on your bug ^^
from what ive seen you guys did over kill on the frame and added some over weight, i built a 1927 tee box delivery hotrod with a chevy 350 with 350 H.P. and built my frame with 2 x 3 x 1/8 thickness and had the car 34 years with no problems and it beat corvetts and porches in a race.
Man this things awesome. Mark my words when you go to pfi for tune Brent's gonna make a vid of this thing and I'll bet kyle will too your channel is gonna blow up man. This car is gonna be sick.
I been brainstorming about a build similar to this, I recently found out about the Memminger Roadster which is the closest to what I've been dreaming about. But I'm a broke college kid so Imma have to wait till next fall to make it happen. Gj on this thing tho really cool.
I'm curious as to why you kept the Honda transmission. You could have used a VW or a reversed Subaru transaxle and not had to permanently change the Bug.
Donald Coakley I have a friend that builds those professionally, we’re talking like $5k trans builds, and they still have a hard time handling more than 400-500. A stock Gsr trans will take 500 all day
What did you do about the transmission? I don't understand how you moved a front engine to the rear and linked up the transmission designed for a front engine. Did you have to order a special trans-axl that links with the Honda engine?
Man that’s awsome I’ve always wondered what it would take to jam a front wheel drive engine and trans in the backnove a Vw. It is something I had hope to do one day in life really glad to finally run across and example after all my googleing.
Literally just made a U off the linkage and sent it forward. This video is a several months old! You should check out the newer videos! It’s come a long ways!
"We're not fabricators." Builds custom GSR Beetle. Hey buddy, guess what. You are indeed a fabricator. If you think the fact that it "took you so long" makes you an amatuer, my buddy sent his 85 SS Monte Carlo in to be built. He was told six months three years ago.
Honda S2000 cluster would be cool. Some Empi skinnies. And a cool split bug type exhaust, and in the future, Turbo! Go to YoungStatic on RU-vid for cool fabrication knowledge .
don't put skinnies up front if you gonna drive on road , their only for straight line drag racers. Bugs are already too light at front and weight transfer to front about 80% when braking so front discs are best upgrade for performance in real world.
Hardly anything, 2-300 in metal, parted out the integra so the whole swap only ended up costing me $120. Check out the newer video of this! We’re getting crazy!
Honestly I think you guys should have done it a different way and should have put the engine in the front with a truck transmission and drive line running down the center of the Pan with the radiator in the back Everyone puts a 8 cylinder in the front why not a 4 cylinder You probably would have got the stance you wanted out of the car and not used all that metal FYI , it would have looked much better too you wouldn't have to drill holes in the front hood And it would look pretty much original.
@@GARAGEIdiotS yeah I just watched some of the progress ..... You've done an amazing amount of work , you should be proud !!!! . My best effort was engine rebuilding and swapping 7mgte and turbo into an old Supra... 85 - 400 hp and repainting it .
I just dont really like how you went about the radiator. I would have worked with different radiators, hidden air inlets and heat extractors. The holes on the hood give it away way too cheaply.
