The Honda HF1211 is the smallest mower in the ride on range. This example is over 10 years old, and it has two issues - a slow puncture and a weak gearbox.
The Honda HF1211 is manufactured for Honda by Castelgarden, which makes a similar machine with different engines for other manufacturers;
Atco Rider 28H
Mountfield 1328H
Are two examples but there are probably more which may have different engines.
The Honda version has the GXV340, others use different engines, stiga for example.
GXV340 uses 10W-30 oil or 5W-30 for colder climates.
Oil capacity 1.1 litres
Spark plug is NGK BPR6ES or Denso W20EPR-U.
Spark plug gap 0.7-0.8mm
Service intervals
Service Air cleaner element - 50hrs
Change engine oil - 100hours (basically every year)
Check and adjust spark plug - 100hrs
Clean fuel strainer cup - 100hrs
Check carburettor adjustment - 200hrs
Check and adjust valve clearance- 300hours
Replace spark plug - 300hrs
As this mower is new to me, I’m going to top up the transaxle oil, change engine oil, spark plug and clean air filter.
The cutter deck on this mower has been replaced, but the rest of the machine is original from what I can gather.
The tyre remains inflated when using, but goes flat in a day. These are tubeless tyres, and the garden is full of brambles, so perhaps the tyre has several small holes.
The gearbox is a hydrostatic gearbox, which operates through a pump and hydraulic fluid.
The hydrostatic gearbox (transaxle) is made by Tufftorq,

Castelgarden part no. 18400965
The machine is reluctant to reverse, and forward speed is not great either. It suggests to me that an oil change is necessary as a minimum, or some adjustment in the linkage to the gearbox from the lever. I’d be surprised if it was worn out, it’s been used to mow the lawn maximum once a week for 10 years, that’s 520 uses, or 1000 hours. A gearbox should last longer than that!
This is the first time I’ve had a look at the tractor, so starting to work out what’s wrong, and why the undercarriage looks so grimy.

I contacted Tufftorq with my enquiry posted below for your information:
Hi,
I have a Honda hf1211 which has a Tufftorq hydrostatic transmission 7A643024410. It doesn’t reverse reliably / at all. I noticed the reservoir / expansion tank was empty. I took it off and I could see oil inside the metal body of the transaxle. Do I need to fill this expansion tank up as shown on your plans? If so, what’s the best thing to fill it up with? Any other ideas about how to get it working better? Thanks
Hello,
Yes the oil should be visible in the tank. I have inserted the oil change procedure to help. Your best oil choice would be our Tuff Tech oil that you can get from the Distributor for your country with the part number 187Q0899000.
I think that you should inspect the linkages especially the pivot points. Because as those pivot points wear they will eat up some of the travel of the control lever. if the control lever does not travel as far it will not pump as much oil and the lower oil pressure can translate into slower speeds.
