Ive had the same mower about 6 years, i have not used the white honda bag thus no more green city cans since purchasing the mower. it's been a great mower with Hondas dual blades. Just did my first complete maintenance, removed and washed the engine, blade sharpening, oil in a little deferential, greased all four wheels, and new engine oil anually. Im on 1/3 acer lot with about 30 fruit trees. I mulch everything on the property right back into the lawn all the trees, shrubs everything.

Thank you for your very informative review! I purchased the HRX 217VKA and couldn't be happier. I honestly would have never made the purchase without watching your video! It's a lot of money for a mower but I'm convinced it'll last me awhile, i even purchased 2 more year's of warranty on top of Honda's 5 year. Dan I thank you for being honest about the mower and your opinion on the select drive control is spot on! Thanks again for your videos which help me make good choices.

I can't believe I just set through a 30 minute RU-vid video on a a Honda lawn mower, but this was excellent!!!! I currently have a 6 year old reconditioned Honda HRx217VKa that I bought from a local dealer over 7 years ago. It has been the best lawn mower that I've ever owned. This was a great review of the newer version of the same. After 8 years of hard use the clutch assembly on the power drive of my current Honda is slipping and very costly to fix, plus it's hard for me at 61 years old to not have the power assist. I'm going to go purchase the newer version of this Honda mower tomorrow. Thanks so much for this great review. Great Video!!

Thanks Dan. Again a great video review/non review :) I've already pre-purchased my replacement Honda to pick up tomorrow. Again for anyone reading this. My power drive clutch was failing after buying a reconditioned version of this mower over 6 years ago. It again was the best lawn mower I've ever owned. Also, it has steel drive gears for the rear wheel drive! I have 2 HRX217HYA's (2014 and 2016). They are beasts! The newer HRX217VKA model variable speed drive is also very cool! They are very fuel efficient too!

Cool video. I bought the $399 basic Honda lawnmower that they have at Home depot with the metal deck and 160cc engine. WOWO!! compared to my last 2 self propelled walk behind mowers, the Honda mower is AMAZING. Very torquey. Lol. Mulches super fine. Can't even notice the clippings, and always starts on the 1st pull. I feel I was suffering so much in the past without it. Love my Honda mower. Hope to upgrade to a model like yours or semi-professional in the future for my 1/3 acre.

Thanks to your demo videos on the Honda HRX217VKA mower, I bought one. It was hard to find. Home Depot and Lowe’s were out of stock. The Honda dealer had one left. Possibly the last one in San Antonio. Anyway, talk about going from a Ford to a Cadillac. The mower is a stud. Thanks again for you input. It made a big difference in my selection.

That's a great mower I've had mine for over 3 years and its been extremely rereliable we mow 3 or 4 yards a week with it where our big mowers don't fit we love it we don't use the bagger we mulch everything.

I always liked the Honda mowers. That machine looks like it does a nice job. I like the mulch/bag control, and the engine seems to have plenty of power and didn't labor in that high grass.

I do really like my Honda hrx217. The one I have is the same as yours I had the hydro version but rally didn't like the drive handle it was kind of clumsy to use in small yards. The big advantage to the super recycler is the side discharge and it mulches wet grass a little better but I'm cutting northern grass so your results may be different.

One tip with the mower keep some wd 40 on the adjustment part on the mower because as it gets older it will be hard to adjust the height. Just giving you this tip from a fellow Honda hrx 217 owner.

I have a new HRX and a 15 year old Toro Super Recycler. If the HRX had the Personal Pace system it would be the best mower on the planet. The Select Drive is narrow and works your thumbs. The HRX mulches better than my toro slightly. But the HRX creates a lot of dust I found on my first mow. It turns what ever you are mowing into dust. Honda should have put the GX engine’s air filter on the GCV. Very nice video!

Hey Dan. I wish I made Mowing Videos lol... I will say that I will Affirm that the HRX217 line of MOWERS are a beast. While the one I have is a Few models above the one your using here. They are all about the same. Mine is the HYA and I love it. Funny thing is that I really wish I made Mowing Videos, Sadly I don't have a Tripod or anyone willing to hold a camera for me while I MOW lol.... However I will say this. Couple of days ago now I was out Mowing my lawn and my neighbor came over was like Think you can take down that last 10' of my back yard with your mower or Line Trimmer. Sure I said and without changing my settings. I am going to tell you that looking at the height of your grass it looks short compared to what I went over. First pass. I used my bag. Set at 1/2 bag and mulch, From the shear height of this grass it would climb it. So I would back up about foot or two and go again. Then I thought best to just Rear Discharge it then go over again with bag and it was like a walk in the park. Only one time did it sound like it wanted to stall. Once I was done with the major part of the cut, I put the bag back on and set to 1/2 bag and mulch and it cleaned it up like a champ. Now the grass isn't as green as the main part that they have been mowing because it was in no joking over 4 foot tall in some areas in that back 10 by 20 foot section. Once it gets the sun it will be like normal. Only one time did the machine stall on me since I owned it. I was mowing some taller then normal grass and needed to empty the bag, While bag is off I lower lever to slow, I put bag back on and forgot to move lever back to full power and when I engaged the blades it was in some taller grass and cut out. Started right back up without issue. MSRP is 829 Got mine one year end sale last year. It has been a beast on lawn this year and even my Cab Cadet with Honda motor is no match for the quality of the HRX217HYA. I know to be honest they are in different League (Class) Enjoy your Videos, Be Safe, Happy Mowing

Wow today I met my mowers match. Did the front just like my own lawn without issue. Even with it being overgrown. In the back yard however the grass is something different so much so that it was very thick and wet. Top not so much but down low grass was very wet. Took more to mow then I thought it would and stalled out from being so tall and wet also didn't help the last few mows the grass was tall and who ever did it didn't bag or rake. So Tall, thick and old thick areas of clumps was more then my mower wanted to mow. I know, I could have set the deck higher cut off less and would not have been an issue. However I mowed it at no cost. I just wanted to get it done. Stalled 3 times only in the back. Both front and back same height just front want wet or thick. Happy Mowing.

Fantastic review. I've had the fully loaded HRX model for a year now. It's taken me that full year to appreciate everything that this mower does. I've kept my old HRR model which I save for fall and spring cleanup. The only thing the HRR does better, is bag. The HRR can vacuum clippings off of a sidewalk and leave very little if any behind. I bought the HRX because the HRR bag needed to be emptied too often. The HRX mulches so well, I don't even need to bag unless the grass is wet. Which brings me to my last comment: the HRX is the only mower I've owned that can handle wet grass.

I run the 216 and 217. Downside 217 front will bump up with a heavy bag, also the hydro oil resivour not accessible for refilling (216 hydro is).

I just purchased the 2020 version with blade stop and hydro drive ... but that is not the reason to comment. I have mowed around my mail box for years and never, ever thought of offsetting like you do early in the vid. Damn, I am doing that next week! It looks so much simpler.

Dan are the ball bearings open or sealed. and will they require cleaning and lubing if they are open? I like the way it seems to lay down the heavy grass without the clumps. do you think that is because the underside is new and slick or do you think that "clumpless" result will continue as the mower ages?

How was the transition from the Troy Built to the Honda in regards to making the self propelled work? I bought an HRR and I'm taking it back the thumb paddles are killing me. I'm looking at the HRX but I'm not sure how much better it is. The other mower I'm looking at is the Super Recycler. I have a 5000 sq ft lawn and I cut twice a week so comfort is important. The HRR is making me miss my Troy Built.

Been popular with contractors in Australia for a few years now. Lots of rough lawns though down under so bar blades aren't always a good thing. We tend to like swing back blades. If you hit something with the bar blades bye bye crank shaft

The Super Recycler would have blown mulch out on the drive - just as your Troy-Bilt would. The difference between those two machines is that the Toro would leave behind finer mulch - but still would have required blowing off. Dan, how do you like the self-propel of the Honda vs the Troy-Bilt in-step system?

Top speed? How much faster will it go cranked up to the fastest settings? I know you probably wouldn't want to mow super fast for quality of cut, but was curious since you had it set to it's slowest setting. Seems like a great mower. Very impressive that you get no blow out when you transition to the driveway.

I replaced an exmark commercial 21 with the hrx 217 with 200 gcv motor recently. Other than the smallish fuel tank, and being a little light in the front end, i love this mower! Ive got some yards im now using this mower in front instead of my exmark metro. I added a checkmate striper to it and you cant get a cleaner cut look

I have two of them..Hydrostatic Drive.. I have owned 6 or 7 of the HR 216/217 's over the years..(I cut a few on the side). The only thing I can say is they really messed up when the put just "Tire Skins" on the plastic wheel.. After a while they come loose..I miss the days of the full blown tire.

@@DansVlog The worst part about it..When they first did it (8 years or so ago) the "Skins" were barely lasting a year. People were bringing their mowers back to where they were purchased and said "WTF".. Honda started replacing wheels at their cost..(Warranty).. Then the numbers of replacements kept coming in..So they changed their policy and started saying it was "Customer Abuse"...

Just convinced me to get the HRX over the HRR which I’ve had before and was great mower. Can’t wait to see how much better this HRX is. Thanks for the videos.

i have the hrr216vya, i did notice when the grass is really wet it bogs a bit. not anything extreme. also the other draw back in the rear shield on mine came off and got bent. have to get a new rod for it.

All the commercial guys use Testerossa's in my area, for the wet grass - has no problems. (They have engine options incl the Honda and some US brands). I'm weighing up to get the same plus one of these. Not sure which one first as yet. The Testerossa has a weaker plastic shell than this one. But the guys still keep buying them.

Oh and the blades are different, your blades will swing back. This mower may give a better cut, but if it hits something, it could break something.

Dumb question from a neophyte. I can't avoid cutting wet grass here in Central Florida. It rains every day whether we need it or not :>). So, a lot of clippings stick to the deck and need to be cleaned off to keep the mower running efficiently. Belts, cables etc. are exposed so I hesitate using water to remove clippings. A Honda dealer said to go ahead it won't harm the machine, just don't spray water directly on cables and belts. What's your opinion? FYI: You probably know this but I used Dawn and water mixed on caked on clippings and got good results. I'm glad I discovered that because a nuclear device was my next choice. LOL Thanks

Dan, after using the Honda for a few months, does grass clippings block the mulching door from opening and closing? My seven year old Hrr216vka does not have this option, but has a pull out plug when I want to bag. Thanks, Don from Milwaukee

Grass clippings immediately start to block the rear door. Are usually move the lever back-and-forth a few times to clear it out whenever I change the bag

If you mulch, make sure the grass is comepltly dry.

Hey guy I own that exact mower, it would not cut threw tall wet grass, just kept stalling. I didn’t think it was that high but had it on full mulch as the clip control was frozen there would not move. How do you keep it moving free. Thought I had a good mower but have doubts

That you'll have to answer for yourself... Some people swear by the push mower, honda makes one in their Commercial Class of mowers and people buy them at a price of $800

I own the commercial 21 and I don’t like it. It mulches anything tall but it leaves many stragglers, does the hrx 217 do that too? Honda’s when bagging do-do the best cut from any 21” mower I have seen..

I am torn apart.. I see you had absolutely no problems cutting this tall grass while I've seen videos on YT of people buying this mower new, trying to cut tall grass and a damn thing clogs and stalls. It's the same 190 engine.. Hmmm. I'm confused.. I see you didn't buy the model with blade clutch, or as Honda calls it - Roto stop. That's a great thing to have when you bag or when you need to move some trash and you don't have to shut down the mower and start it up every time. Anyway, do you plan to use this mower in your landscaping business since it's not a commercial model? Thnx...

vegass04 technique and experience gets me thru tall grass even with 300$ mowers. I have videos teaching my skills on my channel. This mower is commercial grade. Even has a 5 year warranty I believe.
