Great comparison! I have the 2020 version (pre Vortex deck) of this Super Recycler, and my engine does sputter sometimes. Bought it over the HRX because of the stow-n-go (not much storage space at my house), maneuverability, and the shock absorbing handles that are good for bumpy yards. I mostly enjoy it and do not regret the purchase. Mulching quality is right on par with the mid-90s HRB215 and early 2010s HRN that I had prior to that. The 190cc Briggs has what feels like double the power of the standard HRN 160cc Honda motors. My grass is healthy and very thick, and the Briggs has never once stalled on me. The 1990s machine I'd get to stall maybe 1-2x a year, the 160cc HRN, more like 1-2x per mow lol one big con vs the plastic deck Hondas is the amount of grass build up I get, but I guess I would say it's not any worse than the steel deck Honda I had prior to this one.

I have been wanting a smartstow Toro to save room and now watching this video, that is this same Honda that I am replacing. I am awaiting the Toro 190cc to arrive so I cannot compare them yet, personally. However, I have had that Honda HRX217 for about 8-9 years and still starts first pull. I have super thick grass and keep it at 4" cut without any problems. The deck is a non issue really, it is similar to a football helmet material and those are meant for taking a beating. My Honda still looks brand new. I take care of my sister-in-law's lawn and will leave it over there, so I will get to enjoy both of these mowers. Thanks for these great videos, I ordered the Toro after watchign your review video on it. P.S. - I do the annual maintenance on the Honda religiously and keep an extra sharpened blade on hand to rotate every few cuts (I am a lawn nut). One thing I am struggling with is the thought of the "no oil change" Toro marketing. I believe I will end up removing the annual used oil and replacing it, but haven't made up my mind yet.

I have had the same Honda for about a year now and agree completely with all of your opinions, especially about the underside of the deck. Lots of places for grass clippings to accumulate. But, that is my only complaint. Hands down, the most powerful walk behind mower I have used. I cut 3 lawns with really thick St. Augustine grass and it is very rare that it has an issue. One thing you might have left out, does the Toro have a fuel shutoff? That can be a huge carburetor saver long term.

Just found your channel and you’ve been a huge help in researching my next lawn mower. Do you think the Honda is better for sloped yards than the Toro? Both my front yard and backyard are sloped and I’ve had a Honda before but the biggest issue I had was with the cutting. I have Zoysia in my backyard and it’s pretty thick stuff, you think this model Honday can handle that as well? Thanks for posting these videos, they are a big help.

Great review, tks. Leaning to the Honda HRX217 HYA, but still have some more homework to do. One of the questions have on any of the self-propelled mowers is how they turn, then start reverse pass. Especially given the various handles that need to be engaged. Have a smaller front yard so there is a lot of turns.

I’ve had my 217HRX for about 15 years. It has the electric start option but it is so easy to start it’s not needed. Even my wife can pull start it. I have many curves and tight areas in my yard and the self propelled feature is a blessing to help the turnarounds. Hands down the Honda wins over my former snapper and toro! The only repair has been the speed control cable, which I replaced myself.

Just purchased a hrx217 and I absolutely love it! Looking for a back up mower at the moment and can't seem to make up my mind. I could go with a Honda HRN with the gcv170 but I want something a little beefier. I really like the Toro Super Recycler with the 190cc Briggs, and I love the personal pace system. With that said, something intrigues me about the new Ariens Razor 21 dual blade. Looks like a beast and with the dual blade I'm very curious on the cut quality. Curious on the Reflex system too! Unfortunately not much info on the Ariens kicking around RU-vid just yet. Would love to see a review on one!

Ha, I just bought a Honda 216 on Sunday afternoon and on Monday morning I was given a near new Toro 22. Now I can't decide which is better. The Toro seems to have a bit more power and will drag you around on a trailer if you could find a hitch point, but that Honda is just a lovely machine too, with perfect lawn stripes and cleaner cut. I even tried both in the rain and both gave perfect results. Beggared for choice after putting up with dodgy mowers for a couple of years. BTW, how do you get rid of old mowers which still work just fine but are ratty compared to both of my new ones? Probably could leave them on the sidewalk with a sign, 'FREE to good Home'.

I bought a Honda HRX in 2021. Overall big fan. I will say, while the Mulch/Bag adjustment seems like a good idea, if you have a finer grass like Bermuda you'll still wind up with clippings accumulating in the discharge port when fully on Mulch setting (along with a little bit of discharged clippings coming out of the back). Feels like Honda could have solved this with some sort of weather stripping or just better seal for the adjuster. It's not a huge pain, but doesn't match the usual Honda engineering standard.

I only just recently purchased a HRX217, and I have yet to operate it. But the only relevant part of the mower is, and always will be, the engine. The mower that this will be replacing is a Craftsman Honda with a GCV160 rated at 5.5 HP, no self-drive, that my father purchased in 2002. The engine itself is still solid and burns little to no oil. The main issue it's had is with the gas tank. When you spill gas on the cap threads, it makes the cap seal on and no air can enter to displace the fuel being burned, thus making it run lean, necessitating leaving the cap loose. Still, I would have kept it up, but due to too many impacts with tree roots, the deck is cracking. One engine mount point even broke, and I had to make a new one, but it's only a matter of time before another mount point fails completely. Even to this point, the engine starts on the first or second pull. Except for the carburetor, it's never been opened up once. No valve or cam adjustments. One dose of SeaFoam. Only the pull starter and carb gaskets have been replaced. and the addition of the governor arm oil seal. This engine drank down 2-cycle gas without a problem. It even took down year-old regular gas that made the engine detonate, and it still ran with no ill effect. As hard as I have been on it, I can't kill this thing. Even if the machine it powers wears out and falls apart, these engines simply cannot die. It is the absolute last Sears Craftsman appliance that I have, and after 21 years together, I will be sad to see it go. I only wish there was a more dignified way to retire it.

How would you compare this Toro model to a new HRN series Honda? For comparison would be nice to know. Also, there are complaints supposedly with the changes Honda made in the last few years about grass getting stuck in the belt area and causing transmission issues? I'm Honda guy with a 17 year old HRN and it's about ready to be replaced and I'm trying to figure out what to go with. My old HRN doesn't seem to have enough power at times and I'm wondering if I need to step up to a HRX or the newer 170 CC engine will be big enough to notice a difference on the HRN. Sorry for all the questions trying to figure out what seriously look at. Especially at 5000 ft I do lose power. Thanks!!!

Hey Daniel! First I have not had any issues with grass and the belt. I don’t know what’s causing this to happen to people but I mow twice a week with no problems. Perhaps if you are mowing a ridiculously long lawn this could be the case but I don’t see any issues mowing my lawn when it’s longer. The 170cc engine has plenty of power and is actually pretty fuel efficient. Hope this helps you out!

I have the HRX217K5VYAA. I got the Honda Roto-Stop blade control. That was the reason I bought it. I can run the engine without the blades engaged. Ine thing you may have overlooked was the size of the bag opening. So large you can dump leaves out of it faster with less fuss. Give the Honda two more points.

I like my Honda GCV 170, cheapest Home Depot Honda ($549), but disappointed that in order not to have stray grass, I have to line up the grass line with the silver metal on the inner wheel, so im basically getting about 18 inches per line despite having a 21 inch blade. If i try to put the wheel on the line there is a strip of grass it misses, whereas my old toro i simply could just put the tire on the line and not miss any grass. My Honda did sputter and stall on 15 inch wet grass on mulch mode, but when I switched to bag mode it didnt sputter at all with the same grass. I dont use bag so i just put up with “grass feet” when in bag mode lol. I do like that this model has a steel deck and not plastic like the one in his video. I will say i tried to put the lever in the middle of bag and mulch mode to compromise to avoid grass feet, but gravity makes lever slip back into bag mode so no point of putting it in middle.

In 2010 I bought a brand new Honda HRX2172VKA for $600. I have used it a lot! I mainly mulch both my grass as needed and my leaves in the fall. Other than normal maintenance stuff like blades, spark plugs, oil and air filters... I have only had to replace (1) part. I started hearing a weird ticking noise. I searched the web (including RU-vid); found a video with the exact same problem. the noise was coming from the pull start (the pull start worked, but the ticking was annoying). I ordered a new pull start for around $25 + tax and the issue was fixed. This has been the most reliable lawnmower I have owned. My first was a Craftsman that lasted about 5 years . Then I bought a Toro which lasted about 6-7 years. My HONDA has exceeded my expectations.

@garagegear I'm looking for the best mower for $600 or less. I bought a 21 inch honda from home depot and it was recalled, so I returned it hoping to get some sales for black friday. Regardless of it being on sale, do you have a recommendation? I've watched a few of your videos and theres some flaws with Toro, but it seems to me its between a Honda and a Toro, but I'm weary of honda due to the recall and them discontinuing production of gas mowers. Appreciate any recommendation you may have! Thanks

My Honda 216 has been causing me a lot of issues. If you purchase a Honda mower, there will be trouble ahead. Naturally I'm going to advise you to go with Toro..

I have owned 6 Honda lawn mowers since I was 22 and recently turned 62 . I have noticed my last two mowers where not as robust and I finally had enough with my last new hrx217 with quality break downs and leaks , so I sold it after 6 months due to living in a rural area the nearest honda shop is 45 mins away and repairs where weeks apart. My son inlaw purchased a toro 22" recycler with briggs and stratton 190cc motor and has been raving about it last 2 years. I decided to buy the Toro AWD 163cc recycling mower this week and can not beleave how much better this mower is over the Honda's I wish I would have listened to my son inlaw earlier. Have heard Honda is stopping production of its lawn mower range and I think they should if yhey are not going to research their products properly and release expensive rubbish on to the market. My Honda leaf blower and whipper snipper are due to be replaced shortly I am sure I won't be going Honda again for anything.

I have a Honda 190cc HRX 217 that is about 12yrs old, and a 32yr old cast aluminum Toro Recycler with the tiny 121cc Suzuki 2-cycle engine and 3-speed transmission. I have some bumps in the yard and the Honda is kind of bouncy and feels a bit top heavy compared to the old Toro. I think the Toro is a few pounds heavier and most of the weight is in the deck, and the Honda has a lighter deck and larger heavier motor that stands much higher off the deck. The Honda does make more power, but it is more than needed. The Honda is a great mower, but the old Toro mulches better and leaves a much better finished cut. I am not a fan of Honda's select drive or Toro's Personal Pace. I like old school 3-speeds, but I have never tried Hondas Hydrostatic transmissions. If I bump into an old 1990's cast aluminum Honda HR 215 on the cheap I'm grabbing it. I'm not feelin' Honda's Nexite so much even though I am a HUGE Honda fan. Been driving Honda's for 27yrs, and my old Accord saved my life 23yrs ago.

Looked at the Honda and the local dealer would not even accommodate me as he said he could not sell a unit due to a recall. From what I have ascertained the 200cc Honda engine has a valve 'guide' problem and as they are 'leaving' those of us that have properties where the 'electric' units would not be an option that made the decision easy to make. I will deal with the plug for mulching. I am not worried as I do not make any attempt to keep up with Jone's. I just need to cut my very hilly undulating 1 acre lot. Cheers.

The Toro ground speed control is the best by far because it is fully automatic. Walk faster and the mower speed increases. Walk slower and the mower speed decreases. With the Honda you have to constantly coordinate your hands and walking speed, and the speed levers are very hard on my arthritic thumbs. My Honda engine would not restart when hot, so the electric start was useless. The Toro with blade brake does not need to restart when hot. These factors were big enough to make me give away my 2 year old Honda and buy the Toro.

It is Feb. 2024 and I have the chance to get a Honda HRX217. Besides them not being made anymore is there any reason I shouldn't get it? I know electric is great but I just want something I know that could be my last mower ever.

They have a camshaft issue on some mowers that were recently made. Neighbor bought one last year with no issues. I would get it! It’s under warranty!
