Honda Monkey motorcycle camping: a Quite Bad trial run

Ever since I bought my Honda Monkey in spring 2022, i've like the idea of motorcycle camping, but i've never gotten around to trying it - until now. The Monkey is itty bitty and doesn't have a lot of room to carry gear, so this week i set out to see just how much gear i can carry and just how disastrous it will be should i decide to take my motorcycle camping in the wilderness.
Watch next: • Honda Monkey: Escaping...
Honda Monkey playlist: • Honda Monkey: From nov...
About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

You didn't actually lose the hammock. You wisely used it as a trail marker to find the road back.

Two words come to mind for transporting luggage in your situation: Cargo Net. A small one would work well.

And some Rox Straps in there too. Also, a new offroad rider with an open-face helmet is not the right choice.

I once dropped my pack off the back of my snowmobile in the middle of Yellowstone. I had to backtrack 20 miles to find it. Yellowstone at sunset is amazing, Yellowstone in the dark as it gets colder and colder was not amazing. When I got to the exit gate the park ranger was nice and only gave me a warning for traveling in the park at night.

A large backpack meant for hiking is the fix. Works like a charm. And tent is kinda mandatory if ticks and skeetos involved. Fun vid

A trial run is such a good idea 😊 You have 2 things on the rack, tie them separately to it with short cords & just use the bungees to stabilize it. Perhaps tie one of them on the fuel tank?

For every motorcycle camping trip ive done, everything needed has fit in an extra large dry bag ratchet strapped vertically to the sissy bar with a bedroll below it strapped to the body framing.

motocamping almost never goes great the first time, but thats what makes it great the first time. i still manage to screw something up every single time. also, its baller af to be doing that on a monkey, in regular ass clothes, just raw dawgin the world on a minibike. love it

here is a major tip... stop using "bungy cords" use a ratchet strap instead. they will hold your load a lot tighter and more securely.

Home Depot HDX milk crate, fasten it to your rack with u-bolts, I’d place the smaller items such as the hammock in the bottom because the sleeping bag strapped down atop would hold everything else in the basket.

A sleeping bag has no value if you don't have an isolating mat below. Even more important in a hammock than on ground, the bottom will otherwise always be cold, since he bag does not isolate when weight is on it. But your approach is so refreshing, but please believe me with the right gear camping IS in fact fun! :-)

I had an old Triumph Tiger 650 back in the day. For saddlebags, I found a couple of olive drab daypacks at an Army/Navy surplus store. I just crisscrossed the shoulder harnesses over the rear wheel, worked like a champ. Looked nice and retro also.

Look into a top box-like a little trunk-to see if that would work for you. Otherwise like you said, go with as big a crate as you can fit on the back and bolt that baby on. Lose the bungees and either go with ratchet straps (highly recommended) or a motorcycle cargo net…or both. Maybe bring extension straps for that sweet hammock you found on the trail.😉

Try to put everything in a big backpack and when you climb on your bike loose a lil bit the straps allow the weight to rest on the seat and rack. That way you control the backpack and you don't getting tired.

Sleeping bags have two temperature ratings. One is the survival rating, which is what most companies use to advertise and the other is the comfort rating. The next time you go to buy a new sleeping bag be sure to check out that comfort rating.

You have 18k views right now. Pretty much killing it. If you want to continue down this path I’d start contacting some vendors and get some sponsorships for parts. T. rex racing makes some amazing parts for the monkey and there is a ton of great motocamping gear out there. You can probably upgrade that monkey for next to nothing. Motocamping content is definitely popular and I think you can kill it! And don’t doubt the little monkey and say it’s not a long distance adventure bike. Anything is an adventure bike, all you have to do is start the adventure. I’d totally be your motorcycle friend if I wasn’t on the other side of the country! Keep it up!

Nothing wrong with a small adventure. A duffel or large beach tote or cargo net will solve a bunch of those issues. also get a hank of camping rope, infinitely handy to take with you whenever you camp. Just my 2c take it or leave it. GO EMMA! :)

You don't need a basket, you should get Rok Straps. They're straps that loops around your rack and you can tighten them to really secure stuff. If you need more storage at some point, you could look for a tank bag. They are bags that fit on top of the fuel tank.

Bin your Bungees and get Rok Straps instead. They are much much better ( although expensive). And if you do this use them so that they are parallel to each other and not in a X pattern like you had with your Bungees. Also there are racks available that fit on the front of the Bike which go over the headlight. This would give you extra carrying capacity. Love seeing you out on the Monkey. Carry on.😊

Weather/ temperatures has more to do with camping needs than anything else. I have been camping 66 of my 78 years. I have camped with a blanket, peanut and jelly sandwich, and Kool-Aid to a 32' fifth wheel and they all work for a certain season of life. In our thirties we pulled a pop up tent designed for motorcycles. I have had a basket on the front and saddle bags, or milk crate on a rear rack. (Always carry some nylon rope, with or without a tent.)

Bungee bad, tie down strap good. Even rope is better than stretchies. Hammock with only a sleeping bag = cold butt syndrome. Hammock with underquilt = warm and comfy. No tarp over the hammock... risky. Honestly you'd be better off with a cheap foam pad on the ground until you get hammock camping sorted out. Many learning experiences ahead! :D
@mathewdavis-adventuresandd6643
Nice little break for houseboat building. It might be a little janky looking, but I've seen a lot of people over in the Philippines strap milk crates on the back of their motorbikes. Helps hold things together so they don't squeeze out around straps. At least they did this when they didn't have three other people perched up on the bike going down the road. lol

Even an unsuccessful trip is still successful as long as you make it back out of the wilds. You might check out itchy boots, not camping so much, but definitely a good channel for motorcycle adventures. Always wanted to find a dual sport, but i struggle enough to ride my nighthawk as it is😂

Get rid of the bungee cords. Get some Roc Starps. They are much more secure than bungee cords and safer to use. Another good option for tie downs are Giant Loop Pronghorn straps. I keep both kinds on hand. Good video on monkey content. My wife has a monkey and she loves it. I also enjoy riding it.

a slightly larger Luggage Rack at the back of the bike. both in width and length. possibly a small sissy bar that provides support for the luggage. I myself had a luggage rack on my motorcycle that was too small. mounted a black painted aluminum sheet 26 cm long approx. 10 inches. 30cm wide about 12 inches. and drilled holes along the edges so that the hooks could be attached to the luggage staps
