In this video, we are trying to fix what we think is a leaking roof rack. We later found out it was the door weather stripping.

This is not the proper way to fix a leak in this area. Once you remove the rail like you did, you can see that there is already some seam sealer applied in the channel to the vehicles outer edge. It is only to seal the seam where the two metal panels connect. The channel need to be well cleaned and this area only resealed - silicone caulk is fine. The amount needed is very small and only needed right at the seam where the old material was. Do not fill the entire channel like was done here. The channel is designed for water to drain out either via the back or the front through the front windshield drains. If you see evidence that there is leakage at the actual bolt insertion points, a small amount of sealant can be used right at the base of these. The approach shown here will never allow for trim removal in the future and any water that gets in the channel at this point will never be able to drain. There are multiple posts on this on the Odyclub forum. I just resealed mine the other day (both sides) and I only used a couple of ounces total of silicone sealer. Actually cleaning the channel so that water can drain out is probably the biggest advantage of removing the rack and trim. It is a sample gravity drain system, but that won't work when you fill it all up like you did in this repair.

Yes, I agree. Good luck trying to get the strip off in future with all that slaz and stopping the water from draining out. Will cause bigger problems over time.

Agree totally. Now, could you recommend what type of silicone sealant for this? Also, how to remove the moldings at both ends (where they meet the windshields) without breaking the clips.

Thank you so much Razor for taking the time to make this video. Had the same problem with a 2010 Odyssey. You helped me a lot. Broke the rack tring to pry it. Water coming to the inside in the same area.Keep up with those good videos. The thing that I like the most is that you were not an expert, you said it, and still you wanted to help. You did! Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the video! I have a leak in my 2009 odyssey that I am fairly confident is from the roof rack screws, its towards the back end on the drivers side, right about where the third row seatbelt is located. I definitely need new weather strips, but hoping this whole process just temporarily solved our problem! We will be having our 4th and final baby in April, I also babysit our nephew who will also have a new sibling in March, needless to say, I need to be able to use ALL of the seats in my minivan lol. Will update the next time it rains or I wash it!

Sorry for the late reply. Best of luck to you with the van and the baby. Mine started leaking again and then just mysteriously stopped again.

I'm definitely going mask off the ridge on my civic when I'll do this work. Also just use a very roomy bit. I was kinda in shock when I saw the amount of silicon you used?!? Also kinda baffled the strip would even go back in. Looked like you filled the complete water line. Guess it won't leak very soon

I appreciate your work here. But as others have noted, that’s way too much of a mess you’ve created. Simply covering the tiny hairline crack that is in your seam sealer is all that likely is required. That’s how I fixed mine. Mine was so bad that I had the dreaded MICU water intrusion, causing the van to behave like it was possessed - the rear ac relay cycling even with the key out, lights on the dash staying on, battery dead in hours, alarm sounding in the middle of the night, etc. I filled the crack under the weatherstripping and haven’t had a problem since. That was 4 years ago. However, I think it’s way overkill on a van of this age to grind everything out and replace the SS. Simply cleaning the channel and covering the crack with sealant (I used OSI) has worked great for me. She’s in her twilight years now. No reason to replace a hip if she ain’t got feet to walk (her years spent in the NE have taken their toll).

This is not a proper leak diagnostic or repair. Sealing that molding to the roof is not the answer. See how the rack is mounted onto studs that do not penetrate the roof skin? water is supposed to flow in that channel under the molding and make its way off the car to the front or rear. Keep looking, the leak is likely a body seam or sunroof drain
@RazorBucks
@RazorBucks 4 года назад
The leak was due the the roof rack screws under the molding.

@@RazorBucks I thiink Todd is right, yes to caulk the nuts but not the whole rail as you did since water will not flow

Appreciate your effort here. If you want a durable, permanent repair I’d use a urethane caulk, $6. Or a body seam caulk $50.

Hi Razor, I have a 15 MDX, and I found the joint of Front passenger A pillar trim and the headliner area is wet when it rains, after I pull off the front right headliner, I found the drip was coming from the roof of the front passenger side grab handler, and above it, it is the roof rail mounting hole, and question is, I am not sure those thread that mount on the roof rail, was it weld through the roof or they actually weld it on the roof, because if they weld it on the roof, it's impossible to leak inside.

It’s Not the Roof-Rack or trim causing the leak. It’s the spot welded roof seam. You must scrape out the dried out factory Seam-Sealer. Sandpaper prep the channel, & spread Eastwood Seam Sealer into the channel with a brush. RTV won’t work.

Thanks for the video. very helpful. Can you tell me how the weatherstrip attaches to the metal molding that it covers? Does it just snap in place? My weatherstrip ('06 Odyssey) has dry rotted and the section on the passenger side in front of the roof rail is flapping in the wind, literally. The metal molding I can see underneath looks intact. Just need to know if I can purchase replacement weatherstripping alone and how it attaches to the metal molding strip underneath. TIA.

Did this end up fixing your issue? I have a leak that I believe to be coming from the roof rack. It soaks the b pillar and seatbelts. Super annoying.
@RazorBucks

It did. I put off doing the other side and then it started leaking over there. I agree, super annoying and smelly, especially in humid Florida. I believe our door gasket may also need to be replaced, but it does not appear to be leaking.

You need 4 sections for the right (R), and 4 sections for the left (L) roof trim... Search your favorite Honda parts supplier website, here's mine for the roof moldings... Be forewarned, any significant bending of the metal weather stripping will result in it's ability to be properly installed! www.hondapartsnetwork.com/search?search_str=Moulding+roof
