Today we go out on the Honda Shadow 750. Is the Honda Shadow Spirit 750 a good beginner motorcycle? Is a 750 too big for a beginner? We take it out to test some highway speeds and how it handles. It stops good, it rides good, its not overpowered, it's pretty comfortable, you can ride two up, you can adjust the shocks, and you can pick these motorcycles up relatively inexpensive. This makes them a great beginner motorcycle! I would highly recommend this motorcycle for any new rider, male or female, tall or shorter. Until next time, ride safe!

I love how people in the USA consider having some less than 800cc is "beginner" motorcycle... 😂In latinoamerica having something between 250cc and 500cc is playing on GP league kind of feeling...
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 3 года назад
😂 It probably depends on the type of bike as well. A cruiser versus a sport bike makes a big difference when it comes to CC’s. I suppose it depends on traffic a bit as well. I am visualizing videos I have seen with the GP comment you made. 😂 Back on the day, a 750 was a huge cruiser! Thanks for watching!

Hi Dustin, I recently bought a 2009 Honda Shadow Spirit. I don't have my license yet so it's in my garage and I am looking forward to taking it out. I go for the MSF in two weeks. I am 5'5" and it's a perfect size for me. My feet are flat on the ground. It's plenty big for a first bike. Especially for a short guy like me. Thank you for all the videos. You inspired me to make the move to actually buying a bike and getting my license. I love your new Road King! Ride safe. Joe from Oakville Ontario

That's how I ended up meeting the motorcycle mechanic I use now. He owns an MC repair shop about 35 miles away and was on a Poker Run (two years ago) and saw me pulled over in a deserted area with no cell service after my whole rear license plate bracket/assembly/harness had snapped off. Helped me zip tie up everything and get it all tight so I could ride it home. Since then, he did some major maintenance on my bike (valves, carb cleaning, and replaced the clutch), and done excellent work.

I just like mine, I don't love it. The only single thing the Shadow really seems going for it is that... it's pretty. I've only owned mine a month and already I got a laundry list of hurt: Things I loathe about my Shadow (compared to my 80's Honda bikes): 1) The ignition key is danging off the side. I have to take it off my key ring and put it back on every time I get on or off the bike. The ignition key belongs at the top of the front forks where you can't forget it, and where it's supported and can rest on the top of the forks. You know this if you have a big wad of keys on your key chain. 2) The vacuum actuated fuel petcock had a recall on it, which failed right off the bat. When it fails, even when switched on, your bike gets zero fuel and won't crank. 3) The footpegs are too far forward; where I am use to putting my feet, there is nothing but dead air 4) The rear footpegs are sky high... you can't move your feet back and forth from front to back say if you get a leg cramp while driving 5) There's a lot of safety switch garbage on the bike that will keep the bike from cranking or just kill it and you don't know why. For example, try to put the bike in gear when the footpeg is down, and the bike just suddenly and inexplicably... dies 6) It's like driving around a piece of silvware that you have to clean and polish... all the friggin time 7) A lot of parts like the fenders are made of... not metal... but plastic. metal if it gets bent up or scratched, you and straighten out, derust, repaint. not so with plastic 8) The battery is terribly undersized for it; a new battery gives you about 60 seconds of crank time before it's flat dead 9) Why does my carb motorcycle... have an ECM computer... that could fail??? It makes no sense. 10) No fuel gauge, even though the fuel cap is right there next to the speedo on the tank. You could put a spiral rod float operated fuel gauge there instead of a gas cap. 11) No 12v out on the handlebars or cigarette lighter, to plug any accessory in, like a radar detector. I'll have to yet again tap into the headlight low beam circuit. 12) Tires are expensive for it 13) It doesn't look like you could take the head off the bike, without taking the entire engine out of the bike and disassembling everything completely. Eventually, you are going to have to do this to replace the rings and cylinder head. It doesn't look like the carb is easy to take out either, and this you have to do all the time to clean it. 14) The battery, which you have to get to all the time (like to connect jumping cables to), is under the seat, under another plastic cover, instead of off the side of the bike. Why? 15) No luggage carrying capacity whatsoever. You have to add aftermarket stuff, and there really are not any good options for a big rack on the back or sissy bar. They all are pretty small and useless. There are a few super tall sissy bars out there, but they look kind of out of place on the Shadow. I'm just going to have to build my own rack. 16) The tool and manual compartment is a disaster of design, with a separator between the two sides... one for their tools, one for the user manual. When I bought mine both were missing. Okay, so I'll stick my own bag of tools in there. No can do, the completely needless half height separator wall prevents that. Worse, there's way more space around this compartment that it could have been made substantially bigger. Ditto for making the battery box bigger, they could of done that so you could of swapped in a bigger traditional sized motorcycle battery. 17) The ECM sits on top of the battery, and you have to move it around every time you get at the battery, flexing the wires into it. I tried to find a dedicated place shuffling around in there where I wouldn't have to that, but no luck. 18) The rear fender does not go all the way down past the rear swing arm, which means you get sand and dirt every time you drive accumulating on that flat swing arm surface right in front of the rear tire. Why? I'm seriously thinking extending the rear fender with some riveted on rubber car tire material flat... or something. 19) Not a deal breaker, but the choke is located right between two hot cyldiners. Usually you only need to turn it on when they are cold... but if you forget to push it back in, and they are hot? 20) The fuel petcock directions for ON, OFF, and Reserve are shifted 90 degrees out of sync compared to all my other bikes. ON is backwards, OFF is down, and RES is forward... instead of my other bikes, where it makes a whole lot more sense... ON is up, OFF is backwards, and RES is down Honda has definitely went down hill with the Shadow or thrown common sense out the window. They were doing everything right, but I can only guess they tried to copy a Harley look, and thusly did everything... now... wrong? Just to be pretty? Or look like a Harley? I don't know. I love my other Hondas, but the Shadow.. I'm like... kind of disappointed. What went wrong here, Honda? Did you boot out all the retired engineers, and hire a bunch of millenial engineers fresh out of college who were enamored with their CAD program and never rode a motorcycle? Your really don't realize how annoying these things are about the Shadow if it's like your first bike or the only bike you've ever owned or you came from a Harley. But if like me you're a hardcore in the Honda's Camp 1980's Honda 20 year rider and still driving motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's golden age of motorcycling... you're like, WTF Honda! Why did you screw up everything everywhere on the Shadow... you were doing most everything before... right. The Shadow 750 is not a beginners bike... I will tell you that... it's too heavy and like driving around a freight train. Start with a 125cc, 250cc.. something infinitely flicable... and then move up to a 450cc. You really don't need more than 450cc in my opinion. 750cc turned out to be overkill. It's a tradeoff, more horsepower means lower mpg. A 450 is about the right balance between the two. A 750cc you're just throwing away gas. Going from my 750cc back to my 250cc is like night and day for thrill to drive. The 250cc is so much more fun to drive.

@@TWOWHEELDYeah, it's funny, before I bought the bike I thought my biggest headache would be the V-twin I could not take the head off of without removing the entire engine. Maybe it will be some day. You can literally replace both heads on a Honda Rebel with the engine in the bike. Air cooled Inline straight twin for the win! Now that I own a Shadow, I find the actual annoyance I run into every... single... time... is something insignificantly small Honda did to save a few pennies from an engineering standpoint... the key (and choke) hanging off the side of the bike. That's why something so riddiculous small made #1. Literally, I have to make a conscious effort not to leave my key in the bike, and put it back on my key chain in every parking lot, lest someone simply crank it up and drive it away. I rarely used the kill switch before to turn off a bike, I just switched off the key and pulled it out. Now I have to use the kill switch every time. And since I don't touch or see the keys to turn off the bike, I'm likely to forget them in the bike. Reaching down to feel around for the choke/key/petcock with those two big hot cylinders down there... while you are going down the street... not fun either! This week I learned a new pita about motorcycle ownership... you've got to bone down harder on securing your vehicle than you do with a car. I just bought an Invoxia GPS tracker yesterday, after watching tons of videos about how dead simple it is for a thief to twist the handle bars and break the steering lock. Now I've got a huge chain and have been watching the lockpicklawyer to find the best padlock to padlock the thing to a pole while I'm in the city.

Simple answer is ignore the cc’s and look at the hp. Every brand has a bike that makes around 50hp that is meant for beginners. The thing you have to be honest with yourself about is what style of bike do you want to ride and how high of a seat/heavy of a bike can your physical frame handle. Take a course where they provide the bikes and learn for yourself what you are most comfortable on
@TWOWHEELD

Just got a2011 Aero. Coming from a CBR250R - lovely comfortable bike. Really nice torquey motor. The brakes are definitely worse than most bikes I’ve owned, but this is par for the cruiser life Much better for two up riding all the same. Love it pieces - looks great too. By far the coolest looking bike I’ve ever owned too. It’s a very confidence inspiring bike - and feels quite nimble for what it is. I probably need to adjust my gear lever and brake pedal to be just right for me.

Very nice! Sounds like you are in love with your new to you motorcycle! Making those small little adjustments are often needed to fit your feet. Maybe the brakes need some adjusting or maintenance to help with the stopping as well? Perhaps it is just different than what you are used to and they are what they are. I just had the thought of maybe they need bled or replaced. Just depends on the miles and use I suppose. Thank you for watching and commenting! Ride safe!

@@TWOWHEELD thanks for the excellent reply. I will check the pads, even update them to something better and refresh the brake fluid. Not sure how to maintain the drum just yet - but I have a Haynes manual ordered so I can understand it. I generally am hands on with maintenance - usually good to understand and be able to have confidence in the bike. I definitely love the Shadow, I watched a lot of videos (including many of yours) before hoping on one. I think it was love at first sight. I got a lot of flak from mates when I got a cruiser , but I really think it’s more my style of riding - I don’t see myself as a track rider at all. Took my driving lessons on a Yamaha MT-07, first own bike was an '85 BMW R80 monolever, second a BMW R850RT (ex-police) and today I looked at an ´06 Honda VT750 2C the European Aero version. Had a try in the saddle, it felt like a very comfy chair ! Friday is test ride day and if that´s to my liking I´ll probably buy it. I´m very curious how the feet forward position will feel. @@TWOWHEELD I enjoyed the video. For a bike that has been around for ages, it seems hard to find good videos on the Shadow line. As for the Rebel, I certainly put some good mileage on it. I had put a set of Pirelli Route MT66 tires on the bike a few years ago, and have worn them down to 4/32, and will be replaced in the Spring. Just did a major maintenance on it including the valve adjustment, carb cleaning/adjustment, and a new clutch on it. Pointless to put new tires on it before it is going to sit for a few months in the garage over the winter. I have never been on an 1100. I do know people in this group have started on 1100 and have been fine, but each persons ability and trainings and all that come into play. The 1100 going forward after you have been riding for a while will provide you with a decent enough power to where you will probably be happier on it longer. My 750 was great to learn on. Very low torque, very forgiving motorcycle, but after riding motorcycles with 1500cc and higher, it does feel weaker in comparison. There is kind of a place and time for each motorcycle. In hindsight, I was a natural when it came to riding motorcycle, and I wish I would have started a bit bigger than my 750 shadow. But I am tall and that makes a difference too. I can’t really give you that answer, but try to see yourself where you want to be in the future. Are you looking for a bike to keep for s long time? Are you looking at upgrading in a year or two? Those are all things to consider. I started on my 750 in May, and by September I had a big Road King in my garage next to the Shadow. Hope that helps some.

I bought one of these yesterday, and took it out for the first long ride today. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER BIKE. I've been driving a motorcycle for 15 years... my first assessment is thats it's big, it's weird, it's pretty, and it's dangerous. Like riding on top of a locomotive. A Road King or Road Glide supersized level bike. Not a beginner bike. I'm keeping it, but only because I'm an experienced rider. Get a classic Honda Rebel 250 as your first bike. Not the new one. The old one, that is very flickable and light weight.

Congrats on the new to you bike! There are many different Honda Shadow models, and they can’t be lumped into the same classification. This Shadow that I have worked perfectly for myself wife and I both to learn to ride on. There are of course a lot of variables that go into to it. Height, strength, and many others. The 250cc bikes at my course class were way too small for me. It made it very difficult to ride them being I am 6’3”. I could stretch out on the Shadow Spirit. My Shadow is about 300 pounds lighter than my Road King, so it’s kind of a middle weight bike. I just thought I would share my personal perspectives. I hope you get lots of riding in on your Shadow! so I sort of mucked up ....wondering if you can help me out if possible? Usually I take pictures of what I take apart or look it up or check out the manual, but there is nothing at all. So here is my situation; I decided to change the spark plugs and the two front replacement, I need to remove the gas tank ok. So, I replace all spark plugs and checked the gap 0.30. But as I took off the tank, the overflow tube (that is attached under the rear of the tank) came off, no big deal right. Well I placed the tank on a milk cart and seen gas coming out of the over flow. So I removed all that tubing (the one that goes into that male connector) and then attached it to the spout so as not to get gas over. Now all is done, spark plugs , gas tank on, but I attached the overflow tubing to the underside of the gas tank to the male connector (tubing is small diameter) and put it thru the clip on the right side of the bike and then pushed it thru to the left side under the front of the seat and ran it thru another lope on the tool box. Now I have this tubing (overflow) where do I run it? Just between the frame to the ground? Any picture sent to me would be appreciated? Sorry to be so long winded.
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 2 года назад
I think you are on track with where you have it. Mine runs down and straight out the bottom. It connects to a little bracket on the crossmember of the frame. There is three tubes that come down there if I’m not mistaken. I will see if I can get a picture sometime. I hope my description explains it enough?

When it comes to cruiser for starter bikes. Weight is more of a factor then the CC. Weight plays a huge part in slow speed maneuvers which newbies dont have experience in. Skill level its harder to do it slow then fast. The exception of this muscle cruisers. They arnt starter bikes. But a 1kcc cruiser is about the equivalent or less then how a a 650cc duel sport like ninja 650 and stuff when it comes to how the bike will behave.
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 2 года назад
Most definitely. Weight plays a large part in the learning part. The way the motorcycle is balanced plays some part in that as well. What’s good for one person, might not be as good for the next, but there are some commonalities that surface. My wife and I learned on the Honda Shadow Spirit. I feel it’s a good bike that isn’t overly heavy to learn on, but will be plenty big enough to not be looking to upgrade in a short time in comparison to a 250cc like they use at most courses. This bike can handle highways all day. Shit back in the early 80's 750's were king of the highways they were considered the big bikes back then and are still capable. I started on a 78 honda xl175, then a 250 rebel then a 650 honda nighthawk and know a 85 honda xl600r all did fine on the highway except the xl175. I believe you skipped many smaller bikes and feel like 750 is not powerful enough for the highway but believe me put a windshield on this bike and your cruising all day on the highway.
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 3 года назад
I don’t disagree with you. Highway speeds of 65-70 are no problem for this motorcycle. I have done it many times. I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking it on the interstate where the speed limit is 80mph. At 65-70, you can hear the rpm’s climbing. There is no tach, so I’m not even for sure where the rpm’s are at. I’m not sure how this shaft drive compares to chain drive either as far as gearing goes. Is it a good all around motorcycle? It sure is, but I get on my Road King if I plan to ride for more than an hour at 65+ mph. The fuel capacity shows it isn’t a motorcycle to take on long distances, although it is very capable, just expect to stop every 100 miles or so, especially being there is no cruise control. There are a ton of these bikes out there, and they do get around all over the countryside. Thanks for watching and leaving your comment.

Does anyone know where or how I could restore the speedometer and odometer on a 2006? Mine are not working, screen is toasted and needle came off.
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 2 года назад
You should be able to purchase a new speedometer. Typically when you do, you have to submit your current miles so it can be programmed to the current mileage for accuracy. I have never done this, but have seen this being done by the places that sell them. Hopefully that helps?

The 600 I believe would be the lightest of the Shadow line. It’s somewhere around 50 pounds lighter than the Spirit.

I think if you wanted to add cruise, it would probably have to be some sort of throttle lock. If someone comes along and wants to correct me there, please do. That’s my experience with these Honda’s anyways. Thanks for watching and asking the question!

Are all the Honda shadow models the same length?
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD Год назад
I am not 100% certain, but I think the frame on the 750s are all the same. The 1100 is different and I am thinking it is different on the 600s as well. As far as the wheelbase length, I would say they are similar, but will vary model to model a little bit. The Honda Shadow Spirit that we have does have a little different rake to the front wheel over some of the other Shadows. It features the big 21” wheel out front and has a 15” on the rear with a 65” wheelbase. Dry weight is just a bit over 500 pounds and wet weight if I remember correctly is around 535 pounds give or take. Seat height is relatively low at 25.7”. These are specifically for a 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit VT750C2 model like we have. Ours has the single 34mm carburetor and is shaft driven. Hopefully that puts a little information out there for ya. 😊

@Ben- Jammin I found these on Amazon about a year and a half or so ago. The brand is Protect the King. They are super comfortable and have excellent ventilation. Not a good glove for keeping hands warm, but excellent to wear when it is hot out. I did a quick search and here is a link for them. Mine have touchscreen capability, but these say they don’t, but look the same. So I’m not sure why that is. www.amazon.com/dp/B0844KJ3YW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_sKwNFb2DBGW20?psc=1

Hi, I'm a 19 year old girl, I'm 5'7. I don't know how to choose a motorcycle. I've been looking at the honda shadow for a while, but I don't know the difference between the different models etc...any advice, if that makes sense? XD
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 2 года назад
Hey there! The Shadow does have a reasonably low seat height to where I would think you would be comfortable. My best advice would be - go to a few different dealers and just sit on bikes. Have them hold it up for you so you can put your feet on the pegs and hands on the grips. Then you will know if you are stretched out too far or not. Then see where your feet land. If you can flat foot it, you will have more confidence than being on a tip toe and tilting the bike to one side. I would suggest both feet touching the ground on the balls of your feet or greater. Especially if you are new to riding. You have also found a good place to learn about motorcycles. RU-vid is full of a lot of information to help guide you. Ultimately, it comes down to sitting on them. I hope that helps? Thank you for watching and commenting! I hope you check out many of the other great informational videos on this channel. 😊

@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 2 года назад
Yes. In comparison the greater portion of other makes and models out there, this motorcycle is relatively light. Are there lighter? Sure are. Not as many are lighter though versus heavy. If a person is sitting on it, and it starts tipping, it is easier to save. Just depends again on leg/arm strength and height. For me, I have never once been close to having this bike on its side. I am tall, so that plays a factor. Thanks for watching and commenting.
