Moving aside from the Z650 restoration project, need to take a look at the ST1100 as the ABS lights started flashing on my way home, manage to find instructions so lets see what the problem is
Below is a list of the possible faults
What the Blinks Fault Codes Mean (1996 and onward).
1 Faulty front modulator crank angle sensor system
2 Faulty rear modulator crank angle sensor system
3 Faulty front modulator control motor system
4 Faulty rear modulator control motor system
5 Faulty front wheel speed sensor system
6 Faulty rear wheel speed sensor system
7 Faulty power circuit
8 Faulty ABS control unit (ECU)

Hi Keith, First of all, I really enjoyed each of your video working on ST1100. I'm a very big fan of these bikes, although my age (38) wouldn't suggest that :-) I spent countless hours working on them and did everything you could possibly do, except for a full engine rebuild. My suggestion regarding a flashing ABS is not too bother unless you're keen on spending nearly £1k on the new ABS modulator and labour, which is the cause in most cases. Once, I was buying a stunning example ST1100 ABS/TSC with from the 1st owner, which happen to be the ex Honda Motorcycle Dealer (lovely and very honest chap) and when I raised my concerns about the faulty ABS system on these models he simply gave me this advice... "If you're relying on ABS on your bike to safe you, you'll be probably dead by the time it will start working fully on the road". You might find these comments appealing but he simply suggested (having replaced few of these modulators under warranty at his dealership back in the day) to use ducktape and cover up the annoying flashing ABS light. Alternatively, remove the bulbs from the sockets on your dash, cover them up with small pieces of ducktape and insert them back on (they don't' heat up so don't worry about any melting). Your ABS will not work but you'll still benefit from having much superior 3 pot callipers combined braking system with a superb stopping power compared to none ABS version. I have owned half of dozen of these and some had the ABS issue. I've learnt not to bother me...unless, as I said earlier, you have a spare £500 to £1000 to spend on new modulators. Keep it up with your videos, I greatly enjoy them. Ride safe!

But the way the voltage reading is too high in your video. It might be your meter or rectifier on your ST. A healthy battery reading with the engine off should be anything between 12.5 - 13V and around 14-14.5V with the engine on and alternator working correctly. That's the reading I got on all my ST's.

Thanks Simon, appreciate your comment and glad you are enjoying the video's. this bike has been a labour of love as it had so much wrong with it, but slowly things are getting down and should be a good tourer when all finished, the flashing ABS is an electrical issue and not ABS related which is a relief, but appreciate your info

Those sought of voltages to the best of my knowledge it is over charging and the reg has failed or is failing i think it should be between 14.5 and 15.5 max hope it helps

A good new battery will only read 12.7v when fullycharged, when alternator is running it should read a max of 14.4 volts. So both your readings are about 2 volts too high. I would suggest that your meter is miss reading probably because its been dropped or it needs a new battery itself. I know this does not solve your bike problem. It is common on most vehicles that once you have solved a problem with the ABS that your most either cancel the fault to eliminate it or take it for a drive for a minimum of time (usually 5 mins), or stop/start it a 5 times to also make the fault code go away.

Thanks Kev, appreciate your comment and advice, my meter is fine, never been dropped, very careful with things like that, had a new battery in the meter before i started, i will be going back in soon to test all the circuits and connectors,

The main thing is your giving it a "go" especially on a bike your not familiar with. I remember doing this and some other items covered in your great videos. The clutch plates i soaked in engine oil for 12 hours instead of dry installing. But each to their own.

Thanks Russell, appreciate your comment,i did put in the description of the video as i forgot to mention in filming that i had pre soaked the plates,

Did you manage to sort out this problem ? Another common failure on these bikes is the alternator.

I think your volt meter is indicating ~1.4 to 2v too high. Nominal lead acid cell voltage is from 2 to 2.1 volts per a cell. There are 6 cells in a 12v battery which means that in the absence of a charger being connected to it or the output of an alternator on a running bike, the max voltage would be 12.6v. That means that with a little rounding, your meter is ~1.5 volts high. That means that when you were reading 16.2volts, with the bike running, the real voltage was likely 14.7V. It could be a little high. It would be interesting to take a voltage reading after the bike has run for about 10 minutes. I would expect it to drop to under 14v. I seem to remember that the float voltage applied to a 12v battery should be about 13.5V. That is about where I would expect a functioning voltage regulator to stabilize at.

Thanks Tim, appreciate your comment, i found the problem in the end after many hours of head scratching and another meter, it was the battery , it failed badly and wasn't that old , fitted a replacement rechecked everything and to this day has been fine, no issues or problems

The 4 pin connector at the 30 amp main power relay is a very common failure point on ST1100's. Pull the connector from the relay and check to see if it is melted. Another point to check are the connectors under the main plastic tank cover just below the steering stem. Pull each of the four connectors and clean and re-assemble - check also these connections for overheated wires and melted connectors - about 80% of St1100 electrical problems can be traced to these connections.

As Bret Snow said 16.23v is too high, it could be the reg/rec or a bad earth connection at a long shot. Hope its an easy fix to solve.

Keith, 16v seems very high, what does it spec it as in the manual? There should be a procedure in the manual to test the reg/ rec resistance too.

Thanks Jonboy, picked up a manual today as didnt have one for the ST, apparently should be 14.8v

Hi, the voltage should 12.6-15v @5000 rpm. Your meter may be reading on the high side if you said you were getting the same results on the other bike. If the battery was dodgy and not fully charged when you were riding the bike the ABS would probably indicate a fault, same thing happens on BMW abs when their battery is low voltage. Try it again with a decent battery and see if the ABS light comes on again when riding.
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder 4 года назад
Thanks, appreciate your comment , the other bike wasn't that high, about 15v, this video was shot at the weekend and today the ST did the same again, ran ok for 2 days, then back to a flashing ABS light , so will go back in to investigate more this weekend

charging way too high keith...if you have changed the rec...I'd be changing the stator now....and when the rec usually goes it can fry the battery too....have had it happen to me in the passed.

Thanks Flying Sumo, my meter is fine, the issue seems to be the reg/rec failing and pumping to much voltage into the battery

Voltage to high.. On just battery.. Should be about 12.5v once started and running should be 14.5volts.. Roughly... 😄 ABS are simple when operating right.. What is not diagnosed is ABS TCS lamp permantly blinking and no codes as it dont work when code retrieval diagnostic procedure used. 😄 Thats my current issue!

Thanks for the info, luckily mine turned out to be a faulty battery, there are a couple of forums for St's on facebook that are really helpful, ABS is a minefield
