Last owner didn’t love this bike that much, is impossible to leave it like that in the nature without put a cover on top if you actually love it!

Previous owner here. You are right, but also, it's not so simple. I did love the bike at one time. Very very much in fact. But, a lot of things changed in my life around the time this bike started sitting. Priorities changed and unfortunately I made a big mistake by not storing it correctly. At the time, my mind was completely occupied with other things. My love never disappeared, but it was forgotten.. Almost like losing touch with an old friend who you were once close with. Anyway, critisism is deserved, but at least I finally did the right thing by moving the bike along to someone who will give it a 2nd life.

@@patmclean1951 I put around 15k miles on it for the first 4 years I had it, then it mostly sat after that. It was amazing. More recently I've done most of my riding on a dual sport, a Suzuki DR650 completely adventure built with a touch of performance mods. Much better suited for the kind of riding I like to do.

I own a 2001 with 64,000 on now. I do all my own maintenance . 520 conversion chain and 2 up rear sprocket makes big difference. I keep it clean and changed bearings , tapered steering bearings. ABM straight bars. The more I ride my bike the more it grows on me. I'm 65 ride often. Good Luck.

If you're looking for a decent paint gun, Harbor Freight sells a brand called Spectrum. I paint cars and bikes as a hobby. This is the gun i use and it's fantastic. Painting isn't just about applying the paint though. Prep work and finishing work is far more important. Getting plenty of paint coverage is all you need. Then wet sanding and polishing to make it look perfect. Good luck dude!!!

The old Interceptors are gold if you can find a complete one in workable condition. I have a nicely restored 1984 VF700F Interceptor in Freddie Spencer red, white and blue with corbin custom seat and period correct Yoshimura exhaust I had the same bike, 1984 in 750cc in the late 80's early 90's while in the Marine Corps. Stupidly sold it when I detached from active duty. Fast forward to 2019, found the 84' VF700 and told the wife, if it runs I'm buying it. Still a screamer and gets the looks wherever I go. The old girl sits proudly next to my 2013 Honda VFR1200F. Both are amazing machines. Can't wait to see this one come alive! Ride smart my 2 wheeled brethren!

I'm so excited for this bike revival, especially because I got my first bike five years after that one came out, so it was never in my radar. Now that it's been two years since I got bitten hardcore by the Aprilia V4/Yamaha CP4 engine note, I can appreciate this bike like I never did before.😁 Also, I don't care about the TBR exhaust hate echo chamber of the Internet. I've had that C2 in aluminum on an '01 Triumph TT600. It came with it, and I loved it. Very deep down low, and it screamed up top in a pleasant way. I also had it on an '06 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R in carbon and it sounded so throaty and beautiful, and never gave me issues.

I take great care of my bikes. Motorcycles are easy to replace cosmetic parts as Mother Nature takes a toll. Chrome rusts first after awhile just replace. Same with plastic items. A little high heat black paint on the visible engine parts keeps the bike looking great. Every year treat with ACF 50 corrosion inhibitor. Replacing some items every few years vs waiting makes the list too long and expensive

Nice! I have revamped many old cars and bikes. One thing I do not do... painting. And I am not alone. If you want a first class paint job, like Honda's original one, have it done by a pro and pay the price. This is one of the reasons I tend to avoid bikes that need a paint job. Just revamped a 4th gen, it looked quite bad, needed a lot of work. Yet the paint (the not so usual dark metalic blue) came out fine after a good polish and wax...

I recently bought an 06 vfr800 with a salvage title. I want to do a naked conversion and go with a street fighter type look. I have ridden busas, liter bikes, and owned several 600s. I didn’t expect to be blown away by the power on the vfr but i was pleasantly surprised how much low down tq it makes and the sound is incredible. Overall I am shocked the vfr isn’t a more popular platform, once you get past the weight they are amazing bikes for someone who doesn’t feel the need to have the fastest bike in the area.

YESSSS! I own a 5th gen ('99) and LOVE it! Some prefer the VTEC, but I think the 5th sounds better with its gear driven cams, and looks better. Hopefully we can get some how-to's out of this bike, since all VFR tutorials are for 6th gens. The biggest fail point on these bikes, on 6th gens too but especially on these bikes, is the charging system. VFRworld has a good thread on diagnosing the charging system. I've replaced my entire system, my stator replaced with a cheap Caltric one, and my R/R replaced with one from Roadster Cycle. Can't recommend Roadster Cycle enough if you need a new R/R. When my charging system wasn't working, it would run hot, but once I got it all working the higher voltage resulted in the fan moving more air.

The air filter looks like a K&N but I wouldn't bother trying to clean it. Good luck with the rebuild, I will be keeping an eye on how you are progressing. I am on my second VFR 5th Gen after binning my 98 FiW (red) a year ago, I bought an 01 Fi1(blue), I don't have the gear change, clutch and forks problems I had with red and the economy is much better, probably due to the closed loop induction.

buy two paint guns: - devil blis FGL with 1.4 nozzle for base and clear - any generic 1.6-2.0 nozzle crap for for primers as you will wet sand them It works for me as a noob DIY, with FGL you can really make a good looking finish You also will ned a compressor around 150L and Regulator and something to remove oils and humidity form air in the lines

Great vid as always, nice to see you get to work. looking forward to the result! Okay so my suspicion was correct. The previous owner installed a K&N airfilter and did not remove the OEM rubber gasket in the airbox cover (top and bottom) Please remove them when rebuilding the bike! otherwise, that gap will remain and if you overtighten the airbox bolts it will break off. (also little sidenote for the snorkel, its not just noise regulations, it also prevents the air filter from getting drenched in a downpour, would recommend leaving it in)

Wild that we both started an adventure on a 5th Gen around the same time. I purchased my 1998 on Halloween. It had a lot of money/time spent on it at some point in the past (Power commander, Two brothers exhaust thats even older than yours, sprockets, and an "interesting" pink over black Valentino Rossi livery from 2003). Happy I found your series. I've got new plastics in the garage ready for spring.

If you know what you're doing, rattle cans can do a really good job. I remember hearing that Harbor Freight got a cheap and good HVLP spray gun. Your air compressor just need to be big enough so you don't have to start/stop because of low pressure. The dash turning off could easily just be a loose wire. Overheating could be from bad/old oil or just low/bad cooling fluid.

I would not have used cleaning products on anything to be painted, as it may cause fisheyes. For a starter gun, I have had good luck using $20ish HF paint guns. They have a built in adjustable regulator and will usually spray just fine. At that price it may be cheaper to throw it out after use than to clean it. Laquer thinner ain't cheap and niether are better guns that you WILL want to thoroughly clean! I like the purple HVLP variety.

the reason there is a gap in the airbox halves is because they put in an aftermarket filter but did not remove the upper O-ring in the lip of the top cover to account for the taller flange on the aftermarket air filter. And losing all the cover bolts is unacceptable.

Nice VFR model, the last of the pre-VTEC's, one of the potentially most tunable versions, if you want to turn the motor into a 'sleeper' RVF, if you can find a 45 kit tune/approximation; as the factory RC-45's used the same non-VTEC 800 head castings, likely with pretty much the same port dimensions as yours, just little more polished and smoother fowing - if, the stock CNC-ed surfaces & ports directional angles aren't suitable enough already.
@Flatule
@Flatule 10 месяцев назад
Yep, the rc45 had a 360 degree crank (180 for the vfr800) titanium con rod (lighter means higher revs means more power) and different cam shaft. The 800 is basically a stroked and lazier rc45. The 800 also suffer from compression ratio (cant mess with that due to gear driver cam) amd pre-ignition timing (Rapid Bike Racing can help with that).
@razor1uk610
@razor1uk610 9 месяцев назад
@@Flatule ..so the RC46/800 is a 'screamer' style to the higher strung 'big bang' RC45 ?? Compression ratio has a little adjustment in differing piston shapes/heights, but that's likely in very minor & a small percentage of reduced.

I agree! I know full restorations are pricey and time-consuming, but I dislike these videos where the person doesn't even wash the bike initially and just wastes time (and money) using those spray cleaners and a dirty rag to wipe off the dirt and exclaim how nice it looks for what it is. It's lazy to me. If that was my bike, regardless of paying just $700, it's kind of special. I'd strip the thing to the frame just to make sure nothing will surprise me in the future. It if has been sitting so long, it was mistreated. The worst should be expected. If he thinks he's just gonna replace fuel, spark plugs, battery and air filter and ride to the sunset, he's in for a rude awakening. The 954 should've been a lesson on what to expect with mystery bikes.
@rhemyis

The poetry with the owner felling bad about selling the bike and the actual state of the bike is a little bit overrated. If he actually cared about this bike, it wasn't in a such bad shape. I've seen vfr's like this with 100.000km looking great so the high mileage does not justify such a neglected bike.
